On both situations Jesus appears in the foreground. In one of them he gives the disciples multiplied bread to distribute to the people. In the other he goes towards them walking on the water, in the middle of a storm that endangers the boat that he is "forced" to climb to go "to the other shore" of the lake. Tradition has seen in this boat shaken by the waves, but saved by the Lord of the shipwreck, an image of the Church that sails, against the wind and tide, towards the shore to which the Risen One has passed. The multitude of those who follow the Lord to the depopulated receive from his hand that satisfies all hunger. The disciples, who strive to go to the appointment with the Lord, have the impression that the boat will capsize. 'Be confident! Storms can shake the boat, but they will not sink it, 'says the Lord. The account of St. Matthew includes other elements that expand and clarify this interpretation. The reaction of the disciples and that of Peter makes one think of the first apparitions of the resurrection. When the Risen One appears before them, the disciples also think they see a ghost. Then, as on this occasion, the Lord addresses them reassuring them: "Cheer up, it's me, do not be afraid!" At the same time he reproaches them for their lack of faith and their doubts. Finally, in the Easter apparitions, just as in the lake, the scene ends with a kind of liturgy. The disciples "bow down" to the Lord and confess their faith: "You really are the son of God!" Whatever his degree of relationship to the Lord, the experience of his presence and his closeness to him, every disciple, of whom Peter appears as an example, goes through moments of doubt and distrust. That the moment you begin to lose your foot, shout, "Lord save me!". The Lord will hold out his hand to keep it from sinking. That doubts of faith do not prevent us from participating in the liturgy, prostrating ourselves with others, with the Church, to proclaim: "You are truly the Son of God, the Lord!" "I have faith, but I doubt, help me!" (Mark 9:24) And that, when the silence of God discourages us, let us listen carefully: he is still there, in the murmur of a "soft breeze".

4 Page 4 XIX Sunday of Ordinary Time August 13, 2017 DOMINGO XIX DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO En los evangelios, el relato de la multiplicación de los panes y el de la tempestad calmada constituyen una especie de díptico. En ambas hojas Jesús aparece en primer plano. En una de ellas entrega a los discípulos el pan multiplicado para que lo distribuyan a la gente. En la otra va hacia ellos caminando sobre las aguas, en medio de una tempestad que pone en peligro la barca a la que él esta apremiado a subir para ir a la otra orilla del lago. La tradición ha visto en esta barca sacudida por las olas, pero salvada por el Señor del naufragio, una imagen de la Iglesia que navega, contra viento y marea, hacia la orilla a la que el Resucitado se le ha adelantado. La multitud de los que siguen al Señor hasta el despoblado recibe de su mano que sacia toda hambre. Los discípulos, que se esfuerzan por acudir a la cita con el Señor, tienen la impresión de que la barca va a zozobrar. Tened confianza! Las tempestades pueden sacudir la barca, pero no la hundirán, les dice el Señor. El relato de San Mateo incluye otros elementos que amplían y precisan esta interpretación. La reacción de los discípulos y la de Pedro hacen pensar en las primeras apariciones de la resurrección. Cuando el Resucitado se presenta ante ellos, los discípulos también creen ver visto a un fantasma. Entonces, como en esta ocasión, el Señor se dirige a ellos tranquilizándolos: Animo, soy yo, no tengan miedo!. Al mismo tiempo les reprocha su falta de fe y sus dudas. Finalmente, en las apariciones pascuales, lo mismo que en el lago, la escena acaba con una especie de liturgia. Los discípulos <<se postran>> ante el Señor y confiesan su fe: Realmente eres el hijo de Dios!. Sea cual sea su grado de relación al Señor, la experiencia de su presencia y de su proximidad a él, todo discípulo, del que Pedro aparece aquí como ejemplo, pasa por momentos de duda y desconfianza. Que en el momento en que empiece a perder pie, grite: Señor sálvame!. El Señor le tendera la mano para que no se hunda. Que las dudas de fe no impidan participar en la liturgia, postrarse con los demás, con la Iglesia, para proclamar: Realmente eres el Hijo de Dios, el Señor!. Tengo fe, pero dudo, ayúdame!. (Mc. 9:24) Y que, cuando el silencio de Dios nos desanime, escuchemos con atención: él sigue ahí, en el murmullo de una brisa suave.
