We appreciate the continued support for our PTO. Some of the monies earned will help support grade level field trips. I hope you were able to participate in parent teacher conferences. These conferences are a wonderful time to meet teachers and discuss areas of strengths and student potential. If you were unable to attend these conferences, please don t hesitate to contact your student s teacher if you have a specific area of concern. Our fall sports season is winding down. Congratulations to our Girls and Boys Cross Country teams, Girls Basketball teams, Daniel Morgan Cheerleaders, and JHHS Freshman Football teams. We enjoyed cheering on the great performances from our student athletes. Thank you to the coaches and parents who supported our teams. There will be no school for the students on November 4-5, 2013, due to Teacher Professional Days. Also, November 27-29, 2013 are Student/ Teacher holidays. We are having our first DMMS Family Bingo Night on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Additional information is in the newsletter. We hope to see you there! As Thanksgiving approaches, we hope you are able to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the coming holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving, Sarah A. Kish, Principal Climate Corner Last spring, we put this diagram in the newsletter to show the different parts of School Climate. I would like to highlight two specific parts. First, DMMS is committed to addressing substance use among our students. We know this is a constant concern for you as the parent. On Thursday, November 7, 2013 we are going to hold an evening program to talk about this growing concern. Please see the box at the right for details. We truly hope you can attend. Secondly, the Climate Team is ready to roll out our first Family Bingo Night on November 8, This is a great opportunity for your family and our staff and their families to enjoy some laughs and pizza! So, it looks like we all need to clear 2 nights in a row to be at DMMS!! As always, feel free to contact with any questions. Additionally, the meeting agenda and Treasurer s report will also be posted for review. A restructure of the PTO was introduced for the school year. Our goal is to maximize communication between the parents and the teachers through the Board. Parents and teachers are invited to contact the Board members at any time throughout the year with needs or concerns. The PTO Board will meet monthly to address these issues and report them in the PTO section of The Rifleman Gazette, which is mailed directly to your home each month. Additionally, the PTO Board will meet quarterly with the parents and teachers for face-to-face interaction and discussion of DMMS events. There are many more opportunities for parents to serve through PTO committees: Angel Fund, Honor Roll Celebration, Fall Fundraiser, Teacher Dinner, and Teacher Appreciation. We are hopeful that these changes will enable the PTO to be more of a benefit to Daniel Morgan and to encourage parent and teacher participation. Our will be here from Nov 11 15, This is a great place to begin your holiday shopping! Family Event Wednesday, November 13, 2013, from 4 until 6. We will have a story hour for younger children so that parents can The DMMS PTO Fall Fundraiser was a success with over $32,000 in sales by our families! Our school receives 40% of those sales and this money directly benefits the class field trips at the end of the year. In addition, the PTO will be able to support other events throughout the year. Thank you DMMS families for your support! KEEPING IN TOUCH: Information will be provided by the DMMS grade level representatives through the PTO Vice Presidents in this section of The Rifleman Gazette each month. 7 th grade: The 7th grade has been very busy. In English the students are working on novel studies based on their individual reading levels and they are continuing to work on their personal narratives and descriptive writings. Pre-Algebra has them solving and graphing inequalities and working on functions and relations. Our Civics department is teaching the basics of economics and the characteristics of the U.S. economy. As for sports, the winter will bring the start of boys basketball, wrestling and winter cheerleading. Be on the lookout for additional information on upcoming fundraising and volunteer opportunities! Happy Fall, Kristy Walker 8 th grade: There will be an 8th grade fundraiser at Chipotle on Monday, November 11, 5-8pm. If you tell the cashier you are there to support DMMS, we receive 50% of the profits. This was a big success for us last year and we would love your participation again. All money raised goes directly toward 8th grade. Thank you for your continued support of Daniel Morgan Middle School and the Parent-Teacher Organization. We will have a Walk of Fame if you donate, you may place a star in the hall with your name or in honor of someone. Visit and help us reach our goal of $6,000. With our profits, we will purchase books and other materials for our English classrooms!

