1 BOSTON COLLEGE Intermediate Spanish II SPAN1116 Instructor: _ Office: Class Meeting Time: Office Hours: Spring 2015, 3 credits Office Phone/ CATALOG DESCRIPTION This course is a continuation of SPAN1115. Students will expand their vocabulary and develop written and oral fluency. Emphasis is on active student participation and broadening historical and cultural knowledge. Short literary and cultural readings will provide authentic insight into the Hispanic world. Students will have the opportunity to work with videos, films, and other recordings. Conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN1115 or admission by placement test: COURSE OBJECTIVES This course preserves its focus on perfecting your ability to communicate in Spanish by helping you to master several important language functions, or things that you can do with the language. These functions will help you to create with the language, participate in conversations, ask and answer questions and handle everyday topics and social situations. We begin with a review of the functions studied last semester: describing and comparing people and places; narrating in the past; reacting to events and situations and making recommendations. We then explore more thoroughly this semester s functions: expressing likes and dislikes and explaining why, hypothesizing on both personal and impersonal topics, and talking about the future. We will review the major grammar points needed to express these functions. Most of the grammar, however, will not be new to you. This is because the purpose of the course is not to learn new rules and forms, but rather to learn to apply the rules in communicative situations. Class time will be devoted primarily to speaking, listening and new vocabulary practice, and discussing readings and other expressions of Hispanic culture. TEXTBOOKS 1. Foerster, Sharon W., Anne Lambright. Punto y aparte. 4th. ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2011, and Manual que acompaña Punto y aparte, 4 th ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2011 (includes Punto y aparte textbook and Manual). 2. Foerster, Sharon W., Anne Lambright and Ramonita Marcano-Ogando. Lecturas literarias. Boston: McGraw- Hill, Foerster, Sharon W., Anne Lambright. A Grammar Supplement Designed to Accompany Punto y aparte. Special edition with additional materials by Helena A. Alfonzo, Christopher LaFond, and Henry Borrero. Boston: McGraw-Hill, The Boston College Course Pack of readings (note: this is the same Course Pack used in Fall If you do not already have a copy of the Course Pack, please buy it at the beginning of the semester to ensure that you get a copy. If the BC Bookstore has sold out of the Course Pack, then please request a Course Pack from the BC Bookstore.) COURSE WEB PAGE: (Canvas) & (SPAN1116 website) COURSE CONTENTS: 1. Oral Comprehension / Speaking / Culture: Classes are conducted in Spanish and provide daily opportunities for practice in speaking, in groups and/or individually. Oral communication skills and class participation/preparation are a significant component of the course and will be evaluated regularly. You will also perform oral presentations with your classmates on various topics. Videos and other authentic listening materials, featuring Spanish-speaking peoples from Spain, Latin America and the United States, will increase your understanding of spoken Spanish and add to your appreciation of contemporary Hispanic culture. In addition, you will view a feature-length film in Spanish. 1 RL116 Syllabus, Spring 2015

2 2. Reading / Writing / Culture: We will read and discuss poems, essays and short stories from Lecturas literarias, and other sources, with an emphasis on expanding your awareness of the Hispanic world and on developing reading comprehension strategies. In addition, the Rincón cultural segments will provide you with a chance to discuss with your classmates what you have researched about the people, culture, history, current issues, politics, etc. of various Hispanic countries. You will also write a number of paragraph-length essays, both in and out of class. Writing emphasis this semester will be on constructing cohesive, interesting paragraphs. In addition, we will continue last semester s focus on writing more complex sentences. Please double space any prose. Seeking help on written work without permission of the instructor is not acceptable; this includes using tutors for help on these assignments. Using a dictionary is fine, but use of an online translator will be considered a violation of the university policy on Academic Integrity. See BC Academic Honesty policy on following link: Please note that composition topics and due dates, as well as other activities, are not scheduled on the syllabus. Your instructor will assign writing assignments during the semester. Therefore, if you miss class, consult a classmate to find out if any additional homework has been assigned before coming to the next class. Remember: you are responsible for handing in work on time, and for being prepared for quizzes, regardless of whether you miss class or not. Please write any exercises assigned from Punto y aparte, Lecturas literarias, and other texts on loose-leaf paper. Additionally, it is highly recommended that all students check their BC everyday, since your instructor could assign additional assignments not listed on the syllabus. 3. Puntos clave / Workbook / Language Lab: In each chapter we will study and practice new vocabulary and the key grammatical structures (Puntos clave) needed to perform the major language functions described in Course Objectives above. Regular assignments from the Manual (workbook) accompany each lesson and will be due on indicated days. Exercises from Punto y aparte may also be assigned and collected. Please write any exercises assigned from Punto y aparte on loose-leaf paper. To do the workbook/lab please follow these instructions: Complete the activities. Check answers against answer key in the back of the workbook, correct in another colored ink by crossing out the incorrect answer and writing in the correct one. Staple the workbook chapter pages in numerical order. Unstapled pages will not be accepted. To complete the LISTENING SECTION (Práctica oral) of the Manual, log onto Select the Listen Online link and then the appropriate chapter from the list on the next page. You will then see the individual activities for that chapter. Click on the link once to play it. If that does not work for you, follow these instructions: Windows/Linux users need to right-click on each link and save it to your desktop; Mac users need to click on the link, holding the mouse down until you see the menu that gives you the option to save the file, again to the desktop (or you can click on it while holding the Control button). From your desktop, you can play each file as an MP3 in your favorite player. The answers to most of the activities are in the back of the Manual, and follow the answers to the Práctica escrita. If you have problems accessing any of the material, please go to the Language Lab in Lyons 313 and do the Práctica oral there. Access issues are not a valid reason for not completing the assignment on time. For those who may be having technical difficulties, the Language Lab is located in Lyons 313, You may go to the Lab and do the activities on one of the computers there. Language Lab Hours: M-TH 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. SAT Closed F 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. SUN 1:00-9:00 p.m. 4. Extra Help: Your Spanish instructor is available during office hours to help clarify concepts. In addition, the Connors Family Learning Center (CFLC) provides free tutoring in Intermediate Spanish. CFLC is located on the second floor of the O'Neill Library. If you need extra practice or are experiencing difficulty, speak with your instructor and make use of CFLC services. 2 RL116 Syllabus, Spring 2015

