Begin by noting that when people need to buy food, they go to a market like this one, which sells fresh fruits and vegetables. Elicit what children know about such markets, about fruits, and about vegetables, using questions like these: Alguna vez fueron a un mercado? Qué vieron e hicieron ahí? Cuáles de las frutas y los vegetales de esta foto pueden nombrar? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the repetition of the phrase Veo. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book, children will read about some fruits and vegetables they can see at a market. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Have children demonstrate proper book-handling techniques: holding the book correctly, reading from front to back, looking at the picture on each page, and then reading the sentence below from left to right. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Use the word las from the book to review the /s/ sound with children. Then say words, one at a time, and have children raise their hands when they hear a word that ends with /s/: manzanas, veo, sandías, cantas, saltar, mercados. Blend the Sounds Say each word sound by sound and ask children to say it. Begin with /v/ /e/ /o/. What is the word? (veo) Continue with these words: las, los, mío, soy, gusta. ABC Order Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Display the names of the produce from (tomates, zanahorias, sandías, manzanas), and have children identify the fi rst letter in each. Focus on these letters, and help children refer to the alphabet chart to put these letters in ABC order. 3 Lesson 6:

Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 6.2 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Compare and Contrast Tell children that when they compare two things, they tell how the things are alike. When they contrast two things, they tell how the things are different. Model how to compare and contrast. Think Aloud Algunas manzanas son rojas.
