1 Introduction to Ser and Estar 121 In English we have only one verb for to be. In Spanish we have two, ser and estar. 2. When describing how something is in particular or at the moment, use estar. IN ENGLISH WE SAY I am American. I am rich. I am sick. I am here. IN SPANISH WE SAY Soy americano -a. Soy rico -a. Estoy enfermo -a. Estoy aquí. María está bonita esta noche. = Maria is [particularly] pretty tonight. María es bonita = María is pretty [always]. La comida está deliciosa. = The food [which I am eating now] is delicious. Notice with I am American. and I am rich, we used the verb ser because Ser describes how things are. It LABELS things: Maria is pretty. The house is big. The shirt is small. It is blue. The car is new. María es bonita. La casa es grande. La camisa es pequeña. Es azul. El coche es nuevo. Occupation/avocation: I am a professor. Soy profesor. I am a tourist. Soy turista. I am a student. Soy estudiante. Relationship: We are friends. He is my brother. Somos amigos. Él es mi hermano. Notice with I am sick. and I am here. we used the verb estar. This is because Estar tells how we FEEL... How are you? I am fine. She is sick. I am satisfied. Cómo estás? Estoy bien. Ella está enferma. Estoy satisfecho/-a.... and where we re LOCATED. Where are you? I am in my house. It is on the table. Dónde estás? Estoy en mi casa. Está en la mesa. 1. Estar goes with how (cómo) and where (dónde). How is...? feelings Cómo está...? Where is...? location Dónde está...? 3. Some adjectives subtly change meanings with ser or estar. She is ready She is smart. Ella está lista. Ella es lista. Look how things agree according to masculine & feminine and singular & plural. The car is red. The cars are red. El coche es rojo. Los coches son rojos. The house is white. La casa es blanca. The houses are white. Las casas son blancas. He is sick. She is sick. They (m) are sick. They (f) are sick. Él está enfermo. Ella está enferma. Ellos están enfermos. Ellas están enfermas. When in doubt, ask yourself: Is this how someone FEELS or where someone or something is LOCATED? - Use ESTAR. Is this a description of someone or something that has permanence? - Use SER. This simple formula will work most of the time. Look at the chart on the next page, then go on to the written exercises.
