1 Pendergast Elementary School District Newsletter Fall 2014 Superintendent s Message It is my honor and privilege to serve as your new Superintendent. We are all Bee -lievers in Pendergast! Dear Pendergast Families, Staff and Community, I can t believe it is already November. I feel so much at home here in Pendergast. It has been a very busy few months since I arrived and the district and schools are buzzing with teaching and learning. This community newsletter is but one of the ways to connect with you along with our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, community meetings and more. Communication is one of our critical goals in the district, along with teaching and learning, community relations, collaborative management, management and operations, and governing board relations. We are currently a B district as labeled by the Arizona Department of Education. With our goals in place, and your support, we will become an A district. We will promise to update you on a consistent basis and ask you to join our efforts as a key member of our team. Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn t be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn t know it, so it goes on flying anyway. We ve done that by implementing and supporting some major changes over the past several months. We started by hiring Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux as our new superintendent. In only a few short months, she s come in and had an immediate positive impact on our kids. We restructured our budget to cut administrative costs. This has allowed us to reduce class sizes so that our teachers are able to spend more 1 on 1 time with your children. Our entire mission has been re-focused. That has all come about because our governing board has been united in our mission to serve the Pendergast community. We ve worked very hard to re-focus our efforts to improve this district and we are confident that you will see the results this year. Pendergast is here to serve you and we all have an open door policy for you to express your concerns, praise or ask questions. 3 Looking for Exceptional Teachers Pendergast Elementary School District is looking for outstanding teacher candidates to educate students in this Arizona Department of Education B District located in the cities of Avondale, Glendale and Phoenix. Teachers who come to school everyday to Inspire Excellence & Achievement in our 10,000 students on twelve campuses are eligible to win a CAR! It s all about Bee -lieving! Pendergast Bee -lievers Kick-off a New School Year! Joseph Chavez, 8th grade student at Westwind Elementary commanded the stage at the Pendergast Kick-off Event held on July 29, 2014 at the Palm Valley Church. His message was simple, yet compelling, I can be what I want to be. We need you to believe in us and show us, so we can reach our highest potential. These powerful words set the stage for a new beginning for the Pendergast District. Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux, Pendergast s new Superintendent, has made it her goal this year to have each of the 10,000 students, 963 staff members, 5 Governing Board members, and countless family and community members in the Pendergast boundaries of Avondale, Glendale and Phoenix join the district in the celebration and be Bee -lievers. Throughout the Kick-off, everyone in the room felt the magic of the Superintendent stating that the event was un- bee -lievable. She graciously thanked the business sponsors and partners and challenged everyone to...care deeply and experience the success of Pendergast. For the first time in Pendergast history, all staff members were included in the Kick-off event that created a buzz in the air. From the talented students, staff members, Governing Board and Superintendent displaying their creative dance moves during the flash mob to the fantastic donated raffle prizes, and everyone s Bee -liever shirts, it was truly an exciting way to begin the new school year. This is re-energizing and what efficacy is all about, said Board Member Ruben Gutierrez, It shows the strength of the district in numbers and what every individual is all about. 4 Pendergast & Arizona Hispanic Administrators Association Sponsor Leadership Institute The Bee Extraordinary Effective Stewards Institute kicked off October 3! This comprehensive, ten weekend academy for new and aspiring principals is a rigorous professional development opportunity designed to meet the challenges of the new millennium. Positive Change Comes to Pendergast When Pendergast Superintendent Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux took the reins as the new superintendent, she carefully analyzed school and district needs, as well as, worked closely with the district Governing Board to put resources into the classrooms that would benefit students. She also ensured that the district was operating with maximum effectiveness and efficiency. Under Dr. DeBlieux s leadership, district administrators have increased their visibility on Pendergast s twelve campuses to view first-hand the needs and support in order to assist the campus leadership. Listed below are many of the significant changes that have been implemented since Dr. DeBlieux began on May 7, 2014 in the Educational Service Department headed by Mrs. Dora Barrio, Chief Academic Officer. Pendergast & Amberlea Elementary are piloting a research-based math curriculum entitled Engage New York. Villa de Paz Elementary has become a Math & Science Focus School. Training and support through the math coordinator is provided for administration and staff. The school is also working on Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) grants to enhance learning. The