I know many parents have been working directly with kids in the classroom, helping out in the workrooms, and supporting important events such as the book fair, ECO, all the field trips and picture day, among others. Thanks for all you do, you really do make a difference! Parent-teacher conferences are coming up fast! Conferences will be held in the evenings between Monday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 17. Please look for a note in your Friday folder indicating the scheduled meeting time. These conferences are very important to us and are a great opportunity to discuss your child s academic and social-emotional progress and needs. Please also remember that school will be closed on Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19. As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions. I value your feedback and look forward to working with you to make this a positive and productive school year for your child. The mosaic will be created by Art Club participants. Those 4 th and 5 th graders who are interested in joining Art Club will get the chance to sign-up once we get approval from the school district for the mosaic. If there are any parent volunteers out there who have experience with mosaic work, I d love to have some help! You can contact me at dianaf@psdschools.org. Stay tuned for the Original Works Art Fundraiser Dear Family, Olander s art program is once again hosting the Original Works art fundraiser. On October 12 th, your children will be bringing home a green plastic bag which will include an order form and the works of art they have been creating for this fundraiser. These works of art can be printed onto various items such as t-shirts, mugs, pillowcases, etc. There is no limit on the number of items you purchase, and participation is voluntary. If you choose to not purchase any items, then you simply keep the work of art! Orders will be due on Friday, October 26 th. Original Works has scheduled to have the ordered items shipped back to Olander in time for the winter holidays. 3 Page 3 Olander Elementary School Newsletter September, 2012 Music Notes by Miss Nonies Aloha! What a great start to this new school year! For those of you who don t know me, my name is Ms. Nonies and I am the music teacher here at Olander. I was born and raised on the islands of Hawai i. I graduated from UNC (2009) where I studied music education and percussion performance. Music is a love and passion of mine and I am so excited to share that with the students. 4 th and 5 th Olander Osprey Choir- WOW, What a great turn out this year! We have 74 students signed-up for choir, AMAZING! Choir meets every Wednesday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. in the music room. See you there. Please visit the Olander Music Web Page. You will find a curriculum for every grade level and what we will be studying this year. There are cool links to music websites such as history facts, music memory composers, games, composing, instrument facts, note reading, and awesome videos too! We are working to get a video of the performances for this year. Mahalo, Ms. Nonies lnonies@psdschools.org Music Web Page: PBL Update Mission Statement: Olander School for Project-Based Learning fosters a community where students are encouraged to ask questions and solve problems through positive support. Community Hall Meetings allow a common experience for students and staff to share and listen to the questions that people are solving, recognize students who are achieving in various ways, and to have fun together as we develop shared connections. For each meeting, a grade level showcases a project and the habits of mind often employed while students work to solve problems during their PBL.

4 Page 4 Olander Elementary School Newsletter September, 2012 Student Leadership Council News Student Leadership begins Monday, October 1 with students 3 rd grade through 5 th participating. These enthusiastic leaders students will act as school ambassadors by welcoming and touring visitors, conduct spirit days and participate in evening events hosted by the school. Counseling Corner Welcome back to school, families and friends! Summer seems like a blur now that we are back in classes and focusing on social skills during counseling lessons. This month, in all grade levels, we have been using various activities to cover the important skills of being active listeners as well as how to have a conversation with others. We have played games that require good listening skills as well as direction following skills. In the primary grades, during School Safety Week, we shared tips for keeping ourselves safe at school and at home, and we learned that knowing how to say no to a bad idea also keeps us safe. Grades 1-3 role played and practiced the Refusal Skill listed below; we will cover this skill later in grades 4-5. As you know, Olander staff members place an emphasis on teaching and reinforcing strong social skills, as we believe that these skills helps students be successful learners not only in school, but in life. I will often post the skills we cover in these counseling newsletters, and teachers may share the skills as well. Students internalize the skills best when they see the connections between their use at home and school, so practice through role plays and reinforcement on these skills at home helps students to really solidify the skills. If you d like posters of these skills to post on your refrigerator to focus on them for a week at a time, just let me know. I m glad to share. J Have fun practicing! ( We could get hurt. We could get in trouble. We could hurt her. ) 4. Suggest an alternative. ( Why don t we go play football instead? ) 5. Move it, sell it, keep the door open. ( I am not going to take that. I ll be out front if you want to join me. ) ECO Was Wonderful! Thank you also to parents for your terrific students, ready to be challenged.

6 Page 6 Olander Elementary School Newsletter September, 2012 Wednesday, October 3, is International Walk to School Day Many of your schools PE classes have already received training in Safe Routes to School, and some of you will be contacted within the next few days about receiving this special in-school training offered by our program. Please let me know if you have any questions or requests regarding this training or other aspects of the local Safe Routes to School program. PTO Update Leading ~ Growing ~ Volunteering The Olander Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is very excited for this upcoming year! We have a lot of great activities and events planned, and look forward to connecting with all of the parents, families, and teachers this year. For those of you that may be new to Olander or the public school system, you might be wondering what PTO is all about! Olander PTO is made up of volunteer parents who work in conjunction with teachers, staff, and other parents to support educational goals and provide opportunities to connect as a school community. We organize and implement fundraising activities, and assist in sponsoring school events throughout the year. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm in the Media Center. Everyone is encouraged to attend to learn more about all of the great things we ll be working on this year! Our first fundraising event of the year finished with great success! Thanks so much to Stacy Fridal for organizing the Entertainment books, and to all of our parents and families who helped our students earn money for our school. Although the final numbers are still being calculated, we know that $15 of every book that was sold will be returned to our school! We also have our yearly, ongoing fundraisers, including Morning Fresh Dairy milk caps, Box Tops for Education, and of course our Build Our Nest program. Build Our Nest is an ongoing fundraiser for those who would like to donate a select sum Continued on pg. 7

Donations are accepted at any time online at Our next event that will be coming up later this month is the annual Book Fair, which will occur from Monday, September 24 th through Friday, September 28 th. At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. You will also have the opportunity to help contribute books to your child's classroom library. The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading! Along with the Book Fair, we ll also be hosting a Family Night on Wednesday, September 26 th from 6:00-8:00pm. Bring the whole family for food, fun, Bingo and books! As always, we would love to encourage parents to volunteer part of their time to the Book Fair and/or Family Night. If you re interested in helping out with this fun event, please contact Shannon Hill at hills@acm.org. Finally, we d like to give everyone an update on our Olander PTO officers. Brenda Roach and Stacy Fridal have both been nominated as co- Presidents for the year, and will be lending their expertise and experience to our organization. We re very excited to have them both continue with us for another year! Our newest officer is Amy Robertson, who will be our new PTO Secretary. She will also assist us with marketing and technology, and broaden our efforts with technology-based communication. 11 Page 11 Olander Elementary School Newsletter September, 2012 October 2012 School News Briefs, continued The Board of Education Executive Limitation policy 2.1 stresses the importance for PSD to: obtain public input in decision-making; collecting appropriate information; safely store student information; assure discipline is appropriate and consistent; provide safe and accessible school facilities; provide equitable and reasonable access for nondisruptive activities; provide families with educational choices; clearly communicate student expectations; adhere to consistent and timely grading practices; be responsive to inquiries; never retaliate against students or parents; use written rules that state school expectations, standards and procedures; follow internal grievance procedures and access the Board of Education if the policy is violated; and provide families with many ways to voice their concerns about the education of students. 6. Volunteers, businesses and community partners wanted in the classrooms If you have a few hours to share your skills and expertise, you could make a huge difference in the lives of students.
