1 Ideas for Studying Sight Words at Home 1. Play sight word Hang Man. Choose a word and draw blank lines for each letter (so if the word is this, you d draw ). The student guesses a letter. If the letter is in the word, write it on the appropriate blank. If the letter is not in the word, draw a man s head on a piece of paper. The next time the student guesses a letter that s not in the word, draw a body. Then an arm, then another arm, then a leg, and then another leg. If the student guesses the word before the whole man is drawn, s/he wins! If you d like to make this game a little less morbid, you can draw a cat (not hanging) instead of drawing a hanging man (if the student guesses the word before the whole cat is drawn, s/he wins!). 2. Create word searches with sight words. This website will create them for you! 3. Play BINGO with sight words. Draw a blank BINGO board and write sight words inside the boxes. Pull a sight word card out of a bag. If the word is on the student s BINGO board, s/he can color it in. The first person to color in all the words on the BINGO board wins! 4. Buy letter stickers at the 99 Cent Store and create sight words. 5. Play Slap It! Lay a group of sight words on the table or floor. Call out a word and students quickly slap the correct card before you do! 6. Use the word cards to create simple sentences. If a word comes up that s not a sight word, add another card or draw a picture to represent that word. 7. Practice writing the words with markers (make sure students are saying the word out loud while writing it!). 8. Write the words in finger paint.

2 9. "Sky write" the words (write them in the air while saying them out loud). 10. Make word puzzles by cutting the letters of a word up, mixing them up, and then putting them back in order. 12. Play OH OH! Sights words are written on index cards. Write OH OH! in big red letters on a few index cards (if you use 20 sight word cards, you should have about 5 OH OH! cards). Shuffle all the cards together and hold the deck face down. Two (or more) people take turns flipping over one card and reading it. If you know the word, you get to keep it. If you don t know it, you put it back in the deck. If you get an OH OH! card, you lose ALL your cards. The winner is the person with the most cards at the point you decide to stop playing. 13. Write the words in sand (make sure students are saying the word out loud while they write them!). 14. Students spell the words with pipe cleaners while reading them out loud. 15. Put a bunch of hair gel in a gallon- sized Ziploc bag. Tape around all the edges to make sure none of it leaks out. Students can use their fingers to write the sight words on top of the bag. 16. Play sight word Memory (also known as Concentration). Make doubles of all the sight words (so you need two cards that say the, two cards that say and, etc.). Mix up the cards and place them face down. Two players take turns flipping over two cards and reading both words. If the two words that are flipped are the same, that player gets to keep the cards and take another turn. The player with the most matches at the end of the game wins! 17. Play sight word Go Fish. Make doubles of all the sight words (so you need two cards that say the, two cards that say and, etc.).

3 Mix up the cards and deal five cards to each player. Place the rest of the cards face down in the middle of the players. The object is to find matches. Player 1 asks Player 2 if s/he has a specific card. It needs to be a card that Player 1 already holds (Example, Mom, do you have the word the?). If Player 2 does have the card, s/he must give it to Player 1. Player 1 then has a match, lays it down, and gets to go again. If Player 2 does not have the card, s/he says, Go fish! and Player 1 draws a card from the top of the pile that s in the middle. It s then Player 2 s turn to ask for a card. If a player runs out of cards, s/he can draw five more cards from the middle. The player with the most matches when all the cards are gone wins. 18. Play Sight Word Detective! Lay all the sight words face up on a table. Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight on one of the words. The student reads that word. 19. Play Sparkle (you need the whole family for this one). Everyone stands in a circle. One person calls out a word, and family members spell the word one letter at a time (so if the word is have, one person says h, the next person says a, the next person says v, and the next person says e ). Once the word is spelled, the next person says Sparkle! and sits down. Repeat with a different word (that person who was sitting stays seated). The last person standing wins. 20. Play Word Hunters. Give students a highlighter and have them search through newspapers and magazines for their sight words. 21. Put all sight words face down. Students choose a card and try to read it. If they can read it, they get to keep it. If they can t read it, the parent gets to keep it. Once the pile is gone, whoever has the most cards wins. You could also play this game with multiple students. They can take turn reading the cards. If one student can t read a word, the next student can steal that card by reading it correctly. 22. Play Slapjack. Make two copies of the sight words on index cards. Pick 1 word to be the magic word.

4 Each player gets half of the stack of cards. Both players put down one card facing up at the same time. If the magic word is this, then whenever you see the word this, the players race to slap the this card and say the word out loud. Players must say the word out loud. If a player doesn t say the word correctly, the other player gets the card. Whoever slaps the fastest wins both cards. Pick a different word to slap and continue. 23. Write the sight word with a couple letters missing. Students can fill in the missing letter with markers. 24. Spread shaving cream on a table and rub it into a circle. Students can use their fingers to write words in the shaving cream. 25. Students can write the sight word into pre- drawn boxes that match the shape of the word. For example, the boxes for the would be two tall rectangles (because t and h are tall letters) and one square (because e is a short letter). 26. Write sight words with your finger on your child s back. They guess what word you wrote and then write it themselves. 27. Build the words using ABC cereal or ABC noodles. Students can eat the word if they can read it! 28. Write the words on a big piece of paper. Call out a word and the child slaps the word with a fly swatter. Students can also make sentences by slapping words in different orders (for example, they can slap I first, then see, then the, and then call out cat so the sentence they created would be I see the cat. 29. Have students take a list of the words with them to the mall or market (or ANYWHERE because these words are EVERYWHERE). They can count how many times they see each of the words. They can wear special detective sunglasses to make this even more fun. 30. Sort sight words according to how many letters they have.

5 31. Sort sight words according to which letters they have. 32. Make up stories with your child that use as many sight words as possible. Write the story as you make it up. When you get to a sight word, the child can write that word (if it s not overwhelming for them, they can write ALL the words!). 33. Write the words on bigger pieces of paper (one word on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper). Lay them out on the floor. Students jump from word to word, reading and/or spelling the words out loud as they jump. 34. Make sight word pyramids to practice spelling. Draw a big triangle. Inside the top of the triangle, write the first letter of the word. Under that (but still inside the triangle), write the first and second letters of the word. Under that, write the first, second, and third letters of the word. Continue until the whole word is spelled at the bottom of the triangle. Example: If the word is about, first write a at the top of the triangle. Under that, write ab. Under that, write abo. Under that, write abou. Under that, write about. 35. Type the sight words multiple times using different fonts. Then have students sort the words (so all of the different- looking the cards go together, all of the different- looking have cards go together, etc.).
