Present simple: negative form Para formar el presente simple en negativa de cualquier verbo en inglés que no sea auxiliar, se utiliza la partícula d o ( o does en tercera persona del singular) seguida de la partícula negativa not más el infinitivo del verbo sin to. La estructura fija a seguir sería: SUJETO + DO / DOES + NOT + VERBO Debemos prestar atención al hecho de que vamos a jugar siempre con las partículas do / does y not, permaneciendo el verbo principal siempre igual. Si en afirmativa le añadíamos una -s a la tercera persona del singular, en negativa usamos does en lugar de do, de manera que ya no se añade la -s al verbo. Tomemos el verbo to eat como ejemplo: I do not eat You do not eat no comen yo no como He does not eat él no come She does not eat ella no come It does not eat (animal o cosa) We do not eat tú no comes, Ud. no come, vosotros no coméis, Uds. ello no come nosotros no comemos They do not eat ellos / ellas no comen Al igual que los verbos que hemos visto hasta ahora, esta forma verbal también se puede contraer; de hecho la forma contraída es mucho más usual en lenguaje oral. 8 Presente simple interrogativo Igual que para el verbo to be invertíamos el orden de sujeto más verbo por verbo más sujeto, con el presente simple ocurre lo mismo, pero utilizando la partícula do / does. El verbo principal queda, de este modo, inamovible. La estructura fija a seguir sería: Veámoslo mejor con un ejemplo: Do I eat? Do you eat? Does he eat? como yo? DO / DOES + SUJETO + VERBO? comes tú, come ud., coméis vosotros, comen uds.? come él? Does she eat? come ella? Does it eat? Do we eat? Do they eat? come ello (animal o cosa)? comemos nosotros? comen ellos / ellas? Con el presente simple, la forma corta (más usual a la hora de responder) se construye con el sujeto que corresponda más el auxiliar, bien en negativa o afirmativa, según convenga. Así pues, si preguntamos: Do you like cats? Se podría contestar que sí o que no: Yes, I do. No, I don t. Con la tercera persona del singular sería igual: Does she speak English? Yes, she does. No, she doesn t. En inglés también podemos usar el auxiliar do, does en frases afirmativas, pero en estos casos lo que se pretende es dar más énfasis a la acción. Cuando utilizamos el auxiliar en afirmativa el orden no varía y en el caso de las terceras personas del singular ya no hace falta añadir la terminación -s, ya que viene dado por el uso de does en lugar de do. P. ej.: I do like football. Me gusta (realmente) el fútbol.
