1 Junio/June 2008 Volumen 1 /Volume 1 La Curacao Times INFORMACION ES NECESARIA PARA ENTENDER EL CAMBIO INFORMATION IS NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND CHANGE LA CURACAO ha pasado por diferentes fases de crecimiento durante sus 25 años de historia. Cada una de esas fases ha sido importante en su momento y de mucho valor para nuestra actual posición como exitosa empresa de ventas de nuestros productos. Yo espero, que esta revista, a través de sus futuras ediciones y varios artículos, contribuya para que cada división y sus líderes, puedan ayudar a nuestros asociados a entender mucho de los cambios que continuaremos atravesando en esta organización. El Departamento de Recursos Humanos es el departamento donde todo se pone en conjunto para cada uno de nuestros muchos asociados. A través de reclutamiento, orientación, beneficios, el manual del asociado, entrenamiento y desarrollo así como también funciones y servicios para los asociados, Recursos Humanos se asocia con cada uno de ellos y trata de proveer la información necesaria para ayudarlos a ser exitosos en LA CURA- CAO. Esto es cada vez más importante puesto que seguimos creciendo y la estandarización de todas nuestras pólizas y procedimientos se hace cada vez más indispensables para el éxito de nuestra compañía. Mi primer mentor de Recursos Humanos me enseño que parte de ser exitoso como profesional del área es sentirse cómodo repitiendo la misma información varias veces. Ella diría, que una vez que yo halla repetido la misma información varias veces, debo planear repetirla unas veces mas y aun así esperar oir, Yo no sabia o Nadie me dijo. Para que las cosas cambien, primero tengo que cambiar yo. LA CURACAO tiene más de dos mil asociados. Cada uno de nuestros asociados se merece toda la información que le podamos dar para ayudarlos a entender la visión y misión de la compañía y sus pólizas y procedimientos en todas las áreas que tengan que ver con sus funciones. El Departamento de Recursos Humanos esta también desarrollando programas para fortalecer las funciones de nuestros Supervisores y Gerentes, en todas las áreas, para que puedan ayudarlos a servir mejor a sus empleados directos. LA CURACAO has gone through many phases of growth throughout its 25 years of history. Each one of these phases has been important in their time and of much value to our current standing as a successful retailer of our products. This newsletter, through its future editions and various articles I expect will be contributed by various divisions and their leaders, will help our associates understand the many changes that we continue to experience throughout the organization. -Anónimo. Through recruitment, orientation, benefits, employee handbook, training and development as well as employee functions and services, HR partners with each one of our associates and tries to provide all the necessary information to help them be successful in LA CURACAO. This is even more important as we continue to grow and the need to standardize all our policies and procedures becomes more important for our company s success. My first HR mentor taught me that part of being a successful HR professional was to feel comfortable repeating information numerous times. She would say that once I had repeated myself a few times with any information, to plan on repeating myself just a few more times and still know that there would always be someone who could easily say, I didn t know or Nobody told me. LA CURACAO has over two thousand associates. Each one of our associates is deserving of all information that will help them understand the company s vision and mission, its policies and procedures in all areas that pertain to the role as an employee. The HR Department is also developing programs to strengthen the role of our Supervisors and Managers in all areas that can help them better serve their direct employees. Actualización del Seguro Medico Como ustedes saben, La Curacao tomo, este año, la decisión de cambiar nuestra compañía de seguro medico de Blue Shield a Health Net. Efectivo el 1ero de Junio, cualquier reclamo, autorizaciones, prescripciones de medicamentos, y/o referencias tendrán que ser procesadas por Health Net. Por favor, informen a su doctor principal de este cambio, para que ellos puedan pedir esta información a Health Net. Para los asociados que no se inscribieron en nuestro plan medico o dental, nuestro plan de inscripciones abiertas se hará en el mes de Abril de cada año. Si usted califica bajo las Calificaciones por Evento, usted no tendrá que esperar hasta que se abran las inscripciones el próximo año - esas rezones son Matrimonio, nacimiento o adopción, y previa cancelación de seguro medico con otra compañía. Usted tendrá 30 días después de la fecha del matrimonio, nacimiento/adopción o cancelación del seguro medico con otra compañía, para inscribirse. Si pasan los 30 días usted tendrá que esperar hasta la fecha de inscripciones abiertas del próximo año. Health Insurance Update As you are aware, La Curacao made the decision to change our medical carrier this year from Blue Shield to Health Net. Effective June 1, any claims, authorizations, prescription refills and/or referrals will have to be processed by Health Net. Please inform your primary physician of this change, so they may request this information from Health Net. For those associates that did not enroll into our medical or dental plan, our open enrollment is held in April of every year. If you qualify under a Qualifying Event you do not have to wait until next year s open enrollment - the reasons are Marriage, Newborn or Adoption, and Previous health insurance cancellation with other carrier. You will have 30 days from the date of marriage, birth/ adoption or cancellation from previous health insurance carrier. If the 30 days pass, you will then have to wait until next year s open enrollment. Please remember that we are here to help - just give us a call or come by the department and we will gladly be of service to you.