focus is on developing and refining applied leadership and management skills required of principals at the elementary, middle grades and high school levels. According to Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux and Dora Barrio, B.E.E.S. Institute Directors, this program is amazing opportunity for future leaders to receive the training and mentoring they need to be successful administrators. The Institute has been planned to showcase local talent and enable school districts to hire the best in the profession. Pendergast Enrichment Program is transforming into a Gifted Program to provide students identified as gifted learners with opportunities to learn new material at their level that is aligned to AZ College & Career Readiness Standards. The time for gifted classes has been extended to one hour in grades 6th - 8th. New student report cards will include I Can statements to show the Pendergast belief in all students. Many school administrators meetings and trainings are scheduled after school, so leaders can be on their campuses where they are needed. Professional development through Educational Services will be provided before and after classroom instruction to ensure teachers are in classrooms focused on student learning. Educational Services is supporting principals as they maintain the momentum of continuous growth at their campuses. Schools will use their data and goals to drive their professional development, collaborative team planning, etc. Educational Services created a parent one-page calendar of community events, activities and parent workshops. A team of retired teachers and staff from Educational Services are administrating The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessments, a set of procedures and measures for assessing the achievement of early literacy skills from kindergarten through 6th grade. All staff in the Teacher Evaluation Committee have been asked for feedback and recommendations. Leadership and staff at all schools are reviewing goals and data to complete school summary reports.

Pendergast Puts Bond Dollars to Effective Use Stewardship of funds increases accountability Since the passage of voter funded bonds by taxpayers in the Pendergast School District in 2006 and 2012, district employees, students, families and the community have been the beneficiaries. According to Brian Mee, Chief Business Officer for the Pendergast District, Pendergast has always been known to be vigilant stewards of our taxpayer s funds. We are grateful for the trust the community shows us and in turn our projects are transparent and every dime is spent with a process guaranteed to be accountable. Pendergast Superintendent, Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux, shares, Our community knows how vital the investment is in our schools and they can see the results in safe and secure environments, community resources, learning opportunities for students and teachers with technology tools and multi-purpose buildings. An investment in our schools is an investment in the future of our students and their success. 6 Dr. Matos DeBlieux Chosen for Valle del Sol s Leadership Institute Valle del Sol s Hispanic Leadership Institute is an 10-week program with a focus on cultural identity, team-building and service to community. The Hispanic Leadership Institute was established and designed to educate and assist individuals in developing and expanding their leadership skills to take an active role in the community. Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux shares her enthusiasm about being selected for this longstanding, valuable leadership program. The HLI West Valley is a golden opportunity to connect with others in our community and share the power of collaboration. I believe in the strength of community connections to create mutually beneficial relationships that will showcase our 10,000 students and 12 school campuses and the outstanding educational opportunities they offer. Valle del Sol s Hispanic Leadership Institute was established and designed to educate and assist individuals in developing and expanding their leadership skills to take an active role in the community. Governing Board President Martin Quezada Honored by Los Abogados Quezada receives the Emerging Leader Award from Arizona s Hispanic Bar Association. At a recent Los Abogados gala, Governing Board President Martin Quezada was presented with the Emerging Leader Award. Members of the Hispanic Bar Association of Arizona include private and public attorneys, judges, business people, paralegals and law students. Los Abogados is an affiliate member of the Hispanic National Bar Association. (HNBA). In addition to being honored as an emerging leader, Quezada completed his Master of Boardmanship from the Arizona School Board s Association Academy of Board Development. The ASBA s Academy of Board Development program is designed to equip board members with the knowledge and techniques necessary to develop policies and practices to support the organization s instructional leadership role. Martin has a strong belief in being an effective board member to serve the students, staff, families and communities of Pendergast. The more we learn about the workings of a school district and its schools, the better job we can do as board members. It is important as board members that we engage in our own professional development as role models, just as we expect our teachers to do. Help Your Family Prepare for the Future! 