1 Course Overview: Benefits for Students: SPAN SPANISH CONVERSATION through Film J-Term 2015 Jan 5 Jan 14, 2015 Hours of class: 9:00 am to noon, and 1:00-4:00 pm Plano Campus, SMU Prof. Olga Colbert Phone: Office hours: by appointment - olvalero@smu.edu - Fulfill the Oral Proficiency requirement for the University Curriculum (UC) - Complete a Major or Minor in Spanish in a timely manner (or early) Instructor Biography: Olga López-Valero Colbert is Associate Professor of Spanish and recipient of the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Award. She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University and joined the SMU faculty in Her book, The Gaze on the Past: Popular Culture and History in Antonio Muñoz Molina s Novels, was published by Bucknell University Press in The range of her research stretches chronologically from the Generation of 1898 and the exile from Spain s Civil War, to the literature of the Transition to democracy and the 1990s. Her work has appeared in journals such as España Contemporánea, Romance Language Notes, Ojáncano, and Revista Hispánica Moderna. Pullins Co Important Note: students must watch the 5 films outside of class, prior to our discussion. Student Learning Outcomes After taking this course: Students will improve their oral communication in Spanish in terms of accuracy and fluency
2 They will improve their vocabulary in Spanish They will be able to describe, narrate and use persuasive arguments in Spanish with greater accuracy and fluency They will be able to select, organize and use appropriate evidence or information to suit a specific or targeted audience They will be able to use appropriate visual cues to deliver a presentation to a specific audience They will acquire some basic notions of film analysis They will become familiar with several important films from Spain and Latin America Grade: The final grade for the course will be based on the following: -Oral presentations (20%) -Short quizzes (vocabulary) (15%) -Homework (15 %) -Group creative Activity (15%) -Participation in class discussion and attendance (20%) -Final Exam (15%) Quizzes: Mostly unannounced, at the beginning of class. Please, be punctual. If a student is late and misses the quiz, a grade of 0 will be assigned. Attendance is extremely important. As permitted by University policy, I reserve the right to drop students who miss more than one class (6 hours of instruction). Oral Presentation: Each student will give at least one oral presentation to the class on a topic assigned by the instructor. Creative Activity: students will create an activity inspired by one of the readings. It can be a song, a poem, a movie trailer, a mixed media art piece, a dance, a painting, etc. Participation. Your active participation is expected, both individually and in groupwork. Accommodations for students with disabilities: Students needing academic accommodations for a disability must first contact Ms. Rebecca Marin, Coordinator, Services for Students with Disabilities ( ) to verify the disability and establish eligibility for accommodations. Then you should schedule an appointment with Prof. Colbert to make appropriate arrangements. (See University Policy No. 2.4.) Religious Observance: Religiously observant students wishing to be absent on holidays that require missing class should notify their professors in writing at the beginning of the semester, and should discuss with them, in advance, acceptable ways of making up any work missed because of the absence. (See University Policy No. 1.9.)
