In some cases, it can also express what people ARE DOING. Below are the conjugations for regular verbs: -ar -er -ir o amos o emos o imos as áis es éis es ís a an e en e en El imperativo familiar To form the familiar command form (Tú command), one uses the él, ella, Usted conjugation in the present tense. Below are the irregular verbs that do not follow the rule: Ser Sé Estar Esté Ir Ve Salir Sal Poner Pon Hacer Haz Tener Ten Venir - Ven
6 Using the phrases from the first column, create affirmative tú commands in the second column. Finally, change the command with the direct object from the 2 nd column into a command using a direct object pronoun in the 3 rd column. Infinitivos: El imperativo familiar: El imperativo con pronombres: 1. Leer el libro Lee el libro Léelo 2. Pasar la aspiradora 3. Limpiar los platos 4. Ayudar a tus hermanas 5. Arregla el garaje 6. Poner la mesa 7. Hacer la cama 8. Preparar el desayuno 9. Organizar la habitación 10. The verbs below are irregular and do not follow the rule: Dar no des Ir No vayas Ser No seas E star No estés Saber No sepas Using the phrases from the first column, create negative tú commands in the second column. Below are the endings for regular verbs: -ar -er/-ir é amos í imos aste asteis iste isteis ó aron ió ieron These verbs are considered irregular in the preterit tense, as their roots change. All use the same endings: tener - tuv andar - anduv estar - estuv hacer - hic querer - quis venir - vin poder - pud poner - pus saber sup* traer traj* decir dij * conducir - conduj e aste o amos isteis ieron *eron The following verbs are also irregular in the preterite tense: Ir (Ser) fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron (Ser is used only in the él and ellos form only in the preterit) Ver vi, viste, vio, vimos, visteis, vieron Dar di, diste, dio, dimos, disteis, dieron -gar, -car, -zar, irregular, en la forma yo, en el pretérito Verbs ending in gar, car, and zar have irregular spelling ONLY in the yo form in the preterite tense Example: Jugar jugué Tocar toqué Organizar organicé
8 Los verbos reflexivos Reflexive verbs are identified by their endings arse, erse, and irse. They are actions that are performed and received by the speaker. While in English it is often redundant to say something like I dress myself, it is grammatically necessary in Spanish. This is represented by placing the reflexive pronoun in front of the conjugation of the verb. Reflexive verbs can be conjugated in ANY tense. Reflexive Verbs conjugated in the present tense Ducharse Dormirse Me ducho Nos duchamos Me duermo Nos dormimos Te duchas Os ducháis Te duermes Os dormís Se ducha Se duchan Se duerme Se duermen Reflexive Verbs conjugated in the preterite tense Ducharse Dormirse Me duché Nos duchamos Me dormí Nos dormimos Te duchaste Os duchasteis Te dormiste Os dormisteis Se duchó Se ducharon Se durmió Se durmieron* *Some verbs, reflexive and non-reflexive, are stem-changing in the preterit tense. While they are often referred as boot verbs in the present tense, in the preterit tense, they are shoe verbs, since the stem only changes spelling in the él and ellos form of the verb. Other shoe verbs are as follows: Sentir/Sentirse (i) Divertirse (i) Reírse (i) Mentir (i) Pedir (i) Dormir/Dormirse (u) Caerse (y) Leer (y) El imperfecto One uses the imperfect tense to describe a habitual, continuous, or repetitive event in the past, what someone USED TO DO. Below are the conjugations for regular verbs: -ar -er/ir aba ábamos ía íamos abas abais ías íais aba aban ía ían
9 There are 3 irregular verbs in the imperfect tense: Ir: iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban Ser: era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran Ver: veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían Los pronombres del complemento directo The direct object is the object that receives the action of the verb. The direct object pronoun replaces the direct object in sentences when it has been previously referenced in the dialogue. For example: Please clean your bedroom! Aww, Mom, I don t want to. Sorry. Clean it! It is the direct object pronoun. Because nouns have gender in Spanish the direct object pronoun can be either lo or la, based upon the gender of the noun to which it refers. If it refers to el dormitorio, you choose lo. If it refers to la mesa, you choose la as t he direct object pronoun. Direct objects can also be plural. Please clean the dishes. I said to clean them 5 minutes ago. When the direct object is plural, it is replaced by either los or las. If them refers to los platos you choose los. If them refers to las sillas, choose las. Direct objects can also refer to a person. Please give me the papers. Serve her dinner first. In this case, you use me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los, las. Lo Los Me Nos Te Os La las Lo La Los Las it them use if direct object is a person Los pronombres del complemento indirecto The indirect object is the person that indirectly benefits from the action of the verb. The indirect object pronoun replaces the indirect object in sentences when the person/persons has/have been previously referenced in the dialogue. For example: Please give the money to your brother! Aww, Mom, I don t want to. Sorry. Give him the money!. Indirect object pronouns always refer to PEOPLE.
10 le can mean him or her les can mean them or you all Indirect Object Pronouns me nos te os le les El presente del progresivo The present progressive is formed by conjugating estar in the present tense, then adding the present participle/gerund(ending in ando, or iendo). It expresses what is happening at the present moment. Forming the Present Participle: AR verbs drop the ar, add ando hablar-hablando estudiar-estudiando ER/IR verbs drop the er/-ir, add iendo vivir-viviendo comer-comiendo Irregular participles caer-cayendo decir-diciendo dormir-durmiendo creer-creyendo pedir-pidiendo morir-muriendo leer-leyendo repetir-repitiendo ir-yendo oír-oyendo servir-sirviendo venir-viniendo divertir-divirtiendo Estoy hablando. I am talking. Estamos comiendo ahora. We are eating now. Progressives with pronouns You have two locations where you can place reflexive, direct and/or indirect object pronouns. 1. Directly before the verb estar 2. Attached onto the gerund, adding an accent on the a of ando or e of iendo Me están llamando ahora? Están llamándome ahora? Nos estamos divirtiendo. Estamos divirtiéndonos. Are they calling me now? We are having fun.
Some examples. I wash my clothes, I wash the dishes, I wash the car, I wash the windows. I wash my hands, I wash my hair, I wash my face.
Reflexive verbs In this presentation, we are going to look at a special group of verbs called reflexives. Let s start out by thinking of the English verb wash. List several things that you can wash. Some
