1 June 2017 GEETINGS FROM PROMOTORES TEAM PROMOTORES PositivaMente Newsletter of the Month Last month, Promotores held the Farm Labor Housing Community Resource Fair. The event took place at the grounds of FLH in Gridley. The purpose of this fair was to reduce the barriers of accessing services by bringing community partners together to support the residents of this community. This was a family-friendly event that combined fun activities for children and their families. The following organizations collaborated with Promotores to make the event a success: Ampla Health, Butte College, Catalyst, E- Center Head Start, NVCSS-TAPP, Promotores Regional, and Butte Baby Steps; UCCE-Nutrition, Butte County Public Library, Literacy Coach, E-Aprende, Far Northern Regional Center, Luz y Esperanza Support Group, Victor Services, Butte Child Abuse, Migrant Education Program, Nancy Bryant Inmigration Service, and EDD. Thank you all for being part of this event. SALUDOS DEL EQUIPO DE PROMOTORES El mes pasado, Promotores organizó la Feria de Recursos Comunitarios para Farm Labor Housing. El evento tuvo lugar en los terrenos de FLH en Gridley. 2 The Importance of Positive Male Role Models 2 Many boys today do not know what it means to be a man because they don t have a man in their lives. Sadly, children will go to bed tonight without saying goodnight to their father because he just isn t there. Nearly one-fourth of America s children live in mother-only families. Of the children living with their mothers, 35 percent never see their father and 24 percent see their fathers less than once a month. These children live with a woman and more than likely, they are taught by a woman at school. Where do they see and interact with positive male role models? Or, if they are a boy, how do they learn what it means to be a man? Even in homes where the father is present, research shows that the average father spends less than 10 minutes a day oneon-one with his child. In our society, emotional and spiritual fatherlessness is becoming the norm. Many of today s fathers did not have positive role models to show them what it meant to be a father, so they are not there to show their children what it means to be a father. No matter how great a mother is, she cannot replace what a father provides to a child. Irrefutable research shows that mothers typically are nurturing, soft, gentle, comforting, protective and emotional. Fathers tend to encourage risk-taking and to be challenging, prodding, loud, playful and physical. Children need a balance of protection and reasonable risktaking. If a positive male role model is not present in the life of a child, there is a void in this area. Children who live in this environment are more likely to be involved in criminal activity, premarital sexual activity, do poorer in school and participate in unhealthy activities. Studies have shown that involvement of a father or a positive male role model has profound effects on children. Father-child interaction promotes a child s physical well-being, perceptual ability and competency for relating with others. These children also demonstrate greater ability to take initiative and evidence self-control. Every child needs someone who is absolutely crazy about them. Let s make sure they have that person. By: How can you make a positive difference for these children? A mother can encourage positive male role model involvement in her child s life. Non-custodial dads can make the effort to visit with their children more often and be intentional about teaching them important life lessons. Educators can encourage fathers to be more active in the classroom. Positive male role models can influence the lives of children in their communities. Faith-based institutions and programs can bring fathers together with their children and also encourage male role models to be involved with children in their sphere of influence. Business leaders can encourage employee involvement in community efforts such as mentoring, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, youth groups, Boys Club or Girls Inc.

By: Una de las mayores expectativas en la educación de los hijos es ayudarles a formar una imagen positiva de sí mismos. Sentirse capaces, experimentarse como seres valiosos, competentes y merecedores de logros, son la base de una personalidad sana y equilibrada y, por lo mismo, del éxito en la vida. Numerosos estudios concluyen que la presencia activa y estable del padre y una relación cercana con este tienen un gran impacto sobre la formación de la autoestima de los hijos, porque satisface necesidades psicológicas profundas de los niños y adolescentes, que responden a tres preguntas fundamentales: Quién soy?, a qué pertenezco? y de qué soy capaz? El padre tiene un papel fundamental en la construcción de la identidad en los hijos. Es el primer modelo de hombre que tienen y cuando esta identificación tiene lugar de manera adecuada, los niños y jóvenes tienen mayores posibilidades de estructurar plenamente su identidad masculina o femenina. La imagen que un niño tiene de sí mismo está muy vinculada con el concepto que el padre tiene de él. En general, los padres son más pragmáticos y tienen una imagen más realista de sus hijos, con sus cualidades y limitaciones. Cuando los padres toman el tiempo suficiente para hablar y escuchar a sus hijos y están conectados emocionalmente con ellos, estos se sienten valorados, importantes y tenidos en cuenta, y experimentan una sensación percibida de apoyo y soporte. De otro lado, el padre también imparte disciplina con más firmeza que la madre (los niños perciben inconscientemente a su padre como una figura con mayor autoridad). Si esta se ejerce de manera equilibrada, los hijos asimilan claramente las normas de comportamiento, tienen más autocontrol y tolerancia y sobrellevan mejor la frustración. Existe una estrecha relación entre un papel activo del padre y una mayor capacidad de los hijos para administrar positivamente los éxitos y los fracasos, defender los derechos y posturas propias, atender de manera positiva a sus necesidades y enfrentar efectivamente las dificultades. 3

5 GRUPOS DE APOYO Mutual Support Groups Programa de Paternidad con Cariño Este grupo fue diseñado para ayudar a padres, abuelos y figuras paternas a desarrollar habilidades para la paternidad ya que esta ayuda a mejorar el crecimiento de los padres. Así como también cultivan y apoyan la esperanza que beneficia las relaciones familiares del hombre, la mujer y sus hijos. Duración de 12 semanas. The Nurturing Father s Program This group was designed to help parents, grandparents, and father figures develop their parenting skills as it enhances the growth and well being of men and children. Groups will cultivate and support hope that benefits the family relationships of men, women and their children. Duration of 12 weeks. Crianza con Cariño El programa está diseñado para capacitar a las personas y familias con nuevas conocimientos, creencias de vida, estrategias, y habilidades para para tomar estilos de vida buenos y saludables. Programa de corta duración de 5 a 18 sesiones, con certificación. Nurturing Parenting Program is designed to empower individuals and families with new knowledge, beliefs, strategies and skills to make good and healthy lifestyle choices. Short-term program of approximately 5 to 18 sessions. Participants receive a certificate at the end of the program. Women Self-Esteem A healthy self-esteem gives us benefits for our health and our quality of life. It allows us to develop creativity, enhance personal capacities, and face the problems and difficulties of life more effectively. This group will focus on developing a support system, getting more concentration through the use of music, diet, light, relaxation exercises and achieving a good night's sleep to improve their self-esteem and personal well-being. 5
