4 Pastor s Letter February 1/2 Dear Parish Family, Paying it Forward I have my work cut out for me this week! I invited our Confirmation candidates to write Bishop Perez and me a letter stating their reasons for wanting to be confirmed. I now have about 50 mostly handwritten notes which were presented with great ceremony last Sunday night at our Confirmation enrollment Mass. Judging from the notes and the group of almost 350 parents, sponsors, and family that attended the Mass, the Holy Spirit is alive and well in Sacred Hearts. After Mass, everyone was treated to a pasta dinner held in our Parish Hall. Mrs. Jen Ferrantino, our religious education director, and members of our youth ministry served an overflow crowd. I must admit that when I came into the hall I felt like the disciples of Jesus when he told them to feed the five thousand with two loaves and fish. But just like in the Gospels no problem. Our families heard of the plan and volunteered to help prepare the meal. Everyone ate their fill and there was more than enough to go around. I am so impressed with the spirit of service in our community. So many members of our youth ministry turned out to serve the meal. I don t think there is anything more core to the Gospel than praying and breaking bread together. Our new youth group and Confirmation candidates are full of enthusiasm for being of service. They are ministering at Mass as lectors, ushers, and greeters. They are helping with community projects like Maureen s Haven and Human Resources. They are volunteering to join our mission trip to El Salvador! If the one basic truth of Christianity is that faith is best shown in love for one another and especially for the neediest, then our young people have certainly learned their faith very well. 6 In Sympathy David J. McCann Our parish mourns the passing of David J. McCann on January 25th. David was a graduate of St. Anthony s High School, and a Board Member of the Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was a wonderfully generous and compassionate man. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on January 30th at Sacred Hearts Basilica. Our sympathies go out to his wife, Shannon, his parents, family and friends. In Our Parish Walter Ted Stanton Our parish mourns the passing of Walter Stanton, known as Ted, on January 20th. Ted was a wonderfully interesting and intelligent man with a quick wit and dry sense of humor. He was a Fordham graduate who made corporate law his career. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on January 25th at Sacred Hearts Basilica. Burial followed at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Cemetery. Our sympathies go out to his wife, Anne and his children: Anne, Elizabeth, Tony, Peter, & Christopher and 8 grandchildren, family and friends. McGann-Mercy High School to hold one-stop registration for School Year Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan Junior High and High School in Riverhead will hold registration for the upcoming school year on Saturday, February 8th, from 9 AM 12 PM. All incoming 7th 11th graders and parents are strongly encouraged to attend this one-stop registration event. Bring all required paperwork from the registration packet. 7 A Note from Religious Education Director Jennifer Ferrantino We had a wonderful Confirmation Enrollment Mass and dinner last weekend! Thank you to all the parents and sponsors for coming and supporting this Confirmation class! It was a great way to show our support to the Confirmation candidates making this most important step in faith. Tuesday, May 13, 2014 Bishop Perez will be here at Sacred Hearts to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please contact me if you are not getting the confirmation information. Please contact me with any questions or jferrantino@shjmbasilica.org Religious Education Feast of St. Blaise :: Blessing of Throats This year the Feast of St. Blaise falls on Monday, February 3 The traditional blessing of throats for our protection from sickness and spiritual health will be celebrated as part of our noon mass. Come receive this special blessing.

8 Our Lady of the Hamptons Our Parish School Three teams of seventh grade Technology students of Miss Erin Boughton were judged the winners of the top three prizes in the technology/robotics competition sponsored by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Their work was centered around creation of efficient roller coasters from common household items. The pre-registration period for admission to Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School is now open for inquiry, interviews and application leading toward admission for September Early applications are advised for the pre-school, kindergarten and grades 1-5. Actual acceptance letters will be sent on February 7. Looking ahead to the school year, OLH will see the completion of the new classroom extension to the Wellness Center that will house the expanded high school prep program for grades six through eight, as well as the upgrading of the technology program and continued showcasing of its Fine Arts program. High school prep study skills and expanded foreign language will be offered along with Regents programs in Integrated Math and Biology. Please contact the school at or visit the website for details. Consideration is being given to opening the OLH Pre-school at the Southampton campus (if there is sufficient registration) in September The decision will be made prior to March 1. Two volunteers work together for a month and the schedule usually is an hour on Monday & Friday mornings. There is a great sense of satisfaction in being part of this committee and in helping maintain our beautiful Basilica.
