2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Persuasive Text Display the book cover, and read aloud the title and the author s name. Tell children that the author of this book believes that it is important to help other people and wants the reader to believe it, too. Tell children that the author gives reasons why she thinks the reader should agree with her idea. Photographs and a checklist also support the author s position. Por qué piensas que la autora quería escribir este libro? Nonfiction Text Features Checklist: Turn to page 7, and point out the checklist. Track the print as you read aloud the heading and entries. Tell children that a checklist helps readers keep track of important information in the text. Point out that three reasons why someone should help out are listed on the checklist and that the reasons are listed one under the other. Page numbers: Encourage children to flip through the book and look at the page number in the corner of each page. Tell children that page numbers help order information and make it easy to find what readers are looking for. Point out that in this book, the spot photographs next to each page number reflect the larger image on the page. Activate or Build Background Children may be unfamiliar with the expression dar una mano. Explain that it is another way of saying ayudar. Ask children to name ways they lend a hand at home, such as making their beds or setting the table. Record their responses in a word web on the chalkboard. Encourage children to repeat the phrase in a sentence, I water the plant to help, and pantomime the action. Follow the same procedure with the remaining photographs. Reread the Book After rereading the text aloud, help children summarize what they have learned by completing the graphic organizer on the back cover together. 5 3 Learn Through the Text Social Studies: People Who Help Use Dar una mano to reinforce children s knowledge of community helpers. Have children page through the book and describe how people are helping one another. Point out that the book tells about people helping one another at home. Explain that many people in a community help each other, too. Display several pictures of community helpers, such as nurses, doctors, police officers, firefighters, and teachers. Help children describe what each helper does. Have children brainstorm other community helpers. Guide their thinking by asking these questions: Quién me mantiene saludable? Quién me mantiene seguro? Quién me ayuda a aprender? Quién ayuda a cuidarme? Have children choose their favorite community helpers and draw pictures of them. Help children label the pictures, and display them on a wall in the classroom or hallway. If possible, invite a helper from your own community to visit the classroom and talk to children about ways he or she helps others. COMPREHENSION: Understand Author s Purpose Explain that authors write for many reasons. Sometimes an author wants to entertain; other times, he or she wants to inform or persuade. Tell children that understanding the author s purpose, or reason for writing, helps them know what to expect when they read a book. Discuss with children why they think the author wrote Dar una mano. Reread the question on page 2, and model how to think about the author s purpose: La autora comienza el libro preguntando por qué deberías dar una mano. Encourage children to examine other favorite classroom texts and pinpoint the author s purpose for writing. WRITING Write a Persuasive Text Have children use what they have learned about persuasive text to write a class book persuading people to behave in a certain way (share things, tell the truth, be polite, and so on). Choose a topic with the class. Help them formulate an opinion, either in a statement (Deberías.) or a question, as in Dar una mano ( Por qué deberías? ). Record the opinion on a sheet of chart paper. Brainstorm with children reasons that support the opinion. Record each reason on an individual sheet of chart paper. Have partners or small groups work together to illustrate each supporting reason. As a class, write a conclusion. The conclusion can take the form of a question: Cómo? Assemble the pages of the book. Create a cover, and bind the pages together. If possible, arrange for children to read the book to another class.
