1 Parent Handbook Guía para los Padres Purpose of the Religious Education Program Propósito del Programa de Educación Religiosa The religious education program is designed for children in grades The purpose of this program is to educate the children in the Catholic faith so that they assume responsibilities in today s world. You, the parents, are the primary teachers of your children. El programa de educación religiosa es para los niños de 2 a 12 grado. 2 Admissions Policy / Requisitos para admisión a las clases Homework If homework is assigned, the student should complete it in accordance with the teacher s directives. Parents will be notified if the student does not complete the assignments. Parents are encouraged to visit the classrooms. Please notify the teacher in advance of the day you wish to visit the class. La Tarea Si hay tarea para la clase, el estudiante debe cumplirla antes de llegar a la clase. Se le notificará a los padres si los estudiantes no hacen la tarea. Les invitamos a visitar las clases. Favor notifique al catequista si va a visitarles. Every child who is registered and whose parents have paid the annual fee will be admitted to religious education classes. Each child should be at least 7 years old. If you have not paid the annual fee, you are asked to speak to the director to make arrangements for payments in installments. Each child must re-register each year and parents pay the annual fee before classes begin. No child will be discriminated due to race, sex, national origin or disability. No food or drinks are permitted in the classrooms. Absences Ausencias No more than three absences are permitted each year. If your child misses the class more than three times, the catechetical course for the year is not counted. Please call the catechist or the assistant to religious education if your child is unable to attend religious education class. A note should be written to the teacher. Cualquier estudiante que está registrado(a) y sus padres han pagado la cuota será admitido a las clases de catecismo. El estudiante debe haber cumplido los 7 años de edad. Si no han pagado la cuota, hay que hablar con el director de la catequesis para hacer un arreglo de pagos. Hay que inscribir a los niños cada año. Hay que pagar la cuota cada año antes de que empiecen las clases. No hay discriminación de raza, sexo, origen nacional o incapacidad. No se permite comida en las aulas de clase. No se permite más de tres ausencias al año. Si los estudiantes faltan más de tres veces sin permiso, el año de catecismo no cuenta. Hay que avisar al catequista o al director si su hijo(a) no va a poder asistir a clase. Se debe escribir una nota al catequista cuando falte una clase. 2

3 Discipline La Disciplina The teachers and the director of religious education have the right to remove a student from his/her class if his/her behavior does not allow religious instruction to occur. Parents will be notified immediately if we need to remove your son/daughter from the religious education program. The following types of conduct are inappropriate: 1. Fighting 2. Defiance of staff 3. Use of profanity 4. Refusal to prepare assignment or to participate in class 5. Possession of dangerous objects, tobacco or a controlled substance 6. Damage to property 7. Leaving 8. Habitual tardiness 9. Intimidating fellow students 10. Cheating Los catequistas y el director del programa tienen el derecho de llamar la atención a un jóven de la clase si su comportamiento interrumpe la instrucción en la clase. Se notificará inmediatamente a los padres si tenemos que sacar a su hijo(a) de la clase de catecismo. Los siguientes comportamientos son inaceptables: 1. Pelear 2. Desafiar a los catequistas 3. Usar malas palabras 4. No querer participar en clase ni hacer las tareas 5. Tener objetos peligrosos, Tabaco o alguna droga 6. Dañar el edificio 7. Dejar el edificio sin permiso 8. 4 By means of your example and your practice of the faith, you teach your children daily how to live in today s world as Catholics. The religious education teachers are volunteers who help you prepare your children to receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist, First Penance and Confirmation and when necessary, Baptism. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we all cooperate in the Christian formation of youth. Requirements for the Sacraments Each Sacrament requires a minimum of two years of preparation. The children must attend class regularly, especially during the months prior to receiving the sacraments when a parent or godparent is asked to attend class with the child. Each child must pass an exam. He/she should attend the practices with his/her sponsor for Confirmation or at least one adult. All young people must attend at least three years of religious education in order to be eligible for the sacrament of Confirmation. We appreciate your cooperation with these rules. Los padres son los primeros maestros de sus hijos. Por medio de su ejemplo y su práctica de la fe Católica ustedes enseñan a sus hijos a vivir como Católicos practicantes todos los días. Los catequistas les ayudan en el proceso de preparación para recibir los sacramentos de la Reconciliación, la Eucaristía, y la Confirmación, y si es necesario, el Bautismo. Con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, todos cooperamos en la formación cristiana de los jóvenes. Requisitos para los Sacramentos Cada sacramento requiere de un mínimo de dos años de preparación. Después de dos años, si el catequista o el director decide que el estudiante todavía no está preparado, hay que seguir tomando las clases. Los niños tienen que asistir a las clases especiales que se ofrecen en los meses antes de recibir los sacramentos cuando se pide que un padre o padrino asista a la clase con el niño(a). Cada niño tiene que pasar un examen y debe asistir a las prácticas para los sacramentos con su padrino de Confirmación o con un adulto. Todos los niños y jóvenes deben asistir a las clases de catecismo por lo menos por tres años antes de recibir el sacramento de la Confirmación. Apreciamos su cooperación con todas estas reglas para que podamos educar mejor a sus hijos en la fe Católica. 4

