O R G 1 Bilateral Trade MEXICO CANADA TRADE January - May 2008 Mexico-Canada bilateral trade recorded the value of $10.47 billion USD, 13.8% higher than the figure shown in the same month in Furthermore, this value is 6 times higher than the trade number recorded in 1993 ($1.50 billion USD), an average annual growth rate of 13.8% in the NAFTA age. NAFTA Trade In May 2008, trilateral trade in North America increased 12.2% with regard to the same month last year, resulting in $ billion USD. As for the bilateral exchange between Mexico and United States, it increased 12.2% up to May 2008 compared to the same month last year, resulting in $ billion USD. Trade Balance In May 2008, Mexico-Canada trade exchange recorded a cumulated surplus in favour of Mexico of $2.72 billion US dollars (USD), $362 million less than the value recorded for the same month in The reason for this reduction in the trade balance in favour of Mexico has been result of this year s increase of Canada s exports of aeronautics-sector products to Mexico, which cumulated value from January through May 2008 reached $319 million USD. Canadian Exports to Mexico In May 2008, Mexico became the Canada s fifth exporting market (2.0%), being exceeded by sales to United States, United Kingdom, China and Japan. In terms of value, exports from Canada into Mexico reached the $3.87 billion USD, 839% and 26.7% higher than sales carried out in May of 1993 and 2007, respectively. The average annual growth rate of exports of Canada into Mexico registered for the period of May 1993 to May 2008 was 16.1%. During the period of January-May 2008, the main products imported by Mexico from Canada corresponded to the following sectors: aeronautics, chemical, automotive-autoparts, and agricultural (wheat). The aeronautics sector led again exports from Canada to Mexico in this period, with a participation higher than 8.2% from the total. Comercio TLCAN A mayo de 2008, el comercio trilateral en América del Norte aumentó 12.2% con respecto al mismo mes del año anterior, ubicándose en $402,471 mdd. Por su parte, el intercambio bilateral de México-EE.UU. se incrementó 12.2% a mayo de 2008 comparado con el mismo mes del año anterior, ubicándose en $155,086 mdd. Balanza Comercial Al mes de mayo de 2008, el intercambio comercial México-Canadá registró un superávit a favor de México por $2,723 millones de dólares americanos (mdd), monto $362 mdd inferior al observado al mismo mes de Esta reducción en la balanza comercial a favor de México ha tenido su origen en el surgimiento a partir de este año de las exportaciones de Canadá a México de productos del sector aeronáutico, cuyo valor acumulado de enero a mayo de 2008 es superior a los $319 mdd. Exportaciones de Canadá a México En mayo de 2008, México se ubicó como el quinto mercado de exportación para Canadá (2.0%), siendo superado por las ventas realizadas a EE.UU, Reino Unido, China y Japón. En términos de valor, las exportaciones de Canadá a México alcanzaron los $3,877 mdd, 839% y 26.7% superiores a las ventas realizadas en los meses de mayo de 1993 y 2007, respectivamente. La tasa de crecimiento anual promedio de las exportaciones de Canadá a México para el período mayo 1993 mayo 2008 se ubicó en 16.1%. O R G 2 Mexican Exports to Canada In May 2008, Mexico retook the position of third largest supplier of Canada, gaining the 3.9% of the Canadian imports market value, percentage only exceeded by products imported from United States (54.4%) and China (8.8%). Mexico surpassed Japan, who this month recorded a 3.8%. Sales of Mexican products to Canada reached $6,60 billion USD, an amount 504% higher than the number recorded in May of 1993 and 7.4% higher than the sales of Mexico in Canada carried out during May The average annual growth rate of exports from Mexico into Canada for the period of May 1993 to May 2007 was 12.7%. In terms of value, the main exports from Mexico into Canada consisted of goods from the electronics sector (T.V. sets and computers), automotive and auto-parts sector, mining (gold) and tobacco. O R G 3 Investment from Canada in Mexico During the last fifteen years, Canadian foreign direct investment (FDI) has been a key factor for the integration of our productive sectors: From January 1994 to June 2008, Canada s cumulative FDI in Mexico reached the $7.8 billion USD, becoming the fourth largest foreign investor in Mexico. In June of 2008, more than 2,040 companies were doing business in Mexico with Canadian capital. These results show how highly reliable the NAFTA s legal framework is to Canadian investors to do business in Mexico.
