Isaiah 51:1, 3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time In hearing today s Gospel, it seems that some persons might be led to believe that Jesus had come to abolish the old law and the words of the prophets. Jesus clarifies his position by stating that he did not come to abolish them but rather to fulfill them. In a rabbinical style, Jesus gives some concrete examples of what it means to fulfill the law and the prophets. Jesus then invites his listeners to consider a higher justice, one that implies a radical commitment from those who choose to follow him with full knowledge of the facts and with total clearness of mind and freedom of choice. Nevertheless, Jesus was not a man of halfmeasures. He wants a choice that is clear and firm. When you say yes, let your yes be yes; when you say no, let your no be no. Jesus knows well our limits. He will never demand of us something that is beyond our powers. When God asks for something, he also gives the power to accomplish it. Jesus said, Do you think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets? I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of the letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and who teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

PRESIDENTS DAY FEBRUARY 17 Monday of this week, February 17, is Presidents Day, a national holiday. At St. Gregory s, there will be only one mass on Monday--the 12:00 noon mass in English--after which the church will be closed for the remainder of the day. St. Gregory s School and the Rectory Office will be closed all day on Monday. WELCOME TO FR. CASWELL He had not yet arrived as of the writing of this Bulletin, but nevertheless we welcome again to St. Gregory s and New York City, Fr. Thomas Caswell of the Diocese of Spokane, who relieves Msgr. Crimmins during the latter s winter break in California. PLEASE HOLD UP SVDPS RUMMAGE DONATIONS For now, our parish conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is asking parishioners not to donate any goods of any kind for future sale. The problem is simply one of storage space. SVDPS has no plans for a rummage sale in the near future, and there is no extra storage space in the church basement for new donations. SVDPS is most grateful for our parishioners past generosity as regards donations. Please just await word, however, for when donations of sale items may resume. REPORT ON MAKING ALL THINGS NEW [ MATN ] During the months of January and February, MATN subcommittee meetings of the six West Side parishes in our cluster have been going on, and many ideas for future parish collaboration have been shared. While it is too soon to say what the cluster recommendations will be, parishioners should be aware that some changes in parish worship, programs and administration seem inevitable and are dictated by the concerns about the Archdiocese s future originally expressed by Cardinal Dolan. We ask parishioners to keep an open mind about change as the MATN process continues. ORIGINS OF ST. VALENTINE S DAY You all did see that on the LupercaI I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse. Was this ambition? Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act III, Scene II Valentine s Day has just passed, and there are many unknowns and many stories surrounding its origin. One story is that, on Feb. 14 & 15, the ancient Romans would celebrate the feast of the Lupercalia [see Julius Caesar above] on which a young man might draw, in a lottery, the name of a young woman who then became his concubine for one year. To discourage this un-christian practice, Pope Gelasius I changed the Lupercalian practice to one of drawing the name of a saint whom the young man was then to emulate for one year. But the prior association with amor continued to attach to February 14 /15. Many historians now discount this story, and other explanations of the identity of Valentine and his connection to romantic love exist.
