2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Informational Text Display the book cover and read aloud the title and the author s name. Explain that informational text is often written to show how something happens. In this book, the author shows how several things change over time. Mention that the author uses headings, photographs, and text to present the information. Activate or Build Background Have children think about what they were like when they were babies. Ask them to describe what babies are like and what they can and cannot do. Record their ideas in the first column of a two-column chart like the one below. Then ask children what they are like now and what they can do. Record their ideas in the second column of the chart. Use the chart as a basis for discussion about how children have changed over time. Nonfiction Text Features Headings: Turn to pages 2 and 3. Point to and read the heading on each page. Explain that these headings tell the reader when the photographs were taken. The heading Antes tells you that the photograph shows London long ago; the heading Ahora tells you that the photograph shows London today. Page numbers: Point out the page numbers at the bottom of pages 2 and 3. Explain to children that page numbers make it easier for readers to find a specific piece of information. If you know that information on London is on pages 2 and 3, you don t need to search through the book to find what you re looking for; instead, you can simply turn to those pages to find the information you need. Picture sequence: Turn to page 8. Explain that the set of smaller photographs is a picture sequence. Tell children that each photograph shows a step in the building of the play area tower. Point out that the photographs are arranged in the order in which the events occurred. Have volunteers describe what is happening in each photograph. Introduce Vocabulary You may want to introduce the following words before reading: antes: en aquel tiempo ahora: en este tiempo hace mucho tiempo: en un tiempo lejano en el pasado

Display the calendar and point to today s date. Say, This is today. Today is [name of day]. Tell children that something that happens today is happening now. Continue using the calendar to explain the words yesterday, last week, last month, and last year. Tell children that something that happened yesterday, last week, last month, or last year happened in the past, or then. Reread the Book After children reread the text, help them summarize the book by completing the graphic organizer on the back cover with them. 5 3 Learn Through the Text SOCIAL STUDIES: Changes Use Antes y ahora to reinforce children s understanding of how things change over time. Remind children that they read about how things change. Tell children that technology has helped change the way people do things. Turn to pages 2 and 3. Point to the photograph on page 2 as you explain that long ago people used horses and wagons to get around. Point to the photograph on page 3. Qué usa la gente ahora? On chart paper, create a two-column chart similar to the one shown below. Fill in sentences that tell what things people did long ago. Read the sentences aloud. Ask children to tell what people do now. Write their responses in the chart. COMPREHENSION: Compare and Contrast Tell children that thinking about how things are alike and different helps readers organize information and understand an author s ideas. Turn to pages 12 and 13. WRITING Write an Informational Text Have children use what they have learned about informational text to write a class book about how things change over time. Brainstorm topics with children, reminding them to think about things that change over time (such as trees, kittens, and puppies). Distribute drawing paper and have children fold the paper in half. Tell them to write the heading Antes on the top left side and the heading Ahora on the top right side. Tell children to choose a topic and draw how it looked then on the left side of the paper and how it looks now on the right side of the paper. Have children use sentence frames based on the text pattern in the book to write about their topic. Remind them to begin their sentences with a time-related word. Work with volunteers to create a book cover. Bind the pages together, and place the book near the classroom calendar for children to refer to during the year.
