The Meaning of Advent Candles As a Christian tradition, the wreath holds 4 Advent candles. The candles represent Jesus coming as the light in the darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all 4 candles are lit, and sometimes a 5th candle is lit on Christmas day. As Christmas draws nearer, each candle bring a little more light into the darkness. Each of the candles represent an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent: 1. The Candle of Hope is Purple. Within the Catholic Church it symbolizes penance, preparation and sacrifice. 2. The Candle of Peace is Purple. During this second week of Advent, we reflect on our lives and work on becoming better-version of ourselves in preparation for Jesus coming. 3. The Candle of Joy is Pink. This symbolizes anticipation and rejoicing. During the third week of Advent, we are filled with joy. 4. The Candle of Love is purple. During this final week of Advent we rejoice in the endless love that God has for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son. Tobit 4:11 Work is underway for Phase 2, and our Holy Cross family continues to grow. We hope these signs of progress are enough to deem pledging time, talents, and treasure, to the GIFT Campaign, a worthy offering for those parishioners who have not done so yet.