4 P ag e 4 Athletics Daniel Morgan fall sports have officially ended. Congratulations to the Boys Cross Country Team for their 1st place finish at the NVJL Championship. Also, congratulations to our Girls Cross Country Team for the 2nd place finish at the NVJL Championship. We d also like to recognize John Delaney for being the top individual runner in the league. The 7th and 8th Grade Girls Basketball Teams also finished up and showed a lot of growth over the season. The Boys Basketball, Winter Cheerleading and Wrestling seasons have started. Their first competition will take place November 14, Our next sport will be Girls Volleyball, which will begin Late January/Early February. Please stay tuned for more details! PTO is donating 25% to grade levels for field trips. Wrote notes of appreciation to our cafeteria staff Worked concessions for Girls Basketball and Cross County Promoted, signed up to help and sold Pancake Day tickets Started In the News banner which has photos of WPS people who ve been in the news! 10 members of the Handley Key Club attended our meeting and helped with activities. Items appropriate for our students will be placed in the clothes closet; other items will be donated to CCAP. While cleaning out your closets, think of sharing items to individuals who are in need of winter warmth. Part 2:NEW ITEMS we are collecting new gloves,hats and scarves which will be gifted to needy students. Drop off boxes will be located in the 5/6 lobby and in the 7/8 office. Mrs. Miranda S. 5 P ag e 5 DMMS Angel Fund Dear parents, teachers and community members, As our school community continues to struggle with the problem of children living in poverty, I am once again asking for your help. The Daniel Morgan Middle School PTO Angel Fund Committee is still committed to assisting the teachers and staff in providing some basic necessities to our students in the most need. As you may know, this committee was formed in 2011 to support the already existing Angel Fund that teachers contributed to throughout the year to help their students. By working together, teachers, staff, parents and community members have made a difference in the lives of our Daniel Morgan children. Last year, with the help of your generous donations, we were able to provide 100 families over the Christmas break and 25 families over spring break with fresh and nutritious food and warm blankets. We have also stocked the nurse's office with a small assortment of dry goods which can be sent home with homeless students on weekends when needed. In an effort to encourage these students to focus on their education and help to ensure a more successful future, we also began a mentor program last year. We matched students with some wonderful community members who have committed to meet regularly with their students to encourage, support and guide them as they learn and grow. Our hope is that we can continue and expand this program each year. As the cold weather approaches and we look forward to the holidays, many of our students will again be faced with hunger and no heat over our two week break. We have the opportunity to make a difference. Please consider making a donation by December 11, 2013 to support these efforts and forward this to anyone else who may be inclined to do the same. En Pre-Algebra han de resolver y graficar desigualdades y trabajar en funciones y relaciones. Nuestro departamento de Educación Cívica se está centrando en la enseñanza de los fundamentos de la economía y las características de la economía de EE.UU. En cuanto a deportes, el invierno traerá el inicio del baloncesto de varones, lucha libre y cheerleading. 9 P ag e 9 DMMS Angel Fund Estimados padres de familia, maestros y miembros de la comunidad, A medida que nuestra comunidad escolar continúa luchando con el problema de los niños que viven en la pobreza, estoy una vez más pidiendo su ayuda. El Comité del PTO de Daniel Morgan Middle School Angel Fund sigue comprometido a ayudar a los maestros y al personal en la prestación de algunos artículos de primera necesidad a nuestros estudiantes más necesitados. Como ustedes saben, este comité se formó en 2011 para apoyar el Fondo ya existente al que los profesores han contribuido a lo largo del año para ayudar a sus estudiantes. Al trabajar juntos, los profesores, personal, padres y miembros de la comunidad han hecho una diferencia en las vidas de nuestros hijos en Daniel Morgan. Nuestra esperanza es que podamos continuar y ampliar este programa cada año.
