12 Monrovia Schools Foundation Summer Enrichment Programs 2015 Elementary School Program The Monrovia Schools Foundation is proud to offer summer enrichment programs that would allow elementary school students the chance to participate in classes that will stimulate their minds and exercise their bodies. Each course costs $ and includes all necessary supplies and materials. June 11th through July 9th 8:00 12:00 Monday Friday Plymouth Elementary Breakfast and lunch are provided at no additional cost to the student Kinder Camp TK - K Students who will be enroll in Transitional kindergarten and kindergarten in 2015 will be exposed to a Kindergarten classroom setting. Through the use of arts and crafts, stories, music, games and movement, students will be able practice simple rules and procedures such as lining up, sitting on the rug and listening to directions. They will develop their fine motor skills by cutting, gluing, coloring and painting. Lastly they will be exposed to shapes and colors, numbers 0 to 10 and writing their name. All useful skills in Kindergarten! Sensational Spanish! Grade 2-5 Sensational Spanish! Come one, come all. If you want to learn some basic Spanish words or simply continue speaking Spanish this summer, this is the course to take. Students in this class will expand their conversational Spanish through multicultural literature, music, arts and crafts and role play. Grades 2-5 will focus on oral vocabulary in a fun and engaging way. Students in older grades will read Spanish books and apply the different reading strategies as well as explore the three writing genres. Literature Circles - Summer Book Club- Grade 4-5 During Literature Circles,4th and 5th grade students will be reading great classic novels. As they read, they will also partake in amazing conversations in order to analyze the characters, plot, and genre. In addition, they will build up their vocabulary and increase their reading comprehension skills. The summer is the best time to enjoy READING and enjoy thought provoking conversations with our peers! Keyboard Grade 3-5 By using fun and creative activities, students will be taught the basic introductory skills needed to play the keyboard/piano finger coordination, rhythm, and note reading Mandarin Grade 2-5 Chinese Bridge class is an elite four-week intensive Mandarin language and Chinese culture training program for elementary students. The camp is organized by MSF that promotes the teaching of Chinese language and culture worldwide. During the four-week program students will have the opportunity to begin developing their language skills by attending these classes. Spanish Dual Language K-3 The class will be taught in Spanish with little English spoken. Students will interact with the teacher and other students in conversational Spanish. The class will focus on sentence structure and vocabulary development through fun hands-on activities, songs, and movement games. Art Grades 1-5 This is an introductory class that focuses first on visual awareness, teaching students to see artwork. The class concentrates on color theory. Students develop skills based on the elements of art and principles of design using appropriate media for the concepts. Stem Learning - Grades 3-5 This exciting hands-on approach to 21st century learning uses small plastic bricks to explore construction engineering, physics, communications, and math. Students will investigate, design, and build a variety of models, including robotics, using their imagination, critical thinking skills, and STEM concepts. The adventure continues with a field trip and lessons in art for a truly unique student experience. June 11th through July 9th 8 12:00 Monday Friday Clifton School Breakfast and lunch are provided at no additional cost to the student STEM Learning (Science Technology Engineering Math) Grade Level: 6th and 8th The class will cover some of the aspect of science and engineering: robotics, chemistry, the environment, zoo animals, architecture, space science, and the science behind food, to name just a few. During the week, students will work on hands-on laboratory experiments. June 11th through July 15th 7:30 12:45 Monday Friday Monrovia High School Breakfast and lunch are provided at no additional cost to the student World History Through Art Class 9th 10th 10 unit course: Elective credits awarded I would like to teach a World History class through video and utilizing books as support for the students who need either elective credits or core class credits. This class would target the special ed. students who need a little assistance in gaining needed credits, and give them an alternative to mathematics or English. Life Fitness- Grades 9th-10th 10 unit course: Elective credits awarded Physical Education will provide an individualized, developmentally appropriate and a personally challenging, instructional program. The goal is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, confidence, skills, and motivation needed to enjoy and engage in a lifelong, healthy, active life-style. Video Game Design Grades -9th -12th 10 unit course: Elective credits awarded This class will provide students with an introduction to online computer game design. Students will learn how to write computer code for creating games as well as logic, physics, and psychology necessary for game play. Chemistry Grade 9th -12th -10 unit credit course: Meets CSU/UC A-G Requirements In Chemistry, students will larn about Matter and change, atomic and molecular structures of substances, chemical bonds, conservation of matter and stoichiometry, gas properties, acids and bases, solutions, thermodynamics, nuclear processes, chemical equilibrium, and reaction rates.