7 The Pendergast Community Cabinet Breakfast On October 30, 2014 over 70 of Pendergast s Community and partners in education joined Superintendent Dr. Matos DeBlieux and Governing Board members for the first Monthly Community Cabinet Breakfast. The purpose of the breakfast is to educate, inform and inspire community-wide opportunities that comes from working together. Highlights from the event included the student Green Team from Pendergast Elementary School who addressed the crowd about their green program that promotes energy efficiency, conservation and enhanced learning. Dr. Matos DeBlieux also shared the story of Canyon Breeze Elementary second grader Emily Ellerholz who, after battling Hypoplastic Left Heart Failure since birth, received a heart transplant on October 23. Governing Board Member Rubén Gutiérrez Joined Latino Leaders for NALEO National Summit Rubén B. Gutiérrez joined the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, the nation s preeminent Latino leadership organization, and more than 55 Latino school board members, higher education trustees, and state legislators from across the country to discuss the state of Latino education and strategies to ensure Latino students have access to positive educational experiences and high quality instruction. The 10th Annual National Summit on the State of Latino Education took place September 29-30, 2014, in Washington, D.C. Board Member Rubén B. Gutiérrez stated, With less than 2% of the nation's educational leadership roles being Latino, we must ensure that our fastest growing minority group of students are equally represented in leadership roles. We must work together to prepare aspiring Latino leaders who seek to become tomorrow's leaders in our schools, communities, and educational organizations. Pendergast is a great example of how governance, leadership, and professional learning communities are working together to ensure that our students receive equitable resources and an equal education through collaborative leadership that is centered in the students best interests.

8 Arizona School Tax Credit 2014 It s never too early to think about tax credits! Pendergast Community Center The Pendergast Community Center Grand Opening & Community Forum Slated for February 7, 2015 The Pendergast Community Center is a newly completed, state-of-the-art community resource center for children and families in the West Valley. The facility brings together health, fitness, social welfare and education organizations focused on meeting the diverse needs of families. Designed to provide support for children, the Pendergast Community Center has a pediatric dental clinic and community medical clinic through Maricopa Integrated Health Systems; a First Things First Family Resource Center to provide parent education opportunities; and a recreation center to provide school age children with quality before and after school programming, as well as, providing a fun and safe place to be during school breaks. Dignitaries from the Pendergast Elementary School District; the municipalities of Glendale, Phoenix and Avondale; First Things First; Maricopa Integrated Health Systems; and other community partners are expected to be in attendance at the Grand Opening and Community Forum. The event is designed to provide the community and partners with a chance to visit the Pendergast Community Center in an open house format. Student performances, community partner exhibits and food will also be part of the festivities. The Grand Opening for the Pendergast Community Center and Second Community Forum is scheduled for February 7, 2015 from 11:00am to 3:00pm at W. Mariposa Street Phoenix, AZ (623) The event is open to the public and there is no charge. Come join the fun, friendly and informative festivities and see how the Center can help you and your family. The Arizona Legislative House Bill 2074 enables taxpayers to designate up to $400 (for a married couple filing taxes jointly) or up to $200 (for single filers) on their State income taxes by contributing to Arizona school extracurricular activity programs. This law allows you, the taxpayer, the opportunity to denote your tax dollars to directly benefit schools and students in Pendergast. Tax Credits support the Ballroom Dance Program The tax credit program provides students meaningful activities and programs that include: before & afterschool programs, fine arts programs, band, clubs, classes, tutoring, sports and academic field trips. 9 Pendergast Elementary School Awarded Apple and ConnectED Grant Pendergast Elementary School has been selected to receive an Apple grant as part of the ConnectED program. The award will enable Pendergast Elementary to provide a comprehensive 1:1 technology solution for every student and teacher, including Apple hardware, software and services. By providing students, teachers and administrators with Apple technology, Pendergast Elementary will be able to enrich its classroom experience and expand opportunities for its students. This grant will have a tremendous impact on our students here at Pendergast, said Pendergast Elementary Principal Mike Woolsey, as well as, our entire Pendergast community. Additional information about Apple and ConnectED is available at Come and Walk with the Superintendent! It may not be as flashy as a Pilates or Spin class, but walking has all kinds of incredible health benefits. In an effort to raise awareness of the need to increase daily physical activity, the Pendergast Wellness Program, kicked off BEE-HEALTHY & Walk with the Superintendent on Friday, November 7. With the sun just beginning to rise, participants started at the Pendergast District Office and put in 30 minutes of fast paced walking. In the weeks to come we are challenging everyone; employees, parents and students to bring a friend and come Walk with the Superintendent on Fridays at 6:30am starting out from the District Office. Prizes will be awarded to participants!

