3 Page 3 September August 23, 26, 2018 FROM THE Dear friends: PRIESTS DESK According to the story of Mark the evangelist, Jesus speaks with his disciples about his death. Jesus' surrender to God's Project will not end in the triumphant success his disciples suspect. In the end there will be resurrection, but although it may seem incredible, Jesus will be crucified and treated as a wrongdoer. We, the followers of Jesus must know this. But the disciples are not thinking the same. While Jesus speaks of surrender, they are talking about power and being superior to others. The detail that the evangelist gives us is very interesting. Jesus sat down, called the twelve and told them... so that this will never be forgotten. <Who wants to be the first, is the last of all and the server of all. > Does the church have to abandon social power? What congregation or religious movement within the church is more important? What lay person, priest or Bishop is more important? Important are all those who, without thinking much about their prestige or personal reputation, dedicate themselves without ambition and with total freedom to serve, to collaborate in the project of Jesus. We must not forget, the important thing is not to look good, but to do good by following Jesus.Your Brother in Christ, F. Carlos J. Borgos Del Escritorio Queridos amigos: Del Sacerdote Según el relato de Marcos el evangelista, Jesús habla con sus discípulos acerca de su muerte. La entrega de Jesús al Proyecto de Dios no terminara en el éxito triunfal que esperan sus discípulos. Al final habrá resurrección, pero aunque parezca increíble, Jesús será crucificado y tratado como un malhechor. Los seguidores de Jesús debemos saber esto. Pero los discípulos están en otra sintonía. Mientras Jesús habla de entrega, ellos están hablando de poder y de ser superiores a los demás. Es muy interesante el detalle que nos brinda el evangelista. Jesús se sentó, llamo a los doce y les dijo.. como para que esto nunca se olvide. <Quien quiera ser el primero, que sea el ultimo de todos y el servidor de todos. > Tiene la iglesia que renunciar al poder social? Que congregación o movimiento religioso dentro de la iglesia es mas importante? Que laico, sacerdote u Obispo es mas importante? Importantes son todos los que sin pensar mucho en su prestigio o reputación personal, se dedica sin ambiciones y con total libertad a servir, a colaborar en el proyecto de Jesús. 4 Page 4 September August 23, 26, 2018 About Catechetical Sunday The ministry of the Word is a fundamental element of evangelization through all its stages, because it involves the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God "The word of God nourishes both evangelizers and those who are being evangelized so that each one may continue to grow in his or her Christian life" (National Directory for Catechesis [NDC] [Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2005], no. 17). Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church s teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday. The 2018 theme will be "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Why do we have a special day set aside to commission catechists? Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church s life... her inner growth and correspondence with God s plan depend essentially on catechesis (no. 7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others. How are parents, the primary catechists of their children, recognized on Catechetical Sunday? Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes an optional blessing of parents and guardians. Acerca del Domingo Catequetico El ministerio de la palabra es un elemento fundamental de la evangelización en todas sus etapas porque implica la proclamación de Jesucristo, la Palabra eterna de Dios. "La palabra de Dios nutre tanto a los evangelizadores como a quienes son evangelizados, por eso cada uno de ellos puede continuar creciendo en su vida cristiana" (Directorio Nacional para la Catequesis [DNC] [Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2005], no. 17). Por qué celebramos el Domingo Catequético? La catequesis es un ministerio distinto y especial en la Iglesia. Como deja en claro el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica: "La catequesis está unida íntimamente a toda la vida de la Iglesia... su crecimiento interior, su correspondencia con el designio de Dios dependen esencialmente de ella" (no. 7). Este ministerio de enseñar en nombre de la Iglesia tiene una profunda dignidad, y es por ello que los catequistas son comisionados formalmente por la Iglesia. Por tanto, es natural que reservemos un día para resaltar este ministerio e invitar a toda la comunidad de la Iglesia a pensar en nuestra responsabilidad de compartir nuestra fe con otros. Cómo se reconoce a los padres, los primeros catequistas de sus hijos, en el Domingo Catequético? Los padres son verdaderamente los primeros catequistas de sus hijos. Ellos preparan el suelo y siembran las primeras semillas de la fe. El Domingo Catequético no sólo destacamos el trabajo de los catequistas en las parroquias y escuelas, sino que también encomendamos a los padres y tutores y los alentamos a tomar en serio su papel de hacer de sus hogares católicos un lugar donde la fe se transmite a la siguiente generación. Por ello, el rito de bendición de los catequistas utilizado en el Domingo Catequético incluye una bendición optativa de los padres y tutores.
