1 Delaware Community School Giglio s Journal Delaware Community friends and families, City School District of Albany Volume 2, Issue 1 September 2010 I trust your summer has been enjoyable and you are as excited as I am for the return of school. We have been busy working on programming; Literacy Links, Character Education, as well as a dynamic new reading program called, Reader s Inc.-Delaware Reads 1001 Books. The goal of our Reader s Inc. Program is to focus on our children enjoying and sharing books and stories with you at home. We will have 100 bags hanging in our main hallway, with 10 books per bag. Your child will have a Reader s Inc. Progress Sheet containing 100 squares. As you and your child digest each bag, a square gets filled on the sheet. We will have celebrations at Morning Program for milestones such as 25, 50, 75 bags read. When you and your child complete all 100 bags, we will have a big celebration with the last book purchased as a gift for our dedicated reader! There will be more information to follow, including a power-point/packet illustrating the details of Reader s Inc.-Delaware Reads 1001 Books. We are in need of quality children s books to complete our collection. If you are interested in helping fill our bags, please contact Leanne Iorio liorio@albany.k12.ny.us to join the team. Let's work hard together to make this a happy, productive year! Ms. Schiavoni Bienvenidos a esta nueva etapa en el proceso educacional de su hijo(a). Mi nombre es Djemila Marie Stevens (Torres) y durante los últimos 10 años he ejercido como maestra en el distrito escolar de Albany. Me alegra informarles que durante el próximo curso escolar seré la maestra de español como segundo idioma. La educación académica y social de su hijo(a) es muy importante para mi. Como maestra, tengo altas aspiraciones para mis estudiantes y sus familias. Mi filosofía es una de puerta abierta y acepto cualquier oportunidad para poder comunicarme con las familias de mis estudiantes. Creo firmemente que una comunicación constante y abierta entre la escuela y el hogar beneficia mucho a los estudiantes. I am very excited to be the new Spanish as a Second Language teacher at DCS. Your child s academic and social development is very important to me. I have high expectations of my students and their families. I have an open-door policy and welcome any opportunity to communicate with the families of my students. I firmly believe that consistent and honest communication between school and home is highly beneficial to all students. 4 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 4 Friendship Garden/Jardín de la Amistad Global Garden /Jardín Internacional As you may have noticed we have a new garden developing near the office. We would like this garden to represent the different cultural heritages of our community. If you know the plants that are grown in the countries that represent your heritage or are able to find out what plants are grown in Burma, Africa, Ireland, Italy, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, please forward the information to Susan Fowler or Leanne Iorio! Gracias a todos los que pintaron! Penny Harvest Start checking under the couch cushions and between the car seats, Penny Harvest Collections are starting soon! Help support local charities and organizations in the Delaware Community just by donating loose pennies! Mrs. Spilman and Ms. Iorio will be giving each classroom a plastic jug to collect the pennies in. The jugs will mark off classroom collection milestones. Watch each class race in the Piggy Bank Dash to show penny progress!

5 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 5 Capital Region Latino Day Parade Hi Everyone, I hope you have had a fabuloso verano but now we have to get onto the business of fun school activities! On September 18th is the Capital Region Latino Day parade. The Dual Language students have participated the last three years and we are getting ready to do it again. I would like to know who would be interested in participating. A parent or guardian must accompany all students. I have to submit the list of anyone marching. Please contact us at our school ; cmilitello@albany.k12.ny.us or abandwemple@albany.k12.ny.us as soon as possible. The parade will start at 2:00 at Washington Park please meet us at the Lake House by 1:30. We ll have lots of fun and have an opportunity to bond outside of school! Dad s Bring Your Child to School Day On Tuesday, September 21, Delaware Community School will be participating in the Capital Region Dads Take Your Child to School Day. 6 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 6 Readers Inc. Arriving Soon at DCS! Delaware Reads 1001 books! GOALS: A Parent/Child reading initiative in which students in grade Pre-K to Second will have the opportunity to read 1,001 books! HOW IT WORKS: 100 bags, 1000 books: Pre-K - Second graders can sign out a bag that contains 10 books to read every 2 weeks. The sign out stand and instructions are located at the Sign-Out Station outside the Main Office - right across from the 100 Bag Rack! WHERE TO FIND IT: In the main hallway on the first floor. Right across from the main office! BOOK DONATIONS: Please leave book donations in the box in the main office. School Banking/La Banca de la Escuela Delaware Community School is proud to participate in First Niagara's School Banking program. Through this worthwhile and fun program, students and their parent or guardian can open a bank account with First Niagara Bank and make deposits at school. The program encourages frequency of deposits rather than amounts while teaching children about money