12 La Escuela Pendergast Galardonada con el Subsidio Apple y ConnectED La Escuela Pendergast ha sido seleccionada para recibir un subsidio Apple como parte del programa ConnectED. El galardón le permitirá a la Escuela Pendergast proveer una solución de tecnología completa uno a uno para cada estudiante y maestro, incluyendo Apple hardware, software y servicios. 13 Centro Comunitario de Pendergast La Gran Apertura del Centro Comunitario de Pendergast y Foro Comunitario Programado para febrero 7, 2015 El Centro Comunitario de Pendergast es un nuevo recurso comunitario de vanguardia para los niños y las familias del Oeste del Valle. La instalación une salud, buen estado físico, bienestar social y organizaciones educativas enfocadas en alcanzar las necesidades diversas de las familias. Diseñado para proveer apoyo a los niños, el Centro Comunitario de Pendergast cuenta con una clínica dental pediátrica y clínica médica para la comunidad por medio del Sistema Integrado de Salud de Maricopa; un Centro de Recursos para la Familia llamado First Things First Family Resource Center para proveer oportunidades de educación a los padres; y centro de recreación para ofrecerles a los niños en edad escolar programas de calidad durante antes y después de la escuela, así como, proveer un lugar divertido y seguro para estar cuando no hay clases. Los Dignatarios del Distrito Escolar Pendergast; las municipalidades de Glendale, Phoenix y Avondale; First Things First; Maricopa Integrated Health Systems; y otros socios comunitarios se espera que asistan a la Gran Apertura y al Foro Comunitario. El evento está diseñado para proveerle a la comunidad y socios la oportunidad de visitar el Centro Comunitario de Pendergast en un formato de open house/puertas abiertas. Crédito de Impuestos para las Escuelas de Arizona 2014 Nunca es demasiado temprano para pensar sobre los créditos de impuestos! La ley legislativa de Arizona HB 2074 les permite a los contribuyentes designar hasta $400 (por matrimonio que llenan sus impuestos juntos) o hasta $200 (por persona) en sus impuestos estatales contribuyendo a programas de actividad extracurricular en una escuela de Arizona. 14 Desayuno del Gabinete de la Comunidad de Pendergast El 30 de octubre del 2014 mas de 70 miembros y socios en la educación de la comunidad de Pendergast acompañaron a la Superintendente Dra. Matos DeBlieux y a miembros de la Mesa Directiva en el primer Desayuno Mensual del Gabinete de la Comunidad El propósito del desayuno es educar, informar e inspirar oportunidades a lo largo de la comunidad que resultan al trabajar juntos. Los momentos memorables del evento incluyeron el Equipo Verde de estudiantes de la Escuela Pendergast quienes se dirigieron a la multitud sobre el programa verde el cual promueve energía eficiente, conservación y aprendizaje mejorado. Matos DeBlieux también compartió la historia de la estudiante de segundo grado de la Escuela Canyon Breeze Emily Ellerholz la cual, después de luchar contra el síndrome de corazón izquierdo hipoplástico desde su nacimiento, recibió un trasplante de corazón el 23 de octubre. Gutiérrez acompañó al Fondo Educativo de la Asociación Nacional de Funcionarios Latinos Electos y Nominados (NALEO por sus siglas en inglés), la organización preeminente de liderazgo latino de la nación, y a mas de 55 directivos latinos de escuelas, administradores de educación superior, y legisladores estatales de todo el país para hablar sobre el estado de la educación latina y estrategias para asegurar que estudiantes latinos tengan acceso a experiencias de educación positivas y enseñanza de alta calidad. La Décima Cumbre Nacional Anual sobre el Estado de la Educación Latina se llevó a cabo el 29 y 30 de septiembre del 2014, en Washington, D.C. El miembro de la Mesa Directiva Rubén B. Gutiérrez indicó, Con menos del 2% de los roles de liderazgo educativo de la nación siendo de latinos, debemos asegurar que nuestro grupo minoritario de estudiantes con mayor crecimiento sean igualmente representados en los roles de