6. Gobernando mi mundo Unidad 6 The Imperfect Subjunctive H.O. #17 ALMOST everything that you have learned about the Subjunctive is still true for the Imperfect Subjunctive: all of the subjunctive triggers are the same and even the formula (1 st subject + 1 st verb + que + 2 nd subject + 2 nd verb) is still the same. What is different is the context of time and the irregulars. Use the Imperfect Subjunctive when the context of the sentence is in the past! Remember that the imperfect tense is considered a past tense. Present Subjunctive Compare the following Imperfect Subjunctive Los ciudadanos esperan que el ejercito luche contra las injusticias. El gobernador sugiere que nosotros promovamos el bienestar de la gente. Los ciudadanos esperaban que el ejercito luchara contra las injusticias. El gobernador sugirió que nosotros promoviéramos el bienestar de la gente. I. To form the Imperfect Subjunctive, begin with the «ellos/ellas/ustedes» form of the preterite tense! Drop the ron and add the following endings: ra, ras, ra, ramos, ran. These endings are the same for all three types of infinitives: ar,er, & ir and for the irregular verbs as well. Be sure to use an accent mark on the vowel before adding ramos of the nosotros form. apoyar ganar votar abusar * * * * prometer defender convivir reducir * * * * 1

II. Conjugate the following verbs in the Imperfect Subjunctive. Remember, only ir verbs stemchange in the preterite tense and therefore these same verbs will continue to stemchange in the imperfect subjunctivestemchange to a single vowel only (e i / o u). Servir, Preferir, Sentirse, Seguir, Sugerir, Divertirse, Elegir, Pedir, Despedirse, Repetir, Conseguir, Vestirse, Morir, Dormir Servir Preferir Sentirse Seguir prefiriera siguiera nos sintiéramos sirvieran prefirieran siguieran Sugerir Divertirse Elegir Pedir Despedirse me despidiera pidieras nos despidiéramos Repetir Conseguir Vestirse Morir Dormir me vistiera murieras se vistieran durmieran III. If a verb is irregular in the ellos/ellas/uds form of the preterite, like the verb ir (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron), it will also be irregular in the Imperfect Subjunctive (fuera, fueras, fuera, fuéramos, fueran). Conjugate the following irregulars in the imperfect subjunctive. Ser/Ir Dar Ver Querer *fueron dieron vieron quisieron Hacer Venir Poner Poder hicieron vinieron pusieron pudieron 2

Saber *Decir *Traer *Conducir * * * supieron *dijeron *trajeron *condujeron Tener Estar Andar Fui Di Vi tuvieron estuvieron anduvieron Quise, Hice, Vine yo Puse, Pude, Supe yo *Dije, Traje, Conduje yo Tuve, Estuve, Anduve yo Pretérito, Irregular All: Ya yo se los verbos, olé! IV. Translate the following sentences using the Preterite or Imperfect in the first clause and the Imperfect Subjunctive in the second clause. Remember the elements that ALL of the Subjunctives require: 1 st Subject + 1 st Verb + que + 2 nd Subject + 2 nd Verb Preterite / Different than Imperfect Imperfect 1 st Subj Subjunctive Note: The imperfect subjunctive disguises itself in English as a present tense verb, an infinitive, the preterite tense, or uses could/would + verb. 1. The mayor always demanded (exigir) that we plan for the future. 2. Last night, the president insisted that I pay my taxes. 3. The representative suggested that the citizens educate the public. 4. Last year, the homeless hoped that everyone would fight against hunger. 3

5. The dictator wanted (enduringly) burocracy to abuse (the) power. 6. The king desired that the queen govern for a long time. 7. The candidate advised that I be in favor of (after a preposition, infinitive) promoting a strike. 8. The oppressor recommended that the government reduce the wellbeing of the people. 9. It was good that we protested against war. 10. It was a shame that he did not volunteer in the strike. V. Conjugate the following verbs in the 1) present subjunctive, 2) present perfect subjunctive, and 3) imperfect subjunctive. 1. Firmar 2. Firmar 3. Firmar firme haya firmado firmara 1. *Promover 2. *Promover 3. *Promover promuevas hayas promovido promovieras 1. Reducir 2. Reducir 3. Reducir reduzcamos hayamos reducido reduciéramos 4

VI. In the first blank, tell what form of the subjunctive you would use for each of the following sentences (present subjunctive, present perfect subjunctive or imperfect subjunctive). Translate the sentence in the longer line provided. Follow these formulas: 1 st Subject + _ 1 st Verb + que + 2 nd Subject + 2 nd Verb Present Different than Present Subjunctive or 1 st Subj Present Perfect Subjunctive 1 st Subject + 1 st Verb + que + 2 nd Subject + 2 nd Verb Preterite/ Different than Imperfect Imperfect 1 st Subj Subjunctive 12.