and the value of saving. Volunteers are needed to staff the school banking desk which is open in the main office on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 10:00. Volunteers, who work in teams of two, accept the students' deposits, enter them into the computer, and bring the deposit to the nearbybank. Volunteering for school banking is a great way to get involved as it is only 30 minutes and need not be every Friday. If you are interested in volunteering for School Banking or want to learn more about opening a school bank account for you or your child, please contact Samantha Shipherd, PTA Parent Volunteer at or, shersam6@yahoo.com La escuela Delaware Community está orgullosa de participar en el programa de la escuela bancaria del First Niagara. A través de este programa que vale la pena y es divertido, los estudiantes y sus padres o apoderados pueden abrir una cuenta bancaria con First Niagara Bank y hacer depósitos en la escuela. El programa alienta la frecuencia de depósitos, más que la cantidad que se deposita mientras enseña a los niños/as sobre el dinero y el valor de ahorrar. 7 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 7 School Bus Application Schedule Please submit completed bus applications to the main office. Any applications received by Delaware Community School on or before August 16 will result in transportation beginning on September 7. The schedule below will be used for any applications received by DCS after August 16 th. Application Received By Transportation will Begin: August 20 th September 7th August 23 rd - September 3 rd September 13 th September 7 - September 10th September 20 th September 13 th - September 17 th September 27 th September 20 th - September 24 th October 4 th September 27 th - October 1 st October 12 th Por favor de presentar las aplicaciones completadas a la oficina principal de autobús. 8 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 8 Albany Public Library Service to Children Policy The Albany Public Library welcomes and encourages children to visit the Library, to use Library resources and services, and to attend Library programs. Library staff members are available to help and support children and to make their library experience a rewarding and positive one. Unattended Children The Library does not provide care or supervision of children, except to the extent needed to uphold Library rules of conduct and use. The Library does not accept responsibility for care or supervision of children who are not accompanied by an adult or designated caregiver. The Library is not able to provide short- or long-term childcare and is not a substitute for supervised after-school or daycare programs. Parents or designated caregivers are solely responsible for their children's supervision and behavior while using the Library. The Albany Public Library has developed the following guidelines for the safety and protection of children using the Library: Children Age 10 or younger must be accompanied by an adult or responsible adolescent (age 14 and older). The designated caregiver must stay with children at all times. If children are participating in a storytime or other Library program, the designated caregiver must remain on Library premises and be in visual and/or voice contact with the children. If a child age 10 or under is found to be unattended in the library they may be allowed to use the library phone to contact their parent or guardian to arrange to be picked up. If contact with a parent or guardian cannot be made, Library staff will contact the Albany Police Department. In cases where children age 10 or younger are left unattended in the Library on more than one occasion, library staff may refer the matter to the Albany Police Department or other appropriate social service authorities. Children Age 11 or older are welcome to use the Library without a parent or guardian. All Library users must adhere to the Library s Customer Behavior Policy. Parents are advised that if their child misbehaves, the child may be asked to leave the Library and the Library premises. Parents must realize that, even when not present, they are legally responsible for their child's behavior Truancy In consideration of the many home-schooled children and those who attend alternative education programs, the Library cannot monitor the status of all school-aged children using the Library throughout its hours of operation. If there is a suspected case of truancy, the Library staff will make every effort to determine whether the child has a legitimate reason to be out of school. The Library staff will contact the appropriate authorities to deal with a suspected truant. Children and Use of Library Resources Albany Public Library offers materials that reflect the diversity of its user population. It is not the responsibility of the Library or its staff to exercise a supervisory or restrictive role in determining which Library resources young people may use or access. It is the responsibility of a child s parents and/or designated caregiver to monitor the child s selection and use of all Library resources. This includes the monitoring of the child's access to the Internet. The Library encourages parents to set their own family rules, in consultation with their child, regarding use of Library resources and services. Library users may consult the Library s youth services and reference staff for information regarding developing such family rules. Approved by the Board of Trustees 7/17/06

As always the PTA will be budgeting monies for each class, we urge each teacher to utilize these monies for the enrichment of your class.
