Our school district s Vision Statement Learning for Life Building Partnerships for Success is the cornerstone for our educational programs as well as the relationships that are fostered among all stakeholders. As we strive for educational excellence, we encourage a sense of open communication and trust. To that end, we invite all parents to contact any of our staff should they have any concerns about their child s education. It is through open communication that concerns are addressed and partnerships are strengthened. Strong partnerships among students, parents and educators form the positive relationships that are critical to student success in school. Once again, welcome back and have a great school year! Dear Families, Our school year is off to a wonderful start! On August 12 th, 2015, we welcomed 181 sixth grade, 157 seventh grade, and 144 eighth grade students into our building to begin a new year of learning. We are looking forward to an outstanding year, one which is filled with student growth, both in and out of the classroom. Although school has only been in session for a few weeks, I hope that your family has had the opportunity to spend some time talking about early school experiences. The year began with a rigorous effort in classroom instruction. However, communication of progress has been hampered by growing pains with technologies. We continue to work on resolving PowerSchool and new phone system issues. I apologize for these inconveniences and appreciate your patience. Fortunately, these issues do not impact the classroom experience! If problems persist, please email me directly so that I can assist in the process of providing you with technical support. In addition to quality instruction, we began the year with an emphasis on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a school-wide program for creating a safer and more effective school with increased time focused on teaching and learning. It is a systems-based approach for enhancing the effectiveness of schools in educating students by utilizing explicit teaching of behavioral standards. The purpose statement for PBIS at MMS consists of the following: Maintain a positive, safe culture and climate in our classrooms, school, and community Encourage the growth and development in school for all students and staff Establish consistency among all teachers and staff Use data to guide our decision making Increase instructional time by implementing school wide procedures and standards Strengthen school and family partnerships The universal expectation will be the context of recognizing and celebrating student behavior. In fact, your child most likely has earned Mustang Pride tickets that can be used for special raffles or the Mustang Mercantile. We are excited about the benefits we have seen through the utilization of PBIS over the past several years. Ultimately, PBIS has a strong correlation to academic achievement. On Thursday, September 3 rd, our students will start taking the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test in the areas of Reading and Mathematics. Beginning this year, we will attempt to test all students in one online session. This change will decrease loss of instructional time in the classroom. Data collected from these assessments will be used to help direct and differentiate classroom instruction to meet your child s needs. Shortly after the completion of the fall testing window, a report sharing student progress will be sent home. If you have any questions regarding your child s report, please feel free to contact your child s teacher or myself. After school activities are now in full swing. Girls basketball, boys soccer, and cross country have already started practicing and are preparing to compete against other conference schools. Our OWLS club is ready to begin preservation and conservation efforts on school grounds, and our Strategist Club is recruiting new members. If your child has not joined a club or targeted one or more activity, please review the many opportunities scheduled throughout the school year. Historically, 70% of MMS students participate in one club or organization. Finally, I want to thank the Parent Teacher Organization, students, and families for their fundraising efforts last year. With the support of the PTO, we were we able to secure additional technology, such as document cameras, to enhance our learning environments. In addition, the PTO sponsored school assemblies and provided financial assistance to supplement school field trips. I would encourage all parents to join the PTO and get involved in some of the exciting initiatives that are being planned this year. Also, be on the lookout for Fall Fundraiser Packets and materials that were sent home with your students earlier this week! I am looking forward to this school year and working with all of you and your children. If you have any ideas, comments, questions, or thoughts you want to share, please don t hesitate to contact me via phone (847) 526-6210, or email me at btaterka@d118.org. Sincerely, Mr. Robert Taterka

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Matthews Middle School has adopted PBIS to help our students become more responsible, respectful, and safe citizens here at Matthews and in our community. On August 12 th, we kicked off the year with videos, classroom experiences, and a celebration to reinforce the behavioral expectations when students are on the bus and at school. This year we have added a new layer to our PBIS program called the Mustang Pride Program (MP2). MP2 is a more user friendly version of our Check In Check Out program. The goal is to help students to quickly acclimate to the school environment, connect with adults, and become more self-aware of their school behaviors. Every Thursday, during lunches, we offer the Mustang Mercantile. Students are welcome to trade in their Mustang Madness Tickets for items in the mercantile. Any student who is interested in becoming a Mercantile Manager can attend a meeting every Thursday during homeroom with Mrs. Krieger in room 131. Last year we had over 40 students volunteer to be Mercantile Managers (put that on their resumes ). Our first dance this year will celebrate the PBIS program on Friday, September 28 th from 6-8pm. On Friday, October 9th the students will be celebrating their first quarter achievements. This event will be in response to analysis of our current data trends. If you have any questions regarding the PBIS program please contact either Mr. Grandt (x2612) or Mr. Taterka (x2500). Mustangs are respectful, responsible, and safe. Yee hahhh!
