1 Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services Important Notice about MassHealth Behavioral Health Services for Children and Youths under Age 21 MassHealth has made many improvements to behavioral health services for children and youths under 21. These changes include better ways to screen and test for problems. They also include many new behavioral health services that can treat mental health and substance abuse issues that may be affecting your child. Well-Child Checkups It s important for children, teens, and young adults to see their primary care doctor or nurse for regular checkups. Well-child checkups help children and youth stay healthy. They find small problems early before they become bigger. MassHealth pays for children and youths under 21 to see their primary care doctor or nurse for well-child visits at least once every year and more often if the child is under two years. At these visits, the doctor or nurse will check your child s health, development, need for immunizations, dental health, and behavioral health. Behavioral Health Screening During well-child visits, your child s doctor or nurse will offer to use a screening tool to check your child s behavioral health. This is a short list of questions that you, your teen, or a young adult fills out and then talks about with the doctor or nurse. If there are concerns about your child s behavioral health, your child s doctor or nurse will work with you to decide if more care is needed. If you decide that your child needs more care, the doctor or nurse can help you get services. You do not need a referral for the services. The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) Tool Behavioral health providers can be doctors, nurses, social workers, and counselors. If your child sees a behavioral health provider, MassHealth requires them to use the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) tool. The CANS tool helps the provider learn about your child s strengths and needs. The provider will write down and save important information gathered from the first visit or visits. It also helps you and the provider plan your child s treatment and watch his or her progress. Ask your child s behavioral health provider to tell you more about the CANS tool. MassHealth Behavioral Health Services MassHealth and the MassHealth health care plans pay for many new or improved behavioral services for children and youths under age 21. In these services, parents play a strong and active role in their child s treatment. CBHI-Insert (11/10)

2 Outpatient Therapy * If this is the first time your child is getting help, then outpatient therapy may be the best place to begin. A counselor will meet with you and your child to find out your child s needs and strengths; make a plan to help your child; and help your child get any other needed services. In-Home Therapy * If your child s behavior is making daily life hard for the family, then in-home therapy may be right for your child and family. Counselors work with your whole family, helping you as a parent to help your child. In-home therapy can help your child and family to resolve conflicts; learn new ways to do things; make new routines; set limits; and find community resources. Intensive Care Coordination (ICC) ICC is for children and youths with a serious emotional disturbance. ICC helps to get all the adults in your child s life to work together. In ICC, a Care Coordinator helps you bring together the main adults in your child s life so that everyone is working together to help your child. You choose who is on your team, including professionals (therapists, social workers, teachers) and your personal supports (friends or relatives). You may also ask for a Family Partner, a parent trained to make sure your voice is heard. Together, the team will help you and your child reach your goals for your family. Children and youths get ICC services through Community Service Agencies, or CSAs. There are 32 CSAs located throughout Massachusetts. There are three CSAs chosen for their special skill serving Black, Latino, and deaf and hard of hearing children and youths. Mobile Crisis Intervention * Mobile crisis intervention is for when your child is having a crisis and needs help right away. You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A trained team will come to your home, a school, or other place in the community to help your child with the crisis. The team will also help you get other services for your child and family. If your child gets outpatient therapy, in-home therapy, or intensive care coordination and needs more help, he or she may also be able to get the following services. In-Home Behavioral Services Sometimes a child will do something over and over that bothers other people or harms the child. If it is hard to get the child to act differently, a therapist will work with you and others in your child s life to try new ways to help your child change these behaviors. Therapeutic Mentors Some children want to get along with others, but need help and practice learning to talk or act in new ways. A therapeutic mentor will go with your child to the places where your child has the most trouble and teach him or her new skills, such as better ways to talk or act with other children and adults.

