4 4 AOTrauma Course Fracture Treatment of the Pediatric Goal of the course The AOTrauma Course Fracture Treatment of the Pediatric aims to create a clinically centered learning environment where the current principles and techniques of fracture management in children and adolescents are demonstrated, applied, and discussed. In this course, modern concepts in pediatric fracture care are covered at an advanced level. During the practical exercises, participants will practice the methods presented and discussed in this course. In addition, a special symposium focuses on pediatric orthopedic topics and current pediatric orthopedic syndromes. Target participants This course is for traumatologists, orthopedic surgeons, and other surgeons who are actively engaged in pediatric fracture care and who want to enhance their level of expertise in this eld. Ideally, participants have already completed the AOTrauma Course Principles in Operative Fracture Management. Course objectives At the end of this course, participants should be able to: Recognize how bone characteristics and fracture classi cation are different in children and adolescents compared with adults, and describe how this affects bone healing and fracture management. Evaluate a range of nonoperative and surgical options for the treatment of common pediatric fractures. Manage pediatric fractures according to biological and mechanical principles, and apply appropriate techniques and technologies. Apply treatment strategies for pediatric fractures based on available evidence, and discuss areas of controversy. Develop strategies for the prevention and management of complications associated with pediatric fractures. Manage pediatric orthopedic syndromes according to modern concepts, and apply appropriate treatments methods. Course description To be a child means to move, play, and take part in sports. Children do not like being con ned to bed having their arm or leg in a cumbersome plaster cast restricting their ability to play and move around. Since growth in childhood can be in uenced by fractures, it is important to learn about proper and necessary orthopedic treatment in young patients. Through a series of lectures, practical exercises, and discussion groups, key topics are explored in this course and current operative and plaster cast techniques are demonstrated and practiced.