liderazgo. Matos DeBlieux Elegida para el Instituto de Liderazgo Valle del Sol El Instituto de Liderazgo Hispano Valle del Sol es un programa de 10 semanas con un enfoque en identidad cultural, fomento del espíritu de equipo, y servicio a la comunidad. El Instituto de Liderazgo Hispano fue establecido y diseñado para educar y asistir a personas en el desarrollo y expansión de sus habilidades de liderazgo para tomar un rol activo en la comunidad. La Dra. Lily Matos De- Blieux comparte su entusiasmo de ser elegida para este programa de liderazgo amplio y valorable. El HLI West Valley es una oportunidad única para conectarse con otras personas en nuestra comunidad y compartir el poder de la colaboración. En una gala reciente de Los Abogados, al Presidente de la Mesa Directiva Martin Quezada se le otorgó el Reconocimiento de Líder Emergente. Miembros del Hispanic Bar Association of Arizona incluyen abogados privados y públicos, jueces, personas de negocios, asistentes legales y estudiantes de ley. Los Abogados es un miembro afiliado de la Barra Nacional de Abogados Hispanos (HNBA por sus siglas en inglés). Aparte de ser honorado como líder emergente, Quezada completó su Maestría de Boardmanship en la Academia Arizona School Board s Association Academy of Board Development. El programa de la Academia ASBA Academy of Board Development está diseñado para equipar a los miembros de directivos con el conocimiento y técnicas necesarias para desarrollar políticas y prácticas para apoyar el rol de liderazgo de la organización de enseñanza. 17 Pendergast y la Asociación de Administradores Hispanos de Arizona Patrocinan el Instituto de Liderazgo El Instituto Bee Extraordinary Effective Stewards (Se un Administrador Extraordinario Efectivo) se lanzó el 3 de octubre! Esta academia integral de diez fines de semana para nuevos y aspirantes a directores es una oportunidad de desarrollo profesional riguroso designado para alcanzar los desafíos del nuevo milenio. El enfoque es desarrollar y refinar el liderazgo aplicado y habilidades de manejo requerido para los directores al nivel de primaria, secundaria y preparatoria. De acuerdo con la Dra. Lily Matos DeBlieux, Dora Barrio, y Directores del Instituto B.E.E.S., este programa es una oportunidad increíble para que futuros líderes reciban el entrenamiento y guía que ellos necesitan para ser administradores exitosos. El Instituto ha sido planeado para mostrar el talento local y permitirles a los distritos escolares contratar a los mejores en la profesión. Cambio Positivo Llega a Pendergast Cuando la Superintendente de Pendergast, Dra. El tiempo de las clases para dotados ha sido extendido a una hora para los grados de 6to - 8vo. Las nuevas boletas para estudiantes incluirán las declaraciones Yo Puedo para mostrar la creencia de Pendergast en todos los estudiantes. Muchas de las juntas y entrenamientos de administradores escolares son programados después de la escuela, para que los líderes puedan estar en sus escuelas donde son necesitados. El Departamento de Servicios Educacionales está apoyando a los directores mientras ellos mantienen el impulso de crecimiento continuo en sus escuelas. Las escuelas usarán su información y metas para manejar su desarrollo profesional, planeamiento de equipo colaborativo, etc. El Departamento de Servicios Educacionales creó un calendario de una hoja para padres con eventos de la comunidad, actividades y talleres para padres. Un equipo de maestros retirados y personal del Departamento de Servicios Educacionales están administrando las evaluaciones de Indicadores Dinámicos de Habilidades Básicas de Alfabetización Temprana (DIBELS por sus siglas en inglés), un conjunto de procedimiento y medidas para evaluar el logro de habilidades de alfabetización temprana desde kindergarten a 6to grado. A todo el personal en el Comité de Evaluación de Maestros se les ha pedido opiniones y recomendaciones. Los líderes y personal en todas las escuelas están repasando las metas e información para completar los reportes de resumen de la escuela.