4 Page 4 Fundación La Curacao y El Children Hospital La Curacao por Segundo año ha preparado una celebración especial para el Día de Las Madres en el Hospital de Niños de Los Angeles, en reconocimiento a las madres admirables de los pacientes. A ellas se les agradeció su sacrificio abnegado durante el cuidado prolongado hacia sus hijos afectados por enfermedades mortales. Asociados voluntarios de cada tienda hicieron posible éste evento. También en cada festividad, hemos lanzado una campaña de recaudación de fondos que beneficia al Hospital para que pueda concluir la construcción del Hospital Nuevo que abrirá sus puertas en La Curacao ha sido la primera empresa privada que ha tenido la iniciativa de darles reconocimientos a estas madres especiales y planea continuar con estas festividades y con las campañas de recaudación de fondos. Sin embargo, éste gran esfuerzo no sería posible sin el apoyo de todos nuestros asociados, por eso nos sentimos altamente agradecidos con todos ellos. By Elsa Baruch Community Services Manager La Curacao for the 2 nd year has prepared a special Mothers Day celebration at the Children s Hospital in Los Angeles, in recognition for the amazing mothers of the patients. They were thanked for their sacrifice during their long-term support and care for their terminal ill children. Volunteer associates from each store made the event possible. Also, at each festivity, we have launched a fundraising campaign that will benefit the Hospital in the construction of a new Hospital that will open its doors on La Curacao has been the first private company that has come up with this initiative to recognize these special mothers and it is our plan to continue with this festivity along with the fund raising campaign. En los últimos días hemos escuchado mucho hablar del programa Art of The Sale y muchos podremos preguntarnos, Que significa?... o Para quien está dirigido?... Quien debe tomarlo? El primer día de mayo, H.R. Training & Development realizó oficialmente el lanzamiento, teniendo una reunión exitosa con representantes de nuestras 10 tiendas e invitados del área corporativa. Este programa fue diseñado y estructurado por Ron Azarkman, para él éste proyecto es una de las tres bases que deben tener los vendedores para desarrollar sus habilidades en el piso de ventas. Por lo cual sus expectativas para el desarrollo e implementación del mismo por parte de cada vendedor, es vital. El objetivo del programa es que cada uno de nuestros asociados de ventas de LA CURACAO, a través de un programa intensivo de entrenamiento, fortalezcan su confianza y habilidades de venta, de tal manera que su carrera en ventas se desarrolle de ser no solo un trabajo regular sino una profesión orientada a resultados de los que puedan sentirse orgullosos por el resto del tiempo en La Curacao Cada tienda tendrá tres entrenadores los cuales han sido nombrados para apoyar en el desarrollo e implementación correcta del programa en cada una de nuestras tiendas. Actualmente los entrenadores están en un programa de Train the Trainers, lo cual les ayudará a comprender la forma de desarrollar y comprender el programa. Todo el equipo de ventas tendrá la oportunidad de recibir el programa de Art of The Sale, incluyendo supervisores, para lo cual se harán posteriormente horarios específicos para cada tienda y departamento, para que todos reciban y conozcan el programa a fondo. Muy pronto seguirán teniendo más noticias sobre éste tema, y un corto tiempo, todos los vendedores podrán conocer todos los detalles que significan ser un tigre de ART OF THE SALE In the last couple of days we have heard about the Art of the Sale program. We might ask ourselves, what does this mean?... or To whom is this program addressed to?... Who should take it? On May first, H.R. Training & Development officially kicked off the program, having a successful meeting with our representatives from our 10 locations and guests from corporate area. This program was designed and structured by Ron Azarkman. For him this project is one of the three bases that sales associates must have in order to develop their abilities on the sales floor. The expectations for the development and implementation of the program from each sales associate, is vital. The objective of the program is that each of our LA CURACAO sales associates, through an intensive training program, will strengthen their sales techniques and self confidence, and develop their sales careers from a regular job to a result-oriented profession. Each store will have three trainers, which have already been identify to support in the right development and implementation of the program at each one of our stores. Currently, the trainers are in the Train the Trainers program. The idea of this training is help them to understand the way to develop and learn the program. All of the sales team will have the opportunity to receive the Art of the Sale program. Supervisors and Managers will also participate in learning new sales techniques. Soon you will be receiving more news regarding this Topic. Through this training you will recognize what it means to be an ART OF THE SALE tiger. Este Enterado, y este Seguro Be Aware, And Be Safe Most accidents happen because individuals are not aware of the hazards, their surroundings, are not paying attention while