4 Irregular verbs All verbs conjugate. Irregular verbs have an additional spelling change when they conjugate. Three categories of irregular verbs: Stem-changing verbs A vowel in the stem will change in all forms except the "nosotros/vosotros" Irregular "yo" verbs Just the "yo" form has a spelling change Very irregular verbs All forms change drastically when conjugated. These are very useful verbs that must be memorized.

22 Irregular Verbs, Stem-Changing Verbs: e ie, e i, o ue All verbs have two parts: HABLAR Habl -ar CONOCER Conoc -er SEGUIR Segu -ir

23 Some verbs in Spanish undergo changes in their stem when conjugated. These changes occur only in the singular and the 3rd person plural conjugations. When a line is drawn around the forms that change, the resulting shape vaguely resembles a boot; thus, these verbs are sometimes called boot verbs. There are three types of boot verbs.

24 Type 1: e ie We ll use entender, to understand, as an example of this type. entender entiendo entiendes entiende entendemos entendéis entienden

25 Here are some other common e ie verbs: empezar, comenzar pensar (+ infinitive) perder preferir querer to begin to think; to plan (to do something) to lose to prefer to want, to love

29 The verb jugar, to play (games or sports), follows the same pattern as o ue verbs, but the change is u ue. jugar juego juegas juega jugamos jugáis juegan

30 Here are some other common o ue verbs: costar* dormir encontrar poder recordar soñar (con) volver to cost to sleep to find to be able; can to remember to dream (about) to return, to come back *Costar is normally used only in the third person.
