The response from the community continues to be very positive. Public support for the project is strong with more than 70% of Richmond residents favoring modernization in a recent public opinion survey. People want to know that modernization will reduce pollution, make the refinery safer and create job opportunities for local residents. Our $1 billion investment will replace some of the refinery s oldest processing equipment with modern technology that is inherently safer and exceeds the nation s toughest air quality standards. The City is expected to make a final decision on the project this summer and, until then, there will be plenty more opportunities to learn about our efforts to create a newer, safer, cleaner refinery. A Commitment to Safety BY RICH GUTTCHEN Operating safely and reliably is a core value at Chevron. Nothing is more important to us than our commitment to safety, and each year we invest approximately $185 million in the ongoing maintenance and safety of our equipment. Approximately 20 percent of our workforce is dedicated to inspecting our pipes, tanks and other equipment on a full-time basis to ensure that we re operating safely. If something is not working properly, we bring on additional crews of mechanics, electricians, welders, pipefitters and other experts to make repairs. Another 40 full-time, state-licensed inspectors, up from 15 just two years ago, help us make sure that we re complying with some of the nation s toughest safety and air quality standards. These inspectors validate our own internal reports and allow us to operate with confidence, knowing that we re doing everything we can to operate the refinery safely and reliably. Modernization will replace some of our oldest equipment with more modern technology that is also more reliable. However, it won t change the job of our team, which is to confirm the integrity of our equipment every day and to keep the refinery, our employees and this community safe.