3 5. The CASA HISPANICA: (Vouté Hall) offers many opportunities for language practice and cultural enrichment. Your instructor will be announcing the Center s activities, so try to participate in them. The director of the Casa hispánica sends periodic s announcing upcoming events. Also, practice your Spanish by participating in the Café en español chat sessions on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Welch Dining Room in Lyons Hall. 6. Distribution of Grades: *7-10 short quizzes (lowest quiz dropped) 20% *Midterm Exam 10% Final Exam 20% **Oral Communication Skills/ Class work 20% (including homework & attendance) ***Written Work 10% ***Manual (workbook & lab) 12% *Film Festival Participation 3% Oral Presentations 5% * NO MAKEUPS - Department policy (even when absences are officially excused) ** The Department permits three personal/sick days. Additional absences will lower the overall semester grade 1 point/absence (e.g., if your final class average is a 91/A- and you have five absences, then your overall grade will be dropped by 2 points and you will receive an 89/B+ for the course). See the College of A&S Attendance Policy via - attendance Excessive absences, even when officially excused, may result in failure. Additionally, the use of cell phones or other electronic devices during class is prohibited; any use of cell phones or other electronic devices during class, including for text messaging purposes, will affect a student's class participation grade. ***Daily homework assignments will only be accepted on the due dates indicated on the syllabus and are to be completed before class. Written assignments (essays & workbooks) are to be turned in on the days indicated on the syllabus or by your instructor. No late work (essays or workbooks) will be accepted without prior written approval from the instructor given at least 48 hours in advance (permission granted via is acceptable). No credit will be given for late, daily homework. See the university policy at - attendance 7. Final Exam: There will be a 2 hour Final Exam. NOTE: THIS COURSE HAS A DEPARTMENTAL FINAL ON: SATURDAY, May 9, 2015 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. 8. Americans with Disabilities Act. If you have a disability and will be requesting accommodations for this course, you are encouraged to register at the beginning of the semester with Kathy Duggan (Kathleen.duggan@bc.edu), Associate Director, Academic Support Services, the Connors Family Learning Center (learning disabilities and ADHD) or Paulette Durrett (paulette.durrett@bc.edu), Assistant Dean for Students with Disabilities (medical, physical, psychological, and temporary disabilities). Advance notice (one week prior to the first written quiz) and appropriate documentation (a letter outlining your accommodation needs from one of the above offices) are required for accommodations. In computing grades the following numerical equivalents for the twelve letter grades will be used: A 4.00 (96-100) B (80-82) D (67-69) A (91-95) C (77-79) D 1.00 (64-66) B (87-90) C 2.00 (74-76) D-.67 (60-63) B 3.00 (83-86) C (70-73) F.00 (below 60) Note: Since SPAN1116 is a continuation of SPAN1115, all students, regardless of whether they were enrolled in SPAN1115 last semester, are responsible for knowing the vocabulary and the first four Puntos clave (from the Green Pages) in Punto y aparte. These four Puntos clave will be reviewed briefly on the first two days of this semester. 3 RL116 Syllabus, Spring 2015

4 Materials from Lecturas literarias, the Course Pack, and the Rincón cultural sections of Punto y aparte do not carry over into the new semester. *** Learning another language takes ongoing dedication and effort. In order to begin to master the speaking, writing, and comprehension of a language, as well as to gain an understanding of the culture(s) from which it comes, students are expected to complete the assignments given on a daily basis, rather than trying to catch up at any given point during the semester. The high academic standards of Boston College require that most students achieve a minimum proficiency level of intermediate in another language. Students enrolled in Intermediate Spanish should expect to spend at least 2 hours preparing for each 50-minute class session; some may need to spend more time than that in order to keep up with the course work.
