ATTENDENCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION The University of Alabama at Birmingham recognizes that the academic success of individual students is related to their class attendance and participation. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures complies with the official UAB Attendance and Excused Absence Policy for Undergraduate Programs and therefore allows, with anticipated proper official documentation, absences due to jury or military duty as well as absences due to participation in specific university-sponsored activities. In addition, the Department has its own Attendance Policy. Regular attendance is necessary to learn a foreign language. Repeated absences, tardiness, passivity, and silence will definitely be reflected in your course grade. For semesterlength classes*, the Attendance Policy of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is: Class participation, contribution and actual speaking in the target language is crucial in order to learn a language, therefore class attendance is mandatory. Any absence is going to affect students class participation and final grade. If, under special circumstances, students need to miss classes, the following attendance policy will be applied: 2-days a week classes: 2 % from the FINAL grade is deducted for EACH absence above 3. More than 7 absences will result in an AUTOMATIC F. Example for 2-day classes:final grade = 90 6 absences (3 above maximum permitted) = 90-6 = 84% final grade 8 absences = F XIX. UAB EARLY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS) EAS is designed to help students to succeed academically at UAB. If you receive an with EAS in the title, please open it, read it and take advantage of the support that UAB offers to all students. SKYPE PROGRAM On the dates indicated on the syllabus, class will be held in the FLMS (Laboratorio de Idiomas). Class will consist of three parts: 30 minutes in Spanish with Mexican partners,

6 Spanish 210 UAB Maddox Fall minutes in English with Mexican partners, and 15 minutes of reflection with your classmates. If you have a laptop, please install Skype ( and bring it on Skype days. While the FLMS has computers, band width is limited, so some students will have to use personal laptops. Most will have to be paired with classmates due to the limited number of Mexican partners. XXI. EXÁMENES Two tests will cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You will record the oral section using the free Audacity download. Follow these steps: 1. Go to sourceforge.net and download the recording program Audacity. It works like a tape recorder. 2. Read the questions in the attached document aloud and answer them as you record yourself. 3. Press stop. Click "file." Click "export." When prompted save the file not as a WAV (big file) but as an MP3 (little file) under your own name. 4. Attach the MP3 file to an and send it to the professor: jtmaddox@uab.edu. XXII. PONENCIAS Students will work with class partners to research aspects of Hispanic cultures. They then upload Prezis or PowerPoints to the course Canvas page. During class, students will each speak for an equal amount of time on the topic. One student will be in charge of writing the outline (not an essay to be read), and the other will be in charge of creating the technological components of the presentation. The outline should include: Introduction, four main points (two per person), conclusion. No presentation slide should include more than two sentences of information. There should be a maximum of seven slides (one per main point plus Works Cited) and a maximum of six images. Time limit: 8 minutes per group. For MLA Bibliography format, see: For Prezi, see: XXIII. EVENTOS CULTURALES Cultural events. Students must attend at least three cultural events. Students can gain extra practice and cultural learning by participating in the cultural activities. There are many campus, community and department events that are appropriate for this component. Your instructor will give instructions for documenting and receiving credit for event participation. Below are a number of activities sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for which students can gain cultural credit: Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month: 15 September to 15 October. UAB will sponsor campuswide events. Palomitas Spanish and Latin American Film Club: Sponsors international film screenings 4-5 times per semester, usually on Wednesday afternoons. See Prof. Maddox for details. Conversation table (La Tertulia): Most Wednesdays 2:00-3:00, Campus Starbuck s, Prof. María Jesus Centeno Lectures and presentations: The Department typically sponsors visiting scholars or cultural events during the semester.

7 Spanish 210 UAB Maddox Fall Conversation Partners: You can sign up to be a UAB international student conversation partner. Peer Tutor: Prof. Maddox may ask you to help peers at a lower level for culture credit. XXIV. REFLEXIONES DE TELETANDEM By the class following Teletandem conversation hours with Mexico, students will type one half page in MLA Format (12pt TNR, Double Space), in Spanish, regarding their conversations. The theme will vary each week (Language, Sports, Food, Current events), but the central questions will remain the same: What did you learn about the Spanish language?, What did you learn about Mexican culture/s?, What more do you want to know regarding this conversation? XXV. TAREA Y PREPARACIÓN There is homework for every class and it is due during the next class. Read the chapter before each class. Participation grades are based on quantity and quality of Spanish used in class, tardiness/attendance, completion of tasks (homework/classwork), and coming to office hours if help is needed. Come to class on time, Speak in Spanish, and communicate with the professor about your needs to improve or maintain this grade. XXVI. FECHAS LÍMITES Make-up work will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and the teacher does not have to accept any late work. If the student arranges an absence/tardy or provides written and verbally approved evidence of a valid reason to miss class (personal illness or family crisis, for example), s/he may complete the missed work for full credit. If a student does not turn in a classwork assignment after an unexcused absence/tardy, s/he can make it up within one week for a ten-point penalty. If the student turns in the work by 4 December, s/he may receive a grade of up to 70, depending on the reason for the missing work. XXVII.
