2 ch 2015 Health Note ch is National Nutrition Month. Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle is this year s theme. It encourages us to eat healthy and stay active every day. We celebrate eating healthy and being healthy. ch is the beginning of spring. A time when many fruits and vegetables are ripe and in season. The weather is beginning to warm-up, which means it s a great time to be outdoors. Think about growing your own fruits and vegetables. Maybe starting your own vegetable garden! Children love to grow their own healthy foods, because they like being involved in planting them, picking them and eating them. It s fun and healthy for the whole family. Healthy fruits and vegetables can be grown in a garden, on a porch, or on a window seal, in containers like empty milk cartons and water bottles, small fl ower pots or baskets, and even in rain boots and car tires. All you need are seeds, soil, water and sun. Be creative. Have fun! Meals prepared at home made with fresh ingredients often taste better. Here are some tasty ideas using springtime seasonal fruits and vegetables: Avocados: stir up some fresh guacamole Strawberries: blend a smoothie Green Peas and Snap Peas: eat right off the vine or in a fresh salad Asparagus: grill up with some olive oil Berries: add fl avor and color on top of low-fat yogurt Swiss Chard and Collard Greens: steam up or mix in a fresh salad with lemon and seasoning These foods are plentiful during this time of year, easy to grow and full of good nutrition. They are low in calories and saturated fat, high in fi ber and rich in vitamins and minerals. They even cost less because they are in season. And, remember that canned, frozen, dried and juiced fruits and vegetables are healthy and convenient options. Choose a variety. Being active every day is another way to be as healthy as you can be. You can do it! It s easy and free. Put the car keys away. Take a stroll with your children to school. Take the family on a trip and walk to the local market. Use your imagination. What great conversations you will have and stories to tell. Become a part of National Nutrition Month this ch. Try something new. Grow something fresh. Make a plan. Share with your family, neighbors and friends. Enjoy the outdoors. Walk or dance, run or swim, hike in the hills or on the beach, or spend a day at the park. With ch comes spring, so spring into action with National Nutrition Month! 1

Estamos celebrando el comer saludable y el ser sanos. zo es el principio de la primavera. Un tiempo de muchas frutas y verduras, cuando se encuentran en su temporada y maduras. Es el tiempo cuando los días son más calurosos, ideales para pasarla muy bien afuera. Piensen en sembrar su propia fruta y verdura. Quizás, su propio jardín! A los niños les encanta sembrar sus propios alimentos saludables porque les gusta ayudar a plantar, cosechar y comerlos. Es divertido y saludable para toda la familia. Las frutas y verduras son saludables y se pueden sembrar un jardín, en el patio de su casa o en un plantero. Sea creativo. Diviértase! Las comidas hechas en casa con ingredientes frescos tienen mejor sabor. Aquí le damos unas ideas sabrosas de frutas y verduras de la primavera: Aguacates: buenos para un guacamole Fresas: para sus licuados Judías verdes (chicharos) y guisantes: listos para comer de la vaina o frescos en una ensalada Espárragos: con aceite de olivo a la parrilla Bayas como las fresas y frambuesas: le dan sabor y color a un yogur bajo en grasa Acelgas y repollo: al vapor o en una mezcla de ensalada fresca con limón y sazón Estos alimentos abundan en esta temporada del año, son fáciles de sembrar y están repletos de buena nutrición. Son bajos en calorías y grasa saturada, altos en fi bra y ricos en vitaminas y minerales. Cuestan menos porque están en temporada. Y, recuerden que ya sea de lata, congelados, secos o el jugo de fruta y verduras, todas son opciones saludables y convenientes. Elija una variedad. El ser activo todos los días es otra manera de estar tan sano como pueda estarlo. Si se puede y usted puede! Es fácil y gratis. Guarde las llaves de su carro. Camine con sus hijos a la escuela. Ingredients 1 cup lowfat plain yogurt 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups assorted fruit, chopped 1/2 cup mini-shredded wheat biscuit cereal coarsely crushed 1 tablespoon almonds, sliced (optional) cinammon to taste Preparation 1. In a small bowl, mix together yogurt and vanilla. 2. Spoon half of the yogurt mixture into two small serving bowls. Top each bowl with fruit, cereal, and almonds Sprinkle with cinnamon.
