Activate or Build Background Have children close their eyes: Es de noche. Estás afuera con tu familia. Miras al cielo. Preview and Predict Browse through the book with children. Point out that the book contains both photographs and diagrams to give information about the stars. Nonfiction Text Features Star diagrams: Turn to page 3. Explain that diagrams are illustrations that explain or describe something. A diagram may contain extra information about a picture so that a reader can better understand the image. Tell children that the star diagrams show pictures people think stars form. Introduce Vocabulary You may want to introduce the following words before reading: : objetos en el cielo que alumbran figuras: la forma exterior de los objetos Photographs: Turn to pages 4 5. Point out that the photograph on page 4 shows a group of stars. Tell children that lines have been added to the photograph to connect the stars and show what picture they form. Then point out the constellation star diagram on page 5. Explain that this diagram shows what shape some people think they see in the photograph on page 4. Tell children that by placing the diagram next to the photograph, the author shows the reader what star pictures are.

Point to and trace the outline of several shapes in the diagram: These lines show shapes of people and animals. Point to the stars that form one of the shapes. Explain that people imagine the stars form shapes of people, animals, and things. Begin the lesson by connecting the English word shape to the corresponding word in the children s native languages. Reread the Book After you reread the text to children, use the graphic organizer on the back cover to discuss the main idea and details of Figuras de. You may want to have children draw in and label each box. Then return to pages 2 3, and point out how the text begins. Qué información te dice la autora? Explain that the author gives you something to think about when you look at the stars in the night sky. Answers to Student Book Questions 1. 3. Las respuestas variarán.
5 3 Learn Through the Text SCIENCE: The Night Sky Use Figuras de to reinforce children s understanding of the nighttime sky. Display pictures of the night sky and initiate a discussion about it. Point out that some of the things in the night sky are part of nature, while others are made by humans. Have children make a chart with two columns, one labeled Viene de la naturaleza and the other labeled Hecho por seres humanos. In the Viene de la naturaleza column, have children draw and label pictures of things in the night sky that come from nature. In the Hecho por seres humanos column, have them draw and label pictures of things in the night sky that people have made. Collect the charts, and display them on a classroom wall or bulletin board. COMPREHENSION: Use Picture Clues Explain that pictures can give clues about what the words on a page say. Tell children that good readers look closely at pictures to help them better understand the words. Have children turn to page 5. Read the sentence on the page aloud. Era correcta la pista de la ilustración? Point out the word bear and continue with the think-aloud: Qué pasa si llego a esta palabra y no sé lo que es? Turn to page 7, and have children demonstrate how they would use the picture to read and interpret the text. WRITING Write an Informational Text Have children use what they learned about informational texts to write a class book about another object in the sky. Begin by helping children to brainstorm objects in the sky, such as the Moon, the Sun, clouds, and rainbows. Have children decide on the topic they want to write about. Provide simple illustrated books about the chosen topic. Read the books aloud to children. Then have children work in small groups to illustrate and label one fact they learned about the topic. Collect the groups drawings. Have each group dictate a sentence about its picture and record it on the drawing. Remind children that Figuras de ended with a question. Turn to page 8 in the book and read it aloud. Ask the groups to suggest a closing question for the class book. Number the pages, and have children create a cover. Bind the pages together, and place the book in the classroom library.
