9 El desierto: un camino difícil, pero necesario Marcos 1, Petición Señor, concédeme saber escuchar tu Palabra y hacerla vida en mi vida. Reflexión Cruzado el umbral del miércoles de Ceniza, nos encontramos ya en pleno período cuaresmal. El Evangelio de hoy es muy cortito, pero muy rico de significado. Vale la pena detenernos un momento en la primera frase: "El Espíritu empujó a Jesús al desierto, y se quedó en el desierto cuarenta días". Esto es la Cuaresma: 40 días de desierto! La palabra "cuaresma" deriva del latín: "quadragesima", que quiere decir precisamente "cuarenta". El pueblo cristiano desde siempre ha vivido con especial intensidad este período, que precede a la celebración anual de los misterios de la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Este tiempo evoca antiguos acontecimientos bíblicos de gran simbolismo espiritual: 40 fueron los años de peregrinación del pueblo de Israel por el desierto hacia la tierra prometida; 40 los días de permanencia de Moisés en el monte Sinaí, en pleno desierto, en donde Dios renovó la alianza con su pueblo y le entregó las Tablas de la Ley; los días que recorrió Elías por el desierto hasta llegar a encontrarse con el Señor en el monte Horeb, también fueron 40; y 40 los días que nuestro Señor Jesucristo transcurrió en el desierto orando y ayunando, antes de iniciar su vida pública, que culminaría en el Calvario, en donde llevaría a término nuestra redención. para la búsqueda y el encuentro personal con Dios en la oración, en el silencio del alma y en la soledad de las creaturas. El libro del profeta Oseas nos ofrece un pasaje muy hermoso a este propósito: Dios habla al pueblo de Israel como a su esposa del alma, que ha sido infiel a su promesa de amor; y la conduce al desierto para renovar con ella su pacto de amor y fidelidad: "Por eso, yo voy a seducirla y la llevaré al desierto - dice el Señor- y le hablaré al corazón... y allí cantará como cantaba en los días de su juventud" (Os 2, 16-17). El desierto se nos presenta como el lugar más apropiado para el encuentro con el Dios del amor y de la alianza. El ambiente exterior favorece el recogimiento e invita a la oración. Por eso, antiguamente, los monjes se retiraban al desierto para hablar y unirse con Dios; a los primeros eremitas y anacoretas se les llamó con el sugestivo nombre de "padres del desierto". Pero el desierto no es poesía, y no hay que interpretarlo en una clave meramente intimista. Es arduo y difícil, pero necesario. Y nuestra vida cristiana tiene que pasar necesariamente por el desierto. Es decir, por la experiencia del silencio y de la soledad, del desprendimiento de las cosas materiales, del sacrificio y, sobre todo, de la oración y del encuentro íntimo y personal con Dios. Más aún, todo lo anterior es sólo como una preparación para que el alma se encuentre a sus anchas con su Creador. A muchos hombres y mujeres del siglo XXI estas palabras podrían tal vez resultar incómodas, y hasta incomprensibles. Y no es de extrañar. Pero es un camino por el que tenemos que entrar si queremos llegar a la Vida. La coincidencia numérica es interesante. Pero mucho más significativo aún es el marco geográfico en el que tienen lugar todos estos acontecimientos: el desierto. En la literatura bíblica aparece muy a menudo el tema del desierto, no sólo como un lugar físico, sino también como un simbolismo de carácter espiritual. Parecería que Dios tuviera una predilección especial por este escenario para llevar a cabo sus obras de salvación. Vayamos juntos al desierto y veámoslo. Se trata de un lugar árido e inhóspito. No hay nada, ni lo más elemental. Allí se sufre todo tipo de incomodidades: la sed y el calor, las inclemencias del tiempo, los cambios bruscos de temperatura, las molestias de la arena, las privaciones y carencias materiales no ya de las cosas fútiles, sino también incluso de las más necesarias. El desierto es un paraje solitario y silencioso. Es lo opuesto al ruido y a la algarabía, al consumismo, a la molicie, a la vida fácil y placentera de nuestras ciudades modernas. Es para gente austera y templada. Por eso, la realidad física del desierto puede ser como un símbolo de la vida espiritual: es el lugar del desprendimiento de todo lo superfluo; una invitación a la austeridad y al retorno a lo esencial. Es allí en donde el hombre experimenta su fragilidad y sus propias limitaciones; el lugar de la prueba y de la purificación. Pero también el escenario más apropiado Sin embargo, todos los seres humanos -independientemente de nuestro credo, cultura, edad, sexo o condición socialabsolutamente todos, tenemos nuestras horas arduas de aridez y de cansancio, de fatiga y de derrota; de soledad, de sufrimiento, de desolación y de ceguera interior. Y todo esto es también el desierto. Y estas horas amargas pueden ser sinónimo de fecundidad y de vida si sabemos vivirlas unidos a Dios. Entonces sí, el desierto será el camino que nos lleve hasta la tierra prometida, el lugar privilegiado para el encuentro con Dios y el escenario de nuestra redención al lado de Cristo. La experiencia del desierto nos conducirá al gozo pascual de la resurrección. Propósito Transmitir, a quienes me rodean, el gozo y la serenidad que se experimenta al confiar en la misericordia de Dios. Diálogo con Cristo Jesucristo, al contemplar las tentaciones con las que Dios Padre permitió que fueras tentado, confirmo que nunca debo aspirar a no tener tentaciones sino a saber superarlas con fe y confianza, preparándome permanentemente con la mejor arma: la oración; porque ante la tentación, nunca me faltará la gracia ni la fortaleza del Espíritu Santo. Padre mío, que sepa llevar este mensaje a los demás, especialmente aquellos que están deprimidos y angustiados por lo duro de esta vida.
