2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Informational Text Display the book cover. Reread the title and the author s name. Explain that this book gives information about what it takes to make things move. Tell children that the author uses questions and answers to present the information. Qué tiene de interesante el título de este libro? Por qué leerías este libro? Activate or Build Background Explain that people often use different objects to get from one place to another. Discuss with children the objects that help them travel to school (autobús, auto, or bicicleta). Then ask them to think of other ways people get from one place to another. You may want to record children s responses on the chalkboard in a word web like the one below. auto autobús tren Maneras en que se mueve la gente bicicleta avión tren subterráneo Nonfiction Text Features Heading: Read aloud the heading on page 2, tracking the print as you read. Explain that this is the heading of the chart and that it tells what information the chart contains. Labels: Point to and read the labels on page 2. Have children name each picture and confirm that the labels identify the objects. Picture chart: Explain that the picture chart on page 2 shows a lot of information in a small space. Tell children that the photographs and labels are set up in rows so the information is easy to read. Show children how to track the information by tracing each row with your finger. Introduce Vocabulary You may want to introduce the following words before reading: qué: una palabra que se usa para preguntar sobre cosas mover: cambiar de lugar o posición cosas: objetos Preview and Predict Page through the book, drawing children s attention to the photographs. Have children repeat the words after you. Continue the conversation by talking about why people might use each method of transportation shown on the page. Reread the Book After rereading the text aloud, work with children to complete the graphic organizer on the back cover by drawing and labeling pictures for each category. Use the picture chart on page 2 to review and summarize the book. Have children decide whether they prefer moving objects powered by wind, gasoline, or people, and explain why. 5 3 Learn Through the Text SCIENCE: What Makes It Move? Use Qué los mueve? to reinforce children s understanding of energy sources used to move things. Use a variety of objects that have different properties, such as a feather, a cork, a wooden block, an empty tin can, a cotton ball, and a key. Have children take turns moving the objects first with a hand. Then ask them to try to move the objects using wind power that they create. Have them blow on each object to see if it moves. Record the results in a chart. As an extension to the activity, show children how a magnet can make some objects move. COMPREHENSION: Identify Cause and Effect Turn to pages 3 4. Have partners choose a way to travel from page 2 in the book. (They should choose a way not covered in the rest of the book.) Model sentence frames on the chalkboard to show children what you mean: Qué hace que un/una se mueva? hace que se mueva. Have partners complete the sentence frames, with one child writing the question and the other child writing the answer. Have children draw pictures to illustrate their writing. Post children s work on a bulletin board with the title Qué los mueve?
