Page 3 www.stritaparish.org October August 21, 26, 2018 FROM THE This Sunday we PRIESTS DESK continue to read from the section of Mark s Gospel that reports Jesus journey to Jerusalem. Last Sunday we heard Jesus lament the particular challenges those with many possessions face in order to enter the Kingdom of God. He then predicts his passion to the Twelve, who are amazed and afraid. In this part of Mark s Gospel, Jesus words to his closest disciples seem to be intended to prepare them for the events that will occur in Jerusalem. Today, James and John ask to be given seats of honor when Jesus enters into his glory. Once again, the disciples seem to be selective in what they hear Jesus say. They want to share his glory, but do not appear to understand that his glory will be preceded by his suffering. Jesus notes their lack of understanding and predicts the suffering they will endure for the sake of the Gospel. Then he says that the honor they seek is not his to give. Jesus explains the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community. Christ Jesus contrasts the dynamics within the community of disciples with those shown by the rulers of the Gentiles. We might take this opportunity to consider our models of authority and examine our own exercise of authority. On whose example do we model our leadership? loyolapress.com Del Escritorio Este domingo Del Sacerdote leemos de San Marcos detalles que describen el viaje de Jesús hacia Jerusalén.

Page 4 www.stritaparish.org October 21, 2018 UN DOMINGO PARA AYUDAR A TODO EL MUNDO ONE SUNDAY TO HELP THE WHOLE WORLD TODOS LOS AÑOS SUCEDE ALGO ESPECIAL el penúl mo domingo de octubre. EVERY YEAR, SOMETHING SPECIAL HAPPENS on the next-to-last Sunday of October. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY joins all Catholics of the world all of us children of God into one community of faith. At Mass that Sunday, we recommit ourselves to our common voca on, through Bap sm, to be missionaries, through prayer, par cipa on in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collec on for the Society for the Propaga on of the Faith. This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission Sunday message to us as we live out the adventure of being children of God. What a wonderful way to imagine the mission we have received from the Lord! It is a revitalizing adventure. When all the children of God, at every stage of life, reflect on the fact that our lives are a mission, our faith remains ever young. As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebra ons taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with children of God in every corner of the globe, we become voices for mission, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communi es in the Pope s missions. In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as children of God, His missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses. h p://www.usccb.org/about/na onal-collec ons/wmsresources.cfm
