Tell them that this is an introduction. It lets them know what kind of information they will find in the rest of the book. Maps: Draw attention to the map on page 5. Point out that the large map shows the location of Puebla, where an important battle took place. Demonstrate how to use the map key to interpret the symbol next to Puebla. Then point to the small map and explain that it is called a locator map because it shows where the country of Mexico is located. Table: Display page 23. Explain that the table organizes information, making it easy to compare. Read the column headings aloud. Explain that the headings tell what kind of information will be in the columns. Preview and Predict Display the book cover, and reread the title. Have students read the chapter titles on the contents page. Sobre qué países crees que leerás en este libro? Cuáles festividades crees que serán más interesantes? Por qué? Activate or Build Background Tell students that a holiday is a special day of celebration. ESL/ELL Strategy Help students understand the meaning of holiday by asking them to share holidays they celebrate in their cultures or countries of origin. Encourage them to describe special foods and activities that are part of their holiday. Students may draw, pantomime, or speak in order to share their experiences. Reread the Book After students reread the text, use the graphic organizer on the back cover to summarize the holidays. Discuss how the authors showed similarities and differences of holidays in different countries. Por qué crees que las autoras hicieron esto? Cómo te ayudó a entender más acerca de las festividades? Answers to Student Book Questions 1. 3. Las respuestas variarán.
5 3 Learn Through the Text SOCIAL STUDIES: Let s Celebrate! Use Festividades to reinforce students understanding of customs practiced during a celebration. Have students page through the book to find examples of things people do on holidays (march in parades, eat special foods, dance and sing, and so on). Explain that these ways of celebrating are examples of customs. Tell students that a custom is a special way that a group does something. Help students grasp the concept by encouraging them to talk about the customs their families follow on holidays. Brainstorm with students customs their class could use to celebrate an important school event such as a class day or a field day. Have them list activities, songs, foods, and any other ideas they may have to celebrate the event. COMPREHENSION: Activate Prior Knowledge Remind students that before they read this book, they talked about holidays and recorded their ideas in a word web. Explain that when you read new information, it is helpful to first think about what you already know about the topic. Using facts you know helps you better understand what you read. Point out that it is a good idea to write down, or record, what you know. Model how to use a word web, an S-Q-A chart, or other concept map to organize information. Divide students into small groups, and assign each group one holiday described in the book. Tell groups to pretend that they are going to read another book about that holiday. Have each group create a concept map, word web, or an S-Q-A chart to record prior knowledge. WRITING Write an Informational Text Have students use what they have learned about informational text to write a class book about holidays. Group students into pairs or groups of three. Have each partner choose a holiday to write about. (Supervise the choice of topics to avoid duplication.) Guide students research at the library or on the Internet. Students may use a graphic organizer similar to the one on the back cover as they take notes. Model for students how to organize and draft information into a report. Empieza por escribir un título en la parte superior de la página. Escribe oraciones que cuenten acerca de la festividad: dónde se celebra, cómo empezó, cómo celebra la gente. Haz un dibujo y agrega un rótulo o pie de dibujo. After students have written a draft, encourage them to revise it. Have them look for places where they might add descriptive words to help readers see the celebrations. When groups have completed their writing, create a contents page and bind the pages together. Ask volunteers to make a cover, including a title such as El libro de los días festivos, and add it to the book. Have students read aloud the pages they wrote in the book. Then place the book next to the classroom calendar for students to refer to during the year.