they work, or simply not thinking that safety is important in their job. La Curacao can and does provide safety training, safety programs, implements policies & procedures, tools and personal protective equipment, but all this can t protect you if you don t look out for yourself or you chose to ignore the policies or use the equipment properly. Being aware of safety means always having the right information to do the job safely - and asking if you don t know. It means taking the time before you start working to identify potential hazards and taking the proper precautions to protect yourself. And it also means following safety procedures and focusing your full attention on the job the whole time you re working. Never be complacent and think that accidents happen to others and not you ~ because you will be proved wrong! One of your most important safety responsibilities is simply to be aware of the need for taking proper safety precautions. Here s what to do: ~ Take the time to look for and identify hazardsand do something about them. Report them to your supervisor and/or Safety Committee member or Safety Dept. ~ Never assume that someone else will take care of it ~ you take care of it. Remember the injury or life you save could be your own! ~ Examine the daily the environment you are working in, the equipment used, and the situations that are part of the job. ~ Look for unsafe acts, unsafe practices, unsafe equipment, unsafe facilities as well as unsafe conditions in your work area/facility. ~ Be alert to anything that simply doesn t look, smell, or feel right ~ trust your instincts, don t hesitate to ask your supervisor or management for clarification or direction. ~ Safety is EVERYONE S responsibility - there is no escaping it ~ it s company policy and it s a state & federal law! Additionally, all associates are reminded that working safely is a condition of work. What this means is that if you violate the established safety regulations and practices you can be disciplined up to and including termination. All La Curacao associates must take responsibility for their safety and the safety of their fellow associates. Associates should NEVER put themselves or others at risk of injury. Associates are to NEVER operate any equipment for which they have not been trained and/or certified to operate under ANY circumstances. In case of an accident, no matter how slight, everyone is reminded that they are to report their injury immediately to your immediate supervisor or next level supervision, if supervisor is unavailable. La Curacao tiene y provee entrenamientos y programas de seguridad, implementa pólizas y procedimientos, y facilita herramientas y equipo de protección personal; pero todo esto no le protege si no esta pendiente de si mismo o si elige ignorar las pólizas o utilizar el equipo apropiado. Estar enterado acerca de seguridad significa que siempre debemos tener la información correcta de como hacer nuestro trabajo de manera segura preguntando si no sabemos. Esto significa tomar el tiempo antes de empezar a trabajar para identificar peligros potenciales y tomar las debidas precauciones para protegerse. También significa seguir los procedimientos de seguridad y enfocar toda su atención en el trabajo en todo momento. Nunca se sienta confiado de que los accidentes le pasan a otros y no a usted ~ porque podría esta equivocado. Una de sus mayores responsabilidades con respecto a seguridad es simplemente estar consciente de la necesidad de tomar nuestras propias precauciones. Para ello, puede hace lo siguiente: ~ Tome el tiempo de mirar e identificar peligros y haga algo al respecto. Repórtelas a su supervisor y/o a un miembro del Comité de Seguridad o al Departamento de Seguridad. ~ Nunca asuma que alguien mas se encargara de hacerlo ~ usted encárguese. Recuerde que la herida que esta evitando o la vida que esta salvando puede ser la suya propia! ~ Examine diariamente el ambiente en el que esta trabajando, el equipo que esta usando y las situaciones que sean parte de su trabajo. ~ Mire si se cometen actos inseguros, si se utiliza equipo inseguro, si el lugar es inseguro así como también condiciones inseguras en su área de trabajo. ~ Este alerta de si algo simplemente no se ve bien, huele o se siente bien ~ crea en sus instintos, no dude en preguntar a su supervisor o gerente para que le aclare la situación o le de dirección. ~ Seguridad es responsabilidad de TODOS no hay escapatoria ~ es póliza de la compañía y es ley federal y estatal! Adicionalmente, todos los asociados deben recordar que tener seguridad es una condición de trabajo. Esto significa que si usted viola alguna algunas de las regulaciones y practicas de seguridad que están establecidas, usted puede ser disciplinado e incluso despedido. Todos los asociados de La Curacao tienen que tener responsabilidad por su seguridad y por la seguridad de sus compañeros de trabajo. Los asociados NUNCA deben ponerse en riesgo, a si mismos ni a otros, de tener una lastimadura. Los asociados no deben, en ninguna circunstancia, operar ningún equipo sin haber sido entrenados y/o certificados previamente. En caso de una accidente, no importa lo pequeño que sea, todos deben recordar que deben reportarlo inmediatamente a su supervisor o a la persona que este a cargo, si el supervisor no esta disponible.
