1 ACTIVIDAD 1- ESCUDO DE ARMAS Historia La Reina Isabel y el Rey Fernando habían acordado aceptar las demandas de Colón si tenía éxito en su primer viaje. Las condiciones eran que él sería dado el rango de caballero y nombrado Almirante del Mar Océano. También le cederían el virreinato y gobierno de las tierras descubiertas. Tendría derecho a una décima parte de la riqueza obtenida. Colón obtuvo un Escudo de Armas en Él decidió añadirle al tradicional escudo de Castilla y Aragón su propio toque. Así fue como le añadió un continente junto a las islas y cinco anclas doradas que representaban su cargo como Almirante del Mar Océano. Materiales 1. Papel de Construcción 2. Dibujo del Escudo de Armas de Colón Source: 3. Dibujo de un Escudo de Armas talla 8x10 4. Materiales para pintar: marcadores, acuarelas, crayones o lápices de colores 5. Goma de pegar 6. Tijeras
2 Instrucciones 1. Pedirles a los estudiantes que corten el Escudo de Armas sin pintar que se les ha proporcionado. 2. Los estudiantes deben pegar el escudo de armas en una hoja de papel de construcción. 3. Los estudiantes van a dibujar en el primer panel vacío el sueño más grande que tienen para triunfar en la vida. En el caso de Colon su visión era el continente americano desprendiéndose de las islas americanas. 4. En el segundo panel vacíolos estudiantes deben dibujar un objeto que los representa como les gustaría ser recordados. En el caso de Colon era el de Almirante del Mar Océano. Por eso decidió pintar las anclas como símbolo de su estatus social. 5. Pedirle a cada estudiante que escriba en español una breve descripción de cada panel. Y que escriba el titulo de Almirante como le gustaría ser recordado. 6. Los estudiantes comparten su escudo de armas con la clase Actividades en Grupos Pequeños 1. Divida a los alumnos en grupos de cuatro 2. Pedir a cada grupo que llegue a un consenso del dibujo que quieren hacer en cada panel 3. Cada grupo crea un escudo de armas para su panel. 4 Cada grupo expresa en español su idea para cada panel. Las ideas son colocadas en el tablero 5. La clase elige el Escudo de Armas que mejor representa la clase. Tarea 1- El maestro crea en una cartulina un afiche con el título "SUEÑOS" usando las ideas presentadas por la clase. Luego crea otro afiche con el título " SÍMBOLOS" usando las ideas de la clase 2. Esta lista se puede ir agrandando a medida que los alumnos aprendan más vocabulario para incluir como, profesiones, gustos, pasatiempos y emociones. This list can be expanded as the students learn more vocabulary to include potential careers, likes and dislikes and emotions. 3. El maestro puede mantener la lista y usarla el año próximo para compararla con la nueva clase y hallar cosas similares y distintas entre ambos años. Muy útil en Middle School donde los estudiantes tienen el mito que séptimo y octavo grado son muy distintos.

4 ENGLISH VERSION ACTIVITY 1- COAT OF ARMS Background Queen Isabella and King Ferdinard had agreed to Columbus demands if he succeeded on his first voyage. The demands were that he would become a knight, appointed Admiral of the Ocean Sea, made viceroy of the new land and awarded ten percent of the total wealth derived from the discovery. Columbus was granted a Coat of Arms in He decided to modify the original design of the coat of arms of Castilla and Aragón by adding his personal touch. He added an emerging continent next to islands and five golden anchors to represent his appointment as Admiral of the Ocean Sea. Materials 1. Construction Paper 2. Picture of Columbus' Coat of Arms Source: 3. Coat of Arms Handout 4. Coloring materials 5. Glue & Scissors
5 Instructions 1. Ask students to cut the Coat of Arms. 2. Glue Coat of Arms to construction paper for reinforcement. 3. Ask students to draw on the left side of the coat of arms the biggest dream that they have to succeed in life. In Columbus case it was the vision of the American continent next to the islands. 4. In the right side of the coat of the arms, they need to draw a picture of a symbol that represents them. Columbus' symbols were the golden anchors that showed his status as Admiral of the Ocean Sea. Students can also give themselves a Spanish title if desired. 5. Each student should write a little description in Spanish of each panel. Students should become and Admiral of his/her symbol. Using their dictionaries students should give themselves a Spanish title. Columbus title was Admiral of the Ocean Sea. 6. Students share their Coat of Arms with the class. Small Group Activities 1. Divide the class in groups of four students 2. Ask each group to create a Coat of Arms that describes the group. 3. Each group describes each side of the panel. They also create a Spanish Title for each member and include all symbols from their members in the Coat of Arms. 4 Each group presents their Coat of Arms. 5. Class selects their favorite Coat of Arms Follow-up 1- Teacher can create a list in the board called SUEÑOS and another list of SIMBOLOS for all the students in the class. 2. This list can be expanded as the students learns more vocabulary to include potential careers, likes and dislikes and emotions. 3- Teacher can keep the list and the following year use it to compare and create a list of SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES between the current year class and the prior year students.
