We are very proud to be a Detroit Public School. Please note that transportation for students is not provided. Before completing an application, we want to make sure that all parents understand our educational program so they may make an informed decision. The Academy of the Americas Dual-Language Immersion program is a 90/10 model. This means that the target language in the lower grades is Spanish. As the student progresses through the grades, English instruction is increased until fifth grade where students are instructed 50% in Spanish and 50% in English. The goal is for students to progress through the program performing at grade-level in both Spanish and English thus becoming functionally bi-lingual and bi-literate individuals. Our goal is also to have a population of students with equal numbers of dominant English speakers as well as dominant Spanish speakers. Since the target language is Spanish in the earlier grades, parents of English dominant students must recognize that language acquisition in Spanish will be gradual and that the student might struggle initially. However, with the support of the school and the parents, students can gain the skills necessary to become successful in both languages. We will do everything possible to support you and your child during this journey. Please read the program description below so that you may determine if this is an appropriate educational setting for your child(ren): Preschool: The preschool program is High Scope. This program is very experiential and students engage in many hands on activities throughout the day. The classrooms have a mixed language group with some dominant Spanish and some dominant English speaking students. It is very language based and the teacher engages students in Spanish half the day, and English the other half. Students are language role models for each other. Students begin a foundational understanding of the second language at this stage by learning to communicate needs and gaining vocabulary through songs, rhymes and other language activities. Kindergarten and First Grade: (Instruction is 90% Spanish/10% English) Kindergarten begins our Dual Language Immersion program. The target language is Spanish. Students receive all content instruction in Spanish with daily English as a Second Language (ESL) or Spanish as a Second Language (SSL) instruction. Second Grade: (Instruction is 80% Spanish/20%English) Second grade continues the progression with 80% of instruction in Spanish and 20% in English. These ratios also include a daily ESL or SSL class depending on the student s dominant language.

2 Third Grade: (Instruction is 70% Spanish 30% English) In third grade students receive 70% of their instruction in Spanish, 30% in English and an ESL or SSL class depending on their dominant language. Fourth Grade: (Instruction is 60% Spanish 40% English) Mathematics is taught in Spanish. English Language Arts in taught in English. Science and Social Studies are taught in both languages interchanging by units and themes. Fifth Grade: (Instruction is 50% Spanish and 50% English) Mathematics is taught in Spanish. English Language Arts in taught in English. Science and Social Studies are taught in both languages interchanging by units and themes. 6 th -8 th grades: In the sixth through eighth grades students are place in heterogeneous groups with the classrooms comprised of both dominant English and dominant Spanish speakers. They receive daily instruction in language arts in both Spanish and English. All other content areas are taught in English. Students receive ESL and SSL instruction based on their language of dominance. 9 th -10 th grade: (At least 2 periods are taught in Spanish) Please note it is not recommended for English dominant students to enter the program beyond Kindergarten due to challenges that the program could present for student language acquisition and learning. Segundo Grado: (La Instrucción es 80% español/20% Inglés) Segundo grado continúa paulatinamente con el 80% de instrucción en español y 20% en inglés. Diariamente también incluye ESL o SSL instrucción, dependiendo del idioma que domina el estudiante.

5 Application Process for the School Year We are currently accepting applications for students in grades PK-9. Priority will be given to those applicants who submit the application packet by the end of April, Applicants with siblings at AoA will also receive first consideration. Other applications will be processed in the order in which they are received. In the application packet parents and students must agree to support our mission and follow the tenets of the school. Please include the following with your application: 1. Copy of the official last report card for the student 2. Copy of the most recent MEAP assessments (grades 3-8) 3. A completed application and enrollment form The application packet including all documents can be hand delivered to the office or sent by US mail to: Academy of the Americas Attn: Cynde Garza 5680 Konkel Detroit, MI Your application will be reviewed and parents will be contacted within one week by mail and phone. Upon Admission When a student is accepted, parents of students entering Kindergarten must attend a mandatory meeting at which time the school s Dual Language Immersion program will be described in detail. These meetings will be conducted three times in the spring the dates will be coming forth soon to ensure that all parents can attend. Upon receiving the acceptance letter, a parent can attend any of the meetings. Please bring your acceptance letter with you. After the presentation the parent can determine if the program meets their need. It is important that all parents are able to hear the information so please do not bring small children.
