1 UCV US PROGRAM STEM CELLS: ORIGIN AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Credits: 3 semester / 4.5 quarter hours Course Meeting times: TBA Professor: Elisa Oltra, PhD. elisa.oltra@ucv.es OBJETIVOS (GENERAL OBJECTIVES) El objetivo general del curso es proporcionar al alumno una idea general de los pilares de la actual Medicina Regenerativa mediante la lectura crítica de textos de originales en el campo de la biología regenerativa y su discusión en grupo; visitas guiadas a centros de investigación en células madre y al Banco de Progenitores hematopoyéticos del Hospital La Fe ; finalizando con una revisión de los ensayos clínicos realizados con células madre o actualmente en curso. The main goal is to expose students to the pillars of the actual Regenerative Medicine by engaging them with scientific manuscript critical reading in the field of stem cell biology; by taking them to guided visits to Stem Cell Research Centers and to the Stem Cell Progenitor Bank at the local Hospital La Fe ; and by reviewing with them Stem Cell Clinical Trials performed and in course. Class description:.the students will review original scientific papers that will be discussed in class in the form of Journal Clubs. Examples of particular health problems approached by Stem cell biology will be assigned for group workshops presentations using problem-based learning methodology.

Visits to Stem cell Centers REQUISITOS PREVIOS (PREREQUISITES) Basic knowledge of biology METODOLOGÍA (METHODOLOGY) The class will be organized on the basis of teacher presentation of contents which will include clinical correlations. Critical reading of manuscripts will be required, both individually and in small group work sessions supervised by the professor. The students will present Journal clubs for each Didactic Unit and will participate in smallgroup problem-based learning workshops. Active participation and attendance are essential and will play an active role in the final grade. Para el aprendizaje de los contenidos se combinarán las explicaciones teóricas del profesor que incluirán casos clínicos y lectura crítica de artículos científicos tanto individualmente como en grupos de trabajo reducidos tutorizados por el profesor, dado el carácter teórico-práctico de los contenidos de la materia. Los alumnos realizarán presentaciones orales en modo Journal club con los contenidos de cada Unidad Didáctica. Se valorará la capacidad reflexiva del alumno, su implicación y participación en la clase y el interés depositado en las actividades propuestas. Se aplicará la metodología del aprendizaje basado en problemas.

3 MATERIALES (MATERIALS) 1. Material principal: Class package 2. Materiales complementarios: Original scientific manuscripts ASISTENCIA (ATTENDANCE). Las clases están organizadas de forma que es necesario mantenerse al día con el material suministrado, así como completar los ejercicios y asistir a clase todos los días. This class is intensive; therefore it is necessary to keep up with the material, complete the exercises (there will be quite a bit of homework) and attend class daily. Sólo se permiten 2 ausencias. Después de la 2ª ausencia se restará medio punto de la nota final por cada una adicional (-0,5). Sólo se considerará como algo excepcional una ausencia en caso de hospitalización y/ o emergencia que requiera viaje urgente a EEUU. No professor can decide whether an absence is excused or not. In case of emergency, students need to contact the Program Director s to make sure their absences may be justified. You are allowed up two absences, use them wisely. Any absence beyond that will lower your final grade in 0,5 points (out of a grand total of 10 points) for each absence beyond the second one (exceptions will only be granted in case of hospitalization or when the student is required to go back to the States). So, please, use them wisely. Do not assume you will never get sick or will never miss your flight back. PUNTUALIDAD. (PUNCTUALITY) El alumno deberá llegar puntual a clase. Students must be on time.

4 ENTREGA DE TRABAJOS (TURNING IN PAPERS & COMPOSITIONS). All must follow the MLA Style Manual: Según las normas UCV-US PROGRAM, no entregar el trabajo en la fecha y hora indicadas supone un punto (sobre 10) de penalización por día. Entregarlo después de las 5 pm del día indicado, 1 punto, después de las 5 pm del día siguiente, 2 puntos, y entregarlo después de las 5 pm del siguiente día (72 horas después de lo establecido) = nota 0, aunque se le corrija el ensayo al estudiante. * Es responsabilidad únicamente del estudiante el asegurarse que el profesor ha recibido y puede abrir su documento adjunto (attachment) en formato Word.doc. Si por cualquier motivo el profesor no puede abrir el documento o no lo recibe, es responsabilidad del estudiante el asegurarse, NO del profesor. De otra manera la nota será 0, cero. *Plagio (plagiarism): el plagio esta prohibido y censurado. Cualquier trabajo plagiado recibirá nota de 0, cero.
