1 ANÁLISIS DEL IMPACTO EN LOS MERCADOS DE TRANSPORTE DE LA APARICIÓN DE UN OPERADOR AÉREO DE BAJO COSTE Y RAZONES DE ELECCIÓN DE LOS MERCADOS Autor: Serrano Marugán, José María. RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO El proyecto desarrollado consiste en analizar cómo la aparición de operadores aéreos de bajo coste influye en un mercado ya operado por otras compañías tradicionales y cuáles son los criterios de estos operadores a la hora de elegir un mercado u otro. Los principales objetivos del proyecto los podemos separar en dos. Por un lado analizar el precio del billete (por kilómetro) en distintos escenarios de mercado: desde una ruta operada por una única compañía de red, hasta el caso de máxima competencia, en el que operan varias compañías con estructuras convencionales y a su vez varias alternativas de bajo coste. Por otro, analizar cuáles son las condiciones que se tienen que dar para que una compañía de bajo coste decida comenzar a operar en una determinada ruta. No sólo es función de la distancia sino de aspectos como el número de saltos a lo largo del día y del tráfico potencial que podría tener la ruta. En España, pese a que el número de compañías que operan es enorme, destacan cinco de bajo coste, tanto por su gran número de puntos de la península en los que operan como por su frecuencia de vuelos. Estas compañías son: Clickair, Vueling, Easyjet, Air Berlin y Ryanair. Desde la entrada en el mercado español de Ryanair en el año 1991, se han constituido más compañías progresivamente con un aumento en su facturación anual considerable, teniendo en cuenta que el tráfico aéreo en los últimos años ha experimentado un crecimiento anual cercano al 8%. El aumento de negocio de las compañías de bajo coste en el año 2006 experimentó una subida del 15% con respecto al año anterior, lo que supone que el 31,5% de los pasajeros que aterrizan en nuestro país es mediante una de estas compañías.

2 El número de aeropuertos distribuidos por casi las provincias españolas facilita esta expansión ya que los operadores pueden decidir en qué rutas saldría rentable operar. Es importante comentar que a pesar que España cuenta con 48 aeropuertos la mayoría del tráfico se concentra en un número reducido de ellos: entre 14 aeropuertos se alcanza el 88,14% del tráfico de pasajeros. Se realizará en el proyecto un análisis de rutas potenciales, para comparar el estado actual en cuanto a líneas aéreas de bajo coste, con el que podría haber en unos años. Para ello se ha elaborado una matriz que relaciona la población de las ciudades a unir con la distancia que las separa. Un factor muy importante a la hora de establecer el precio del billete es la estructura del mercado, caracterizado por el número y el tipo de compañías que operan en ese itinerario. Así, se comprobará que cuando la cobertura es única mediante una compañía de red el precio de los billetes por kilómetro es muy elevado, llegándose incluso a multiplicar por 6 en comparación con un escenario en el que compañías tradicionales y LCC operan la misma ruta. Un listado de compañías tanto las que operan entre nuestro territorio y el extranjero como de compañías que operan dentro de nuestras fronteras, nos hace ver que el porcentaje de LCC frente a tradicionales se sitúa en 28,1% en el primer caso y en 18,18% en el segundo. Así también se han estudiado el número de vuelos de bajo coste y el total entre un origen y un destino, comprobando que de momento no intentan abarcar todo el mercado, sino que sólo operan en determinadas rutas que son adecuadas a sus características operativas, conformándose con un porcentaje, que en algunos casos como el aeropuerto de Málaga puede ser cercano al 40%. Parece que estas compañías se establecen bajo un modelo empresarial típico, para poder ofrecer unos precios tan competitivos. De este modo, frente a la idea generalizada de que son más baratas porque no dan de comer y tienen menos personal a bordo, las razones son mucho más complejas y que estos factores no son ni mucho menos los únicos a la hora de la reducción de los costes operativos. A la hora de establecer un precio medio, como es complicado la referencia de un precio único pues nos encontramos en un mercado con fuertes variaciones en función de los días de anticipación con los que se compra el billete, se abordó el tema con un estudio durante aproximadamente 40 días en dos rutas diferentes en distintos días de la semana,

3 para ver el comportamiento del precio y poder comparar con otras rutas y modos de transporte. Para ello se elaboraron tablas con precio, coste y duración del trayecto en coche, autobús y tren, llegando a la conclusión que el avión para distancias superiores a 600 kilómetros no presenta apenas competencia.

SUMMARY The developed project consists of analyzing how the appearance of Low Cost Carrier influences on a market already operated on other traditional companies and which are the criteria of these operators at the moment of choosing a market or other one. The principal aims of the project we can separate in two. On the one hand to analyze the price of the bill (for kilometre) in different scenes of market: from a route operated on one important company, up to the case of maximum competition, in which they operate on several companies with conventional structures and in turn several alternatives of low cost. For other one, analyze which are the conditions that have to be given in order that a company of low cost decides to begin to operate in a certain route. Not only it is a function of the distance, because there are aspects as the number of "jumps" throughout the day and of the potential traffic that might have the route. In Spain, in spite of that the number of companies that operate is enormous, stand out five of low cost, so much for their great number of points of the country in those who operate like their frequency of flights. These companies are: Clickair, Vueling, Easyjet, Air Berlin y Ryanair. From the entry of Ryanair in Spanish market in the year 1991, more companies have been constituted progressively by an increase in thir annual considerable invoicing, bearing in mind that the air traffic in the last years has experienced an annual growth near to 8 %. The increase of business of the companies of low cost in the year 2006 experienced a raise of 15 % with regard to the previous year, and it supposes that 31,5 % of the passengers who land in our country is by means of one of these companies.

5 The number of airports distributed by almost the Spanish provinces facilitates this expansion since the operators can decide about what routes they would work out profitable to operate. It is important to comment that despite of the fact that Spain possesses 48 airports the majority of the traffic centers in a limited number of them: 14 airports reach 88,14 % of the passenger s traffic. There will be realized in the project an analysis of potential routes, to compare the current condition state as for air lines of low cost, with the one that might exist in a few years. For it there has been elaborated a counterfoil that the population of the cities relates to joining with the distance that separates them. A very important factor at the moment of establishing the price of the bill is the structure of the market, characterized by the number and the type of companies that operate in this itinerary. This way, there will be verified that when the coverage is only by means of an important company the price of the bills for kilometre is very high, managing to multiply even for 6 in comparison with a stage in which traditional companies and LCC operate on the same route. A list of companies so much those who operate among our territory and the foreigner as of companies that operate inside our borders, makes us see that the percentage of LCC opposite to traditional places in 28,1 % in the first case and in 18,18 % in the second one. This way also there have been studied the number of flights of low cost and the whole among an origin and a destiny, verifying that at the moment they do not try to include the whole market, but only they operate in certain routes that are adapted to their operative characteristics, conforming to a percentage, which in some cases like the airport of Malaga can be near to 40 %. It seems that these companies are established under a managerial typical model, to be able to offer a few so competitive prices. Thus, opposite to the widespread idea of that are cheaper because " they do not give of eating and they have less personal on board ", the reasons are much more complex and that these factors are not the only ones at the moment of the reduction of the operative costs. At the moment of establishing an average price, there is complicated the reference of the only price because we have different variations depending on the days of anticipation to buy the bill, the topic was approached by a study for approximately 40 days in two different routes in the different days of the week, to see the behavior of the

6 price and to be able to compare with other routes and manners of transport. For this reason, we make tables with the price, cost and journey time in car, bus and train, coming to the conclusion that the plane for distances superior to 600 kilometres does not present scarcely competition.
