Nos enfocaremos en los estudios de la formación y el uso de las palabras (morfología), y la formación y la estructura de las oraciones (sintaxis), en los cuales se incluyen los temas sobre los componentes de una oración y sus funciones (e.g., sustantivos, pronombres, modificadores, etc.), las estructuras internas de las palabras, los tipos de oraciones, y las palabras compuestas. Se supone que los participantes en el cuso posean un conocimiento básico/gramatical aportado por los cuatro años previos del estudio de la lengua española. Este seminario se basará en el diálogo entre participantes del curso basado en las lecturas asignadas. Por esta razón, la asistencia a clase es imprescindible. Los alumnos han de venir a clase preparados con su tarea hecha, dispuestos a participar activamente en español. Sus participaciones deben reflejar que han leído la lectura y han cumplido la tarea. Su profesora podrá recoger tareas al azar para evaluar su preparación. La clase comienza a la hora exacta; si usted llega tarde, se le rebajará su nota de participación. Presentación oral de un artículo. Cada uno de los estudiantes hará una presentación oral sobre un artículo del paquete que se le va a asignar. La presentación debe durar entre minutos y debe incluir un resumen del contenido (en español) y algunas preguntas para estimular la discusión entre todos los participantes. Además, se distribuirá un volante para la 1

2 lectura que se presente. La evaluación de la presentación se basará en tanto su presentación oral como su volante preparado. Examen parcial. Habrá un examen parcial que cubrirá todos los tópicos anteriores. Los alumnos van a recibir más información (formato) del examen con unas semanas de anticipación. Pruebitas. Habrá varias pruebitas sobre los materiales que se han estudiado anteriormente. Se dan las pruebitas al principio de clase, que durarán más o menos minutos. Si usted llega tarde, no podrá tomar la pruebita. Trabajo final escrito. Hay que escribir un informe de investigación de 10 a 12 páginas (al máximo) a doble espacio sobre una comparación crítica de dos análisis lingüísticos de un fenómeno lingüístico relacionado con el español. El fenómeno que ha escogido debe enfocarse en uno de los subsistemas que se han estudiado: la morfología o la sintaxis. La crítica consistirá en i) la comparación (i.e., las similitudes y las diferencias) entre dos análisis, y ii) una reacción crítica de los que Ud. ha aprendido en su investigación personal. Este trabajo final le ofrecerá una oportunidad para que usted explore fuera de clase algún tema del curso que le interese más. Presentación del trabajo final. Cada uno de los estudiantes hará una presentación oral sobre el trabajo final que ha investigado. La presentación debe ser concisa y clara, que dura entre 8-10 minutos. Se distribuirá un volante para la lectura que se presente. Incompleto / Make-up. No habrá make-up de ninguna de las tareas/presentaciones ni los exámenes/pruebas/proyectos en esta clase. No se puede recuperar ninguna prueba/tarea sin un acuerdo hecho antes de la fecha de entrega a menos que haya documentación oficial que le presenten a la profesora en la siguiente clase (dentro de una semana de su ausencia). No se le dará un incompleto. Attendance: This is an intensive graduate seminar in which your active participation and preparation is expected. Regular and punctual class attendance is required of all students. You are allowed ONE free absence (which is three hours of missing class), regardless of the reasons. You are encouraged to save this for unavoidable circumstances. At the end of the semester, 6% will be subtracted from your final grade for every absence above one. More than 3 absences (= more than three weeks of class; 1/5 of the semester) will result in an F (fail) of your final course grade. You must present any official documentation (e.g., doctor s note) by the following class period after your absence for your absence to be considered excused. Note that late arrivals will greatly affect your participation grade. Arriving after the class start time will be considered tardy [3 late arrivals will be converted into one absence]; arriving 15 mins. after class start time will be considered a half absence; arriving 30 mins. after class start time will be considered a full absence). Leaving class early without the instructor s approval will not be allowed; if that happens, the same policy of tardy/absence (and the deduction of participation grade) will be applied. It is expected that students take only reasonable time (less than 5 minutes) when having to go to a restroom during class. Missing class time more than 5 minutes will result in the deduction of points just like for tardiness and/or absence (i.e. 3 late arrivals equal to one absence; 15 mins. missing class time equals to a half absence; 30 mins. missing class time equal to a full absence, etc.). Absences due to the observance of a religious holiday require that you notify me IN WRITING during the first 15 days of the semester. 2

3 Integridad académica (Statement on Academic Integrity): The University of North Texas Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct ( defines academic misconduct as any acts of dishonesty, conduct which adversely affects the university community, and misconduct relating to official obligations between the student and the university or its officials. The Acts of Dishonesty include but not limited to cheating [use of unauthorized materials, assistance, etc. during exams, dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, acquisition of tests, notes belonging to a faculty, dual submission of a paper or resubmission of a paper to a different class, etc.], plagiarism [to present ideas and statements of another person-e.g. the negligent use by paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full acknowledgement], and facilitating academic misconduct [to help another student do any of the above; being present while the offense is committed, etc.]. With this in mind consider the following: all assignments for this course should be your own work only. You cannot have another student, a tutor or friend correct the work you are to turn in. You may not use electronic translation programs to do any of the work for this course. Any attempt to hand in work not done by yourself will receive a zero (0).The only exception to the above is if, and only if, your instructor assigns you to work with another student. Cheating, plagiarism, and other examples of academic misconduct as outlined in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities will be pursued and sanctions will be levied. If you have any questions about the issue of academic integrity, consult the instructor and/or visit Cell phone/internet use. The cell phones and other electronic/telecommunication devices should be turned off and put away completely during class. Texting/ ing/using internet is not allowed during class. Labtop use in the classroom. Students are not allowed to use laptops to surf the web or communicate with people during the class time. Laptops can be used only for the purpose of taking class notes if necessary. The inappropriate use of a laptop will not be tolerated, and consequently, it will negatively affect students participation grade. If it continues after the first warning, sanctions will be levied. Student Behavior in the Classroom: Student behavior that interferes with an instructor s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. The university's expectations for student conduct apply to all instructional forums, including university and electronic classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The Code of Student Conduct can be found at Disability accommodation. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures cooperates with the Office of Disability Accommodation to make reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities, as required by the American with Disabilities Act and Section 504, Rehabilitation Act.
