Pilar Asensio-Manrique pilar.asensio@yale.edu (203) 432-8067 Office #419 Ame Cividanes ame.cividanes@yale.edu (203) 432-1159 Office #210 The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is located in 82-90 Wall Street, 2nd floor. I. Course Description: Analysis and discussion of the historical, social and cultural development of Spain from the Civil War to the present. Content developed through a variety of materials (literary texts, essays, films, television, music, visual arts). Last four weeks offered in Bilbao, Spain. Classes are conducted in Spanish. II. Expanded Description: According to a recent worldwide study made by UNESCO, Spain is considered the country where the most profound social and material changes have occurred in the last 30 years. This class will be an introduction to the historical, cultural and social development of this fascinating country from the Civil War (1936-39) to the present. Topics will include the Civil War, the difficult conditions of the Postwar years, internalization and economic development, Europeanization, the perception of Spain s identity as in a permanent crisis, the emergence of a democratic state, the challenge of regional/domestic national identities, and contemporary social issues such as the changing role of women, religion, sexual attitudes and immigration. III. Course Policies: A. Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial to the successful attainment of the course objectives. Therefore, Departmental policy requires that students attend classes on a daily basis. You are allowed a maximum of one (1) absence over the course of the program. However, you may not miss any deadline. Additionally, three (3) tardiness in excess of ten minutes will count as one absence. Any student who accumulates more than one absence will have his/her final course grade lowered by two percentage points per each additional absence. If you accrue significant absences over the one allowed, your instructor may request cut restriction or that you withdraw from the course. B. Class Discussions: In the interest of stimulating conversation, some controversial topics will be discussed. You are encouraged to present, explain and defend either your own views or views you think might engage your classmates. You are not expected to agree with the views expressed in class, nor will your grade depend in any way on the views you choose to express. C. Readings: Readings must be prepared before class, as indicated in the syllabus. Keep in mind that careful review of the vocabulary and at least two readings of assigned texts are necessary in order to fully comprehend the assigned material. *Although this course principally focuses on a defined period (Spain 1936-present), please note that we will have several discussions, readings, and cultural excursions related to other past historical periods. The past is critical in studying the present; therefore, please be aware that sometimes it will be necessary to reflect upon these previous historical epochs.

SPAN S-248 Syllabus 2014 2 D. Participation: Students are expected to contribute to class discussion. Participation is the key to a lively class. 20% of the course grade will be based on contributions during class sessions. Class participation provides the opportunity to practice speaking, listening and understanding, and persuasive skills. Participation also shows the student s enthusiasm and preparation for the class. E. Writing: During the course of this intensive program, the student will have the opportunity to have 12 direct cultural experiences with the customs and traditions of Spain. These include living with a Basque family and directly experiencing and interacting with the art, culture, politics, environment of Spain and in particular Bilbao. More specifically, the student will experience the local culture in the following ways: 1. living with a Spanish family during the entire second half of the course 2. participating in a guided tour of the University of Deusto 3. participating in a guided tour of Bilbao 4. guided visit of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao 5. guided visit of the Museo de Bellas Artes 6. guided visit of the Ayuntamiento of Bilbao 7. attending four lectures about Spanish society, economy and culture presented by professors of the Universidad de Deusto 8. excursion to Burgos (Castilla-León) 9. excursion to the city of Pamplona during San Fermín, and to San Sebastián 10. excursion to the Monasterio de San Millán de la Cogolla (La Rioja), cradle of Castilian language 11. optional excursions to Guernica, Santurce, and to the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Carmen 12. optional visits of the Museo Arqueológico, Etnógrafo e Histórico Vasco; and, Museo Marítimo The students will write two compositions or papers in class on a topic selected by their professors. In addition, there will be a third composition evaluating the overall academic and personal experiences abroad. The student should bring a dictionary to class on writing-task days. In summary, the student will write three papers: 1. about one of the guided tours or visits. 2. about one of the excursions. 3. evaluating the personal and academic experiences abroad. Papers will be graded based on content, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Papers will contribute 45% to the student s final grade. F. Quizzes.