5 Dismissal Despedida al final de la clase To safeguard the children we will only allow the children to leave the school with their parent or another designated adult. Please proceed to each classroom at 11:25 am to sign out each child before you take them home. If you wish your child to be dismissed early, we ask that you write a note indicating the time, date and the reason for early dismissal. Please also name the person who will be responsible for your child once he/she is dismissed. If no one comes to pick up the children, we ask the student to please report to the assistant of Religious Education Program so that he may contact the parent. No child should ever be left alone in the classroom or outside the building. All notes for absence should be written to the teacher s attention. Parents will be notified if we need to cancel a class due to inclement weather. This will be done on the internet at stpeterschuchny.com. Scroll down to the religious education page for information. Please do not call the office. Para asegurar el bien de los estudiantes, pedimos a los padres que vengan a buscar a los niños después de las horas de clase. Por favor, acudan a las aulas de clase y firmen la hoja antes de sacar a su hijo(a) de la clase. Si quieren sacar a sus hijos de la clase con anticipación, hay que escribir una nota pidiendo permiso e indicando la hora, la fecha y la persona responsable para recogerlos. Si nadie viene a buscar a los niños, pedimos que reporten con el director de la catequesis o su asistente para que se pongan en comunicación con los padres. Sexual Abuse Class / Clase de Abuso Sexual In order to protect your child, we will be offering a session on child abuse once a year during the class time. If you would prefer that your son/daughter not participate in this session, please let the director of religious education know of your decision. Parent sessions will be offered once a year with the intent of educating you, the parent as to ways that you can help protect your children from child abuse. Para proteger a sus hijos, cada año vamos a ofrecer una clase que toca el tema del abuso sexual. Si usted prefiere que su hijo(a) no participe en esta clase hay que avisar al director de la catequesis. Cada año vamos a ofrecerles a ustedes, los padres, sesiones en inglés y en español para ayudarles a aprender cómo se puede proteger a sus hijos del abuso sexual. Les esperamos a estas sesiones. 5

6 Emergency Procedures Casos de Emergencia In case of fire, a bomb threat or an unforeseen storm, the teachers will direct the students how to evacuate the building. Parents will be notified to come and pick up their children. For this reason it is of utmost importance that we have the parent s telephone numbers, work numbers and cell phone numbers on file in the office so that they can be contacted immediately. If an accident occurs, the director should be notified immediately and parents will be notified without delay. Si hay un incendio, una amenaza o una tormenta inesperada, los catequistas guiarán a los estudiantes a salir del edificio y se les notificará a los padres que vengan a buscar a sus hijos.
