Document A Mi perro, mi gato y yo A B C D E Para muchos, el miau es expresión de dignidad e independencia, mientras que el guau no es sino un vehículo de servilismo. Al elegir un animal u otro revelamos algo de nosotros mismos; si esta elección es acertada, puede dar lugar a verdaderas historias de amor correspondido. Una mascota no es un elemento decorativo, recuerda Miguel Ibáñez, profesor de Etología de la Facultad de Veterinaria de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Tampoco es un juguete para malcriarlo. Es un ser vivo con necesidades, que entra a formar parte de un grupo y al que hay que educar sin tonterías. Para eso conviene conocer las particularidades de cada animal. El perro tiene un sistema de jerarquía lineal; es una especie social que necesita una familia que lo cuide. El gato es territorial, solitario, limpio, y tiende a evitar el contacto con los desconocidos. Así lo señala el veterinario especialista en comportamiento animal Claudio Gerzovich. Las mayores diferencias se dan en el comportamiento social; y es allí donde aparecen los problemas más graves. Ibáñez pone ejemplos de errores: cuando dos perros habitan una casa, uno será el dominante; si el humano no respeta la jerarquía, poniéndose de parte del débil, surgirán problemas. El mayor riesgo en los gatos, continúa diciendo este experto, es tener más de uno: el gato necesita su ambiente y, para ser un buen compañero social, es mejor que esté solo. En España existen cuatro millones de perros y tres millones de gatos. Según constata la Fundación Purina, todos los meses se quedan en la calle entre un 6% y un 10% del total de animales. Una buena elección es el mejor antídoto contra el abandono y los conflictos domésticos. Hay parejas que han roto por culpa de la mascota, afirma Ibáñez, quien hace una sola recomendación: buscar el asesoramiento de un especialista antes de hacer la adquisición Adaptado de Elena Sevillano CONTINUED

Los madrugadores se rigen por los ritmos circadianos: dormir cuando hay oscuridad y ponerse en acción con la luz del sol. Cualquier cambio de horario puede alterarles el sueño con mucha facilidad. Cuando no conseguimos dormir bien, tenemos que recurrir a fármacos específicos que en su mayoría crean dependencia. La cosmética aromática, los masajes y algunas nuevas terapias alternativas pueden ser el empujoncito que estábamos necesitando para conseguir un relax profundo. Con el descanso la circulación fluirá sin problemas, los hombros se descargarán de tensiones y podremos estirarnos libremente. Los fines de semana, cuando no haya prisas ni despertador, dormir será un gran lujo y constituirá todo un tratamiento de belleza. El sueño de calidad proporciona una regeneración total que produce beneficios visibles en la piel, el cabello y los músculos. Mejora notablemente la circulación y nos pone de buen humor. Si es capaz de recuperar la vieja costumbre de la siesta, hará un descubrimiento que contribuirá a elevar su calidad de vida, aunque ya se hayan terminado las vacaciones. Si el estrés acumulado es considerable, podemos empezar por dormir el doble de lo que tenemos acostumbrado. Deberemos también cambiar de forma progresiva algunos hábitos que generan ansiedad. Lo primero es anular estimulantes como el tabaco, alcohol, café, picante, etcétera.
