2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Informational Text Display the book cover. Read aloud the title and the author s name. Explain that this book gives information about how leaves on different kinds of trees are different. Activate or Build Background If possible, gather several different kinds of tree leaves. Display one leaf. Ask children to tell what it is and where it grows. Point out that when you talk about one leaf, you use the word hoja. Then display several leaves, and remind children that for many Spanish words, to form the plural you simply add an s to the end of the word. Therefore, when you talk about more than one leaf, you use the word hojas. Lead a discussion about the characteristics of one leaf by asking questions such as De qué color es esta hoja? Qué tamaño tiene? Qué forma tiene? Follow the same procedure with the remaining leaves, guiding children to focus on the appearance of the leaves. Nonfiction Text Features Labels: Turn to page 3. As you point to each photograph, read the label. Explain that each label names the kind of tree the leaf grows on. Point out that the label is positioned below the photograph of the tree it names. That makes it easy to match the label to the correct photograph. Page numbers: Point out the page numbers at the bottom of pages 2 and 3. Tell children that these numbers make it easier to find a specific item in the book. Introduce Vocabulary You may want to introduce the following words before reading: diferentes: que no se parecen a otros muchos: un gran número de algo tipos: grupos de cosas que son iguales Preview and Predict Display the book cover, and reread the title. Examine pages 2 and 3 with children. Point out the small photographs of individual leaves and the larger photographs showing trees.
Predict pages 2 3 Vocabulary diferentes 2p Read the main text and labels on pages 2 and 3. Help children track the text on the two pages. Activate Prior Knowledge Point out the label below each leaf. Qué crees que son estas palabras? Qué información nos dan?
4 pages 6 7 Read aloud the main text, tracking the print as you read. Identify Text Organization and Structure Point out the page numbers at the bottoms of the pages. ESL/ELL Strategy In advance, cut several sets of leaves out of construction paper. On chart paper, draw a tree trunk, branches, and leaves. Point to the tree. Say, This is a tree. Have children repeat the word tree. Point to the leaves on the chart paper drawing. Say, Leaves grow on trees. Have children repeat the sentence. Ask, What grows on trees? Display the construction paper leaves. These are leaves. Leaves grow on trees. Invite volunteers to attach the leaves to the tree on the chart paper and repeat the sentence, Leaves grow on trees. Reread the Book After rereading the text aloud, complete the graphic organizer on the back cover with children to help them summarize what they learned about leaves. Discuss how leaves are alike and how they are different. Have each child page through the book and pick out two leaves to compare and contrast. Remind children that the author wrote this book to give information about trees and leaves. Answers to Student Book Questions 1. 3. Las respuestas variarán.
5 3 Learn Through the Text SCIENCE: Plant Parts Use Árboles y hojas to reinforce children s understanding of the parts of a plant and how they are different. Bring in a flowering plant or use a classroom plant for discussion. Point out the different parts of the plant. Have children name the stem, leaves, and flowers. Explain that the roots of the plant are down in the soil. If possible, uncover some of the roots to show the class. Have children describe the leaves on the plant. Cómo son las hojas? Son grandes o pequeñas? De qué color son las hojas? Then repeat this procedure with the flowers and stem of the plant. Explain to children that a tree is a kind of plant. Draw a tree on the chalkboard, including the trunk, branches, leaves, and roots. Ask children to identify the different parts of the tree. Add the labels to the drawing. Distribute drawing paper, and tell children to draw a plant found in their home or yard. Have them label all the parts of the plant. To extend their learning, have them collect real leaves to add to their drawings. COMPREHENSION: Draw Conclusions Tell children that sometimes readers have to use clues in the text to make decisions about information in a book. Use a think-aloud to model how to draw a conclusion. Then have children turn to page 2. Help them draw another conclusion about leaves and trees. WRITING Write an Informational Text Have children use what they have learned about informational text to write a class book about another part of trees, such as flowers, fruit, or nuts. Choose a topic with the class. On a sheet of chart paper, write an introductory sentence: Diferentes árboles tienen diferentes. Work with children to list examples related to the topic, using books and the Internet or, if possible, an expert in the topic (a local nursery owner or gardener, for example). You may want to use a graphic organizer like the one on the back cover to organize the information. On individual sheets of chart paper, write these sentences: [Nombre de la parte del árbol] tienen diferentes tamaños. Distribute the sheets of paper to small groups. Have them illustrate the sentences, using information that was gathered earlier. You can write a conclusion such as the one in Árboles y hojas: Hay muchos tipos diferentes de árboles y [nombre de la parte del árbol]. Assemble the pages of the book. Create a cover, and bind the pages together. Read the book aloud with the class. Save the book to use during a school Arbor Day or Earth Day celebration.
