7 Ideas for keeping your children active this summer: By Jennifer Meyers, Sonoma County Office of Education Summer vacation is quickly approaching. This time of year can produce stress in both parents and students, but you can avoid summer meltdowns with a little preparation. The first step is to create a plan to help your children s bodies and minds stay active in the months ahead. CREATE A ROUTINE: Children thrive with structure and routine because it helps them predict what s going to happen next. During the school year, they know that they can count on certain events taking place before, during, and after the school day. As much as they love their time off, they often show signs of stress and anxiety, or boredom when they don t know what lies ahead. By developing a somewhat predictable schedule, you can lower the anxiety in your children s lives, as well as your own. If you continue some of your family s familiar school year routines during the summer, it will make the transition easier. Your summer schedule can be more flexible, but it helps if the structure is still there. Consider making a schedule that maps out appropriate times to wake up, eat meals and snacks, bathe, and go to bed. With those pieces in place, you can fill the rest of time with fun activities, time with friends, and so on. Be sure to include time for reading and helping around the house. Create the schedule with your children and post it somewhere visible. This will remind them what the plan is and give them something to reference. By establishing a clear schedule, you ll also encourage them to build time management and organizational skills. LIMIT TV AND VIDEO GAMES: Everyone needs some down time, including your children. After a busy day of activity, it s OK for them to watch TV or play a video game for a short, limited period of time. However, it can be detrimental for children and teens to spend a significant portion of the day in front of a television or computer screen. Children and teens who spend too much time watching TV or playing video games are missing out on other activities that are important to their physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development. The time they spend with these types of electronics is time taken away from activities with friends, reading, exercising, and exploring the world around them. An active, healthy lifestyle begins in childhood. Promoting activity now will help your children develop healthy habits throughout their entire lives.

9 Preventing the Summer Slide What is the Summer Slide? Students who don t read much over the summer show a decline in reading performance from the end of one grade to the start of the next, which is called the Summer Slide. Research done at Harvard University by James Kim shows that even reading 4 or 5 books over the summer helps to prevent the summer slump. Having books at home determines how much students read over the summer. Unfortunately, the very students who are most at-risk are the ones who often don t have enough books. What can we do as parents to prevent the summer slide? 1. Provide books to read. 2. Set the expectation. 3. Show interest in the books they read. 4. Have fun and create good memories!- Below is a list of free summer activities for Santa Ana residents. 4. Diviértanse y crean buenas memorias!
