Gobernando mi mundo Unidad 6 The Imperfect Subjunctive H.O. #17 ALMOST everything that you have learned about the Subjunctive is still true for the Imperfect Subjunctive: all of the subjunctive triggers are the same and even the formula (1 st subject + 1 st verb + que + 2 nd subject + 2 nd verb) is still the same. What is different is the context of time and the irregulars. Use the Imperfect Subjunctive when the context of the sentence is in the past! Remember that the imperfect tense is considered a past tense. Present Subjunctive Compare the following Imperfect Subjunctive Los ciudadanos esperan que el ejercito luche contra las injusticias. El gobernador sugiere que nosotros promovamos el bienestar de la gente. Los ciudadanos esperaban que el ejercito luchara contra las injusticias. El gobernador sugirió que nosotros promoviéramos el bienestar de la gente. I. To form the Imperfect Subjunctive, begin with the «ellos/ellas/ustedes» form of the preterite tense! Drop the ron and add the following endings: ra, ras, ra, ramos, ran. These endings are the same for all three types of infinitives: ar,er, & ir and for the irregular verbs as well. 2 II. Conjugate the following verbs in the Imperfect Subjunctive. Remember, only ir verbs stemchange in the preterite tense and therefore these same verbs will continue to stemchange in the imperfect subjunctivestemchange to a single vowel only (e i / o u). If a verb is irregular in the ellos/ellas/uds form of the preterite, like the verb ir (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron), it will also be irregular in the Imperfect Subjunctive (fuera, fueras, fuera, fuéramos, fueran). IV. Translate the following sentences using the Preterite or Imperfect in the first clause and the Imperfect Subjunctive in the second clause. Remember the elements that ALL of the Subjunctives require: 1 st Subject + 1 st Verb + que + 2 nd Subject + 2 nd Verb Preterite / Different than Imperfect Imperfect 1 st Subj Subjunctive Note: The imperfect subjunctive disguises itself in English as a present tense verb, an infinitive, the preterite tense, or uses could/would + verb. 1. The mayor always demanded (exigir) that we plan for the future. 2. Last night, the president insisted that I pay my taxes. 3. The representative suggested that the citizens educate the public. 4.