3 Family Support and Training (Family Partners) Do you need support? Family Partners help parents and caregivers help their children reach their treatment goals. They are parents or caregivers of children with special needs they ve been there, understand what families go through and can share their experiences. Family Partners are not behavioral health professionals, but work closely with parents to help them get the services their children need. MassHealth paga para que los niños y jóvenes menores de 21 años vayan a visitas médicas de rutina para niños al menos una vez al año con su médico o enfermera de cuidado primario y con más frecuencia si el niño es menor de dos años. En estas consultas, el médico o la enfermera hacen un chequeo de la salud del niño, su desarrollo y las vacunas que pueda necesitar, así como de su salud dental y su salud del comportamiento. Evaluación de salud del comportamiento Durante las visitas médicas de rutina para niños, el médico o la enfermera de su hijo ofrecerán la posibilidad de realizar una prueba de detección selectiva para examinar la salud del comportamiento del niño. Se trata de una lista corta de preguntas para que usted, el adolescente o el joven las contesten y luego las comenten con el médico o la enfermera. Si surgen inquietudes relacionadas con la salud del comportamiento de su hijo, el médico o la enfermera hablarán con usted para determinar si se requiere más atención. Si usted decide que su hijo necesita más atención, el médico o la enfermera pueden ayudarle a recibir los servicios del caso. Usted no necesita una referencia para dichos servicios. Instrumento Necesidades y fortalezas del niño y el adolescente (CANS) Los proveedores de salud del comportamiento pueden ser médicos, enfermeras, trabajadores sociales y consejeros. Si un proveedor de salud del comportamiento atiende a su hijo, MassHealth le exige a este profesional el uso de un instrumento de diagnóstico llamado "Necesidades y fortalezas del niño y el adolescente" o CANS (por sus siglas en inglés). El instrumento CANS le sirve al proveedor para enterarse de las fortalezas y las necesidades de su hijo. El proveedor anotará y conservará información importante que obtenga en las consultas que tenga con su hijo. El formulario les ayudará también a usted y al proveedor de salud del comportamiento a planificar el tratamiento de su hijo y a observar su evolución. Pídale al profesional de salud del comportamiento de su hijo que le hable un poco más acerca del instrumento CANS. Servicios de salud del comportamiento de MassHealth MassHealth y sus planes de seguro médico pagan el costo de muchos servicios nuevos o mejorados de salud del comportamiento para niños y para jóvenes menores de 21 años. 5 Terapia ambulatoria* Si esta es la primera vez que su hijo recibe ayuda, tal vez lo mejor sea comenzar con psicoterapia ambulatoria. Un consejero se reunirá con usted y con su hijo para lo siguiente: averiguar las necesidades y fortalezas de su hijo; hacer un plan para ayudar a su hijo; y ayudar a su hijo a recibir otros servicios que necesite. Terapia en el hogar* Si el comportamiento de su hijo está causando dificultades en la vida cotidiana de la familia, la Terapia en el hogar puede ser el servicio adecuado para su hijo y su familia. Los consejeros trabajarán con la familia entera y les ayudarán a los padres a ayudarle a su hijo. La Terapia en el hogar puede servirles al niño y a la familia para lo siguiente: solucionar conflictos; aprender otras formas de hacer las cosas; desarrollar nuevos hábitos; fijar límites; y hallar recursos en la comunidad. Coordinación de cuidados intensivos (ICC, por sus siglas en inglés) ICC es un servicio para niños y jóvenes que tengan un trastorno emocional grave. Este servicio coordina a todos los adultos importantes en la vida del niño. Un coordinador de atención le ayudará a reunir a los principales adultos en la vida del niño para que todos trabajen en equipo a fin de ayudarle a éste. Usted escoge a los integrantes del equipo, entre ellos los profesionales (terapeutas, trabajadores sociales, maestros) y las personas que le den apoyo personal (amigos o parientes). También puede solicitar la participación de un Family Partner, quien es un padre de familia capacitado para ayudarle a asegurarse de que su opinión se tenga en cuenta. Juntos, este equipo de personas le ayudará a usted y a su hijo a lograr las metas que la familia se haya propuesto. Los niños y los jóvenes reciben los servicios de ICC a través de agencias de servicio comunitario, conocidas por las siglas en inglés CSA. Hay 32 CSA en todo Massachusetts. Hay tres CSA seleccionados por sus capacidades especiales para atender a niños y jóvenes de raza negra, de ascendencia latina o que sean sordos o con dificultades auditivas. Intervención móvil en situaciones de crisis* Este servicio se emplea cuando su hijo tiene una crisis y necesita ayuda de inmediato. Usted puede llamar las 24 horas del día, 7 días a la semana. Un equipo capacitado acudirá a una casa, a una escuela o a otros lugares de la comunidad para ayudarle a su hijo durante una crisis. El equipo le ayudará además a conseguir otros servicios para su hijo y su familia. Si su hijo recibe servicios de terapia ambulatoria, de terapia en el hogar o de coordinación de cuidados intensivos y necesita más ayuda, quizá pueda recibir también los siguientes servicios: Servicios en el hogar para el comportamiento A veces un niño hace una y otra vez algo que molesta a otras personas o le hace daño a sí mismo. Si es muy difícil hacer que actúe de manera diferente, un terapeuta colaborará con usted y con otras personas que forman parte de la vida del niño para tratar otras formas de ayudar a su hijo a cambiar estas conductas. Asesores terapéuticos Algunos niños y adolescentes quieren llevarse bien con los demás pero necesitan ayuda y práctica para aprender a hablar o actuar de otra forma. El asesor terapéutico irá con el niño a los lugares en los que éste tiene más dificultades y le enseñará nuevas destrezas, por ejemplo, mejores maneras de hablar o de actuar con otros niños y adultos.

6 Apoyo y capacitación a la familia ( Family Partners ) Necesita apoyo? Family Partners ayudan a los padres y cuidadores para que a su vez ellos ayuden a los niños a lograr las metas del tratamiento. Estos Family Partners son padres o cuidadores de niños que tienen necesidades especiales; han estado en la misma situación, entienden las dificultades por las que pasan las familias y pueden hablar de sus propias experiencias. Los Family Partners no son profesionales de salud del comportamiento, pero trabajan hombro a hombro con los padres de familia para ayudarles a conseguir los servicios que sus hijos necesitan. Si tiene preguntas o necesita más información, hable con el médico o la enfermera de cuidado primario de su hijo o con el proveedor de salud del comportamiento de su hijo. También puede llamar al número del Servicio al cliente de MassHealth que corresponda al plan de cuidado médico administrado de MassHealth de su hijo.
