Students are not permitted to remain in areas around the school after they have completed their exams. 2 I. ENGLISH LANGUAGE: 10 TH GRADE EFL Teacher: Erica Leary Reading. Candidates read a text and answer a series of questions testing detailed comprehension. In preparation for the 1st term examination students should study all class notes, journals and discussions. They should also review the 2014 Coursebook, Workbook and Grammar material we have studied so far. This year's exam will have the following format: Grammar / Sentences. Choose the correct answer. Correct the sentences for sentence structure. Up to 15 marks available for correct answers. Summarise: Your summary must be in continuous writing of words. (full sentences; not note form). Use your own words as far as possible. Aim to write no more than one side in total, allowing for the size of your handwriting. Up to 15 marks are available for the content of your answer, and up to 5 marks for the quality of your writing. Composition. Narrative Writing. Write about two sides, allowing for the size of your handwriting A PDF guide is also available from Cambridge at: cambridge-learner-guide-for-igcse-first-language-english.pdf 10 TH GRADE ESL CORE Teacher : Ammar Comprehension- Skim and scan the text Examine relevant information from text and find factual details (C/W: Week beginning 15 April 2017) Note-taking exercise: Use bullet points at the beginning of each line and write short answers that fit the space on the line. Although your answer must be short, make sure you include all the key information Write a summary: Remember no introduction or conclusion and use linking words to write a summary. Include all the key facts, this will mean looking again at the entire text and underlining relevant points. If you use your own words instead of copying from the text, you have more chance of getting a higher mark. 2
3 Write a longer piece - Directed writing, always check what is the task? a letter, an etc. Check that it is the right length and remember to have paragraphs. Answer the question don t forget to answer any bullet points. Also, be careful to check your spelling, grammar and punctuation and lastly the writing must be clear to read so keep your handwriting tidy. Review Simple, Compound, & Complex Sentences For Compound sentences remember Fanboys (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) For Complex sentences remember ABE IS TUW (Subordinating Conjunction) a. after, as, before, because, besides, even though, even if, if, since, though, unless, upon, until, when, wherever, while, whenever, whether Revise Past/Present simple and Past/Present Continuous You will be assessed on both Content & Quality of Writing: paragraphs, spelling, punctuation, sentences and vocabulary. Finally, your handwriting must be legible. 10 TH GRADE ESL EXT Teachers:John Coffroth, Sonia Ortiz and Esmeralda Singh In preparation for the 1st term examination students should study all class notes, journals and discussions. They should also review the Coursebook, Workbook and grammar material we have studied so far. SECTION ONE : GRAMMAR (ACTIVE GRAMMAR BK 3) Study Material: English as a First Language Coursebook and Workbook (Unit 9 12) Notebooks, (All class notes, discussions, activities and assignments) Exam Reading exercise 1 Students will read a short text and answer a series of questions testing skim-/gist-reading skills. Reading exercise 2 Students will address major themes, character analysis and be able to respond to passages. Reading exercise 3 Students will write a summary about an aspect or aspects of the passage. Note Taking exercise Students will prepare note related to aspect or aspects of the passage Form exercise Students will fill out a form based upon passage information. 3
4 Summary writing. Candidates write a summary about an aspect or aspects of the passage. Writing prompt Students will write in response to a short stimulus (which may take the form of pictures) and/or short prompts printed on the paper. The question includes information on the purpose, format and audience.
