2 Sign up for Spring Activities at the Library The Rand Branch Library has a summer full of fun for children and adults of all ages. There are craft programs for kids, preschool storytime and some very special events. Please read the descriptions below and join in the fun. Registration for the Summer Reading Club starts Monday, June 1, so don t miss out! It s summer reading time at the Palatine Public Library District! Children ages 2 through adult are invited to join the Summer Reading Program at the Rand Branch. Sign-up begins on Monday, June 1. Participants will earn a grand prize T-shirt for completing all of the reading requirements. Drop-in Craft Tuesdays, June 9 & 23, July 14 & 2, 1:00 5:00 p.m. Children and their parents or caregivers are invited to drop into the Rand Branch and make a simple craft together. Preschool Storytime Fridays, 12:10 12:40 p.m. June 5, 12, 19 & 26; July 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31. Children ages 1 through going into Kindergarten are invited to attend storytime. Parents or caregivers must remain with their child. Owls and other Birds of Prey Thursday, June 25, 7:00 p.m. Join Mark Spreyer, from the Stillman Nature Center, as he presents a program about owls and other birds of prey. He also discusses rehabilitation for these majestic birds. Mark will bring in a few owls for this informative and entertaining program for adults and children of all ages. Crystal Sun Catchers Thursday, June 18, 2:00 p.m. Children in grades 3 and up are invited to join us as we make beautiful crystal sun catchers. These gems are perfect for hanging in your window to help spread summer sunlight. Registration is required and begins Thursday, June 4. Wii Open Gaming Wednesday, July 8, 2:30 4:30 p.m. Visit the Rand Branch and bring a friend for some Wii fun. We will have a variety of games available to play for grades 3 through 6. Registration is required and begins Tuesday, June 23. King of the Jungle Masks Thursday, July 23, 2:00 2:45 p.m. Join us as we read a story about lions and then create our very own King of the Jungle masks! It will be a roaring good time! This program is recommended for grades K-2. Registration is required and begins Thursday, July 9. The Wild Thing Visits the Rand Branch! Friday, July 17, 1:00 2:00 p.m. Get ready to go wild when the character from Maurice Sendak s book, Where the Wild Things Are appears at the Rand Branch. We will read his book and have a craft and of course there will be photo opportunities with the Wild Thing. Mark your calendars and be a part of this wild afternoon! 5 Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser Is Fun for Everyone El evento para recaudar fondos del Cinco de Mayo fue divertido para todos! Despite strong winds and the threat of thunderstorms, the annual Palatine Opportunity Center s Cinco de Mayo fundraiser at the Twin Lakes Clubhouse on May 6 was a big success! Many guests enjoyed the entertainment and delicious Mexican buffet. We also thank the many POC volunteers who decorated the tables, took tickets, led the games and cleaned up afterwards! Funds raised enable the Palatine Opportunity Center to coordinate educational, medical, recreational and social services for over 10,000 people annually in northeast Palatine. 6 MANY HELPED BY COMPUTER TRAINING OFFERED AT POC On Saturday, April 25, ninety-one members of the northeast Palatine community came to the Palatine Opportunity Center for free computer literacy training. This wonderful opportunity was made possible by volunteers provided by Comcast to work one-on-one with each individual based on his or her personal needs. The volunteers came from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Some brought their computer-savvy children to help. Comcast provided lunch boxes and t-shirts for the volunteers and students. In addition, Comcast brought other volunteers to provide child care so that moms and dads could concentrate on learning computer skills. Kathy Millin, Executive Director of the Palatine Opportunity Center, said The Comcast volunteers were patient, enthusiastic, and extremely helpful. All those that came that day were very grateful for their expertise and kindness as they helped bridge the digital divide. Khalid Mohammed, the Comcast Cares Day Project Leader in Palatine, said that Comcast works with many of the community support organizations with whom the POC collaborates. He said, During our search for an opportunity in Palatine we heard about the great work being done at the Palatine Opportunity Center. He and Debra Marton, Comcast Regional Corporate Affairs Manager, approached the POC in early March and found that a great project for collaboration presented itself for Comcast in working with the POC s Family Learning Lab. In preparing for this Internet Skills Workshop, Khalid approached the Comcast University staff to create an outline for a 90-minute computer and internet class. There were 29 volunteers from Comcast. Because the classes were mainly composed of community members for whom English is a second language, the translating done by Maria Cardenas, one of the Comcast Cares Day Project Leaders, was most appreciated! Assistance from the Comcast University staff members, David Swift, James Brown (Sales), and Valerie Ratchford was also essential to the instruction. And none of it could have happened without the other Comcast volunteers and their families. Khalid informed us that Comcast conducts a nation-wide day of volunteering each year. This year over 50,000 Comcast employees, family and friends volunteered to help communities across the nation. Locally, more than 5,800 volunteers gave back to the community at 61 different projects that included blood drives through the city, environmental revitalization at nature centers, park clean ups, general landscaping, mulching a replacing fiber in children s playgrounds, help with medically fragile children, and rehab and painting of schools. 8 DAY OF THE CHILD CELEBRATED AT POC DÍA DE LOS NIÑOS CELEBRADO EN POC On April 30 the agencies at the Palatine Opportunity Center collaborated to host the second annual Dia De Los Ninos (Day of the Child) celebration. More than 200 children and their families came to the POC throughout the day to enjoy various activities. El 30 de abril las agencias en Palatine Opportunity Center colaboraron para organizar la segunda celebración anual Día De Los Niños. In the morning there was Face Painting by Laura, a VIP volunteer. There was also Bingo, with prizes donated by Rosa s Dollar Buster and CEDA. Our Community Health Nurse Rose Jensen passed out information on health and nutrition for families to take home. Many children also had fun with the crafts provided by the Palatine Park District and Palatine Opportunity Center staff members. For the very little children there were also crafts and games provided all day by ECDEC. The final event of the day was a very exciting and well received family program called Pocket Circus which was sponsored by the Palatine Public Library. This was a bilingual duo from Argentina who performed magic and a circus style of entertainment. 9 ECDEC This year has been a great year for all the ECDEC children and the summer will be a time to relax and spend time with family and friends. June 3 is the last day of class for students. A couple of reminders for families to keep in mind while they are home this summer with their children: Get those school physicals done and get them done early to avoid the back to school rush! Practice some of the fun activities suggested on the list provided during conferences. Read, read, and read some more with your child all summer long! The library is open and is a great resource for great books to enjoy with your child. Registration information will come in the mail so look for it! Enjoy the summer and we will see all returning students in August and wish the best to all the Kindergarten students at their new schools! FIND PI FIND PI Another successful year has come to a close with the annual end of the year party enjoyed by many families. Everyone had a great time with all the games, stories, and art activities planned for the day. We look forward to everyone returning for another year of FIND PI programs with Cheryl, Lily, Rocio and Arturo in September. This year went by very quickly and families were able to experience many wonderful programs with their children. Workshops were added and we hope to continue those next year with more new speakers. Staff also saw so many new babies and their parents come with dedication each week to POC. Activities and resources will continue to focus on our newest population, the babies of POC! Just as a reminder for the summer time, if you have a child turning three, don t forget to get the school physical completed. The sooner the better since doctors get busy. Also, if your child is turning three this summer or early fall, it is time to call Maria for a screening appointment. Her number is These screening appointments fill quickly, so again the sooner, the better. On behalf of the FIND PI staff, have a wonderful summer and we will see you in September! Village of Palatine residents need a Village Sticker which can be purchased at the Palatine Village Hall, 200 E. Wood Street, Palatine, IL. Unincorporated residents need a Cook County Vehicle Sticker which can be purchased at the Palatine Township Center, 721 S. Quentin, Palatine, IL. If you are unsure whether you reside in the unincorporated area of Cook County, please double-check by calling Palatine Township at (847) ; give us your address and we will advise you if your home is in an incorporated municipality or unincorporated Cook County. Further information on Cook County Vehicle Stickers for Unincorporated Residents only: * If you purchase your sticker after July 1, you will be charged a late penalty equal to the price of the sticker or $25, whichever is greater. You may also be subject to additional penalties if your sticker is not displayed by July 1. * Individuals who have turned 65 by July 1 may purchase a $5.00 sticker which will remain effective for as long as he/she owns the car. This discount is limited to 2 cars. Senior truck, motorcycle, or trailer owners are required to pay full price for those stickers. * Newly-acquired vehicles: For any new or used vehicle purchased or acquired after July 1, a valid Cook County Vehicle Sticker must be displayed within 30 days of the date of acquisition. Proof of purchase required. A penalty will be charged for late purchases. * For vehicles purchased on or after December 1 of the application year, Vehicle Stickers may be purchased at half price (excluding seniors), when proof of purchase is provided. Stickers must be purchased within 30 days. A penalty will be charged for late purchases. * New residents: Within 60 days of taking up residence within the unincorporated area of Cook County, a current Cook County Vehicle Sticker must be displayed on the owner s vehicle. Proof of occupancy required. A penalty will be charged for late purchases. 14 Greetings from your Community Health Nurse Saludos de su Enfermera de la Salud de la Comunidad Warm weather is finally here and everyone is starting to enjoy the outdoors. Now that school will be out soon, I hope adults as well as kids stop by my office to say hello! My hours will be Mon-Thu from 10am-1pm. If I m at a meeting or class, please leave me a note so I can get back to you. As the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outside, remember everyone should wear sunscreen and drink fluids (no juice or pop, WATER!!). Especially if kids are swimming and running around. Speaking of running, we now have a running club!! A big thank you to Coach Eric and Coach Amy for volunteering to run this new and very fun icompete program! Northwest Community Hospital donated pedometers which the kids are using to enhance their training. Kids it s not too late, call POC for more information. Palatine Police Are Partners With the Palatine Opportunity Center The Police Social Services Unit has two counselors available by appointment on Mondays through Fridays. They provide crisis intervention, short-term individual counseling, family and couples counseling and court advocacy. The Police Department also partners with POC on the Summer Camp and provides valuable mentoring for teenage boys on Friday evenings. They are Angie Mira, who speaks Spanish and Nina Vaynrub who speaks Russian. They are available to help with public aid, food stamps, immigration, public benefits and case advocacy. On Tuesdays Angie is available from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Nina is available from 9am to 11:30 p.m. Nina is also at the office on Wednesday from 2 p.m.to 5 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Senior Center also provides some education, recreation, and health and wellness programs.
