4 Preschool What s coming in the next week. Next week, we will begin a unit on Thanksgiving and turkeys! Students will learn about the first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims and Native Americans. Students will listen to the stories Thankful, What is Thanksgiving?, and Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks. Students will learn about the culture of the Native Americans and create their own pattern on a headband. Students will also learn how the Pilgrim s lives were very different from ours. Students will be introduced to the letter Rr, the number 10 and the color white. We will also start exploring 3D shapes beginning with cones. In Religion, students will start a unit on God Made Holy Things and begin to explore God Made Churches. Kindergarten Next week in Reading, students will meet a new Superkids friend named Icky. Icky will teach students about short vowel i, as in ichy. Students will read words that have short i in them, like big, sit and pin. Students will continue to work on their blending skills. Students will read the sight words no, go and play. In small groups students will read one of the following books: I Was With or A Nap and a Map. In Math, students will continue to work on completing addition sentences. We are working on finding the missing addend. We will also begin working on writing addition sentences to find number pairs to equal the sum of 5. Please continue to work with your student on the formation of numbers. In Religion, we will spend the week talking about Vocations. Students will learn that a vocation is a call from God. Grade 1 Next week students will read a poem called Super Scrub-o-matic and connect rhyming words to pictures. We will focus on sequencing each day with pictures, sentences, and story books/short stories. We will show how to sequence with drawings, sorting, and numbering events in order. Our Spelling Test over Unit 3 s words will be next week also. Students are decoding and writing words that end with -ing, -ong, and -le. Mrs. Mayall s skills group will be continuing with their Days With Frog and Toad unit. We are reading each chapter together, telling and writing about new vocabulary in each chapter, and showing what we learn and think with drawings, sentences, and graphic organizers. In Math, we will complete Chapter 3 and take our Chapter 3 math test. Students will add 3 numbers and use 10 to add. Each student is also working hard on their math facts. Make sure your child is practicing them each evening at home. Some students have certain math facts highlighted on their math facts sheet. Page 4 of 6
5 Grade 2 Grade 3 Next week students will work with words that have the pattern oo it is both long (ex. room) and short (ex. book). Students will learn that there are five different ways to spell the long oo. Students will understand and use quotation marks and identify and use compound words. Miss Bruemmer s skills group will be reading a new non-fiction book Migrating Geese. Students will learn why geese migrate from cold climates to warmer ones in the Fall. Students will learn facts about geese and how they help each other on the long journey of migration. In Math, students will continue learning different strategies to help with addition and subtraction. Please continue to practice Minute Math facts every night. The current facts that each student are on are found in the BEAR Binder. In Religion, students will continue preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Again this will take place at 7pm on Thursday, November 19 th in church. Religion - Students will continue with vocation activities. English - Reading Students will focus on preparation for the Standardized Reading Test. They will be exposed to test format and strategies for multiple choice questions. Homework this week will be multiple practice tests. It is extremely important that they complete all homework. We will be going over the homework each day. Vocabulary - Spelling - Science / S. Studies - Students will read and discuss various Thanksgiving stories. Math - Students will continue their exploration into Multiplication by using arrays. They will be introduced to the Commutative Property of Multiplication, Identity Property of Multiplication and Zero Property of Multiplication. There will be a Chapter 3 test by weeks end. Grade 4 Grade 5 Religion Students will be learning about the different Vocations this week. English - Students will practice using commas in quotations. Reading - Students will continue our Mr. Popper s Penguins novel study. Science - Students will continue to learn about the water cycle. Math (Musselman) - Students will continue to learn about dividing and take a mid-chapter test. Math (Sanvido) - Students will continue to build on multiplication as a comparison with an emphasis on arrays and fact families. Social Studies - Students will take the Ohio Geography Test. Religion Students will be participating in different vocations activities. English - Students will take the Nouns test. Reading - Students will continue our Pedro s Journal novel study. They will also continue to study types of conflict. Science - Students will continue to learn about outer space with an emphasis on the earth, the sun, and the moon. Math (Ms. Musselman) - Students will continue to learn about decimals and take an end of the chapter test. Math (Mrs. Sanvido) - Students will work on coordinate planes and more onto classifying shapes geometrically. Social Studies Students will learn about the building of the different colonies in America. Page 5 of 6
6 Grade 6 Grade 7 Religion Students will learn about Jacob in the Bible. English Students will receive a new vocab list and spelling list to learn Reading Students will be reading a series of short stories and doing activities on them. Science Students will be finishing Unit 2 on Earth s Resources and preparing for a unit test. Math (Martin) Students will begin learning how to compare and order numbers with decimals. Math (Sanvido) - Students will focus on multiplying and dividing numbers with decimals. Social Studies Students will finish our unit on Ancient Egyptians and Israelites, and begin our studies of ancient civilizations in India. Religion Students will learn about vocations and how to answer God s call in their own lives. English - Students will continue working with compound sentences. Reading - Students will start reading a biography titled Phineas Gage: The Gruesome but True Story of Brain Science. Science Students will learning about the 3 ways energy can be transferred: radiation, conduction, and convection Math (Martin) Students will complete a project involving fractions to wrap up Chapter 3. Math (Poux) Students will learn how to convert between decimals and fractions or mixed numbers. Social Studies Students will begin to study major national issues during the presidencies of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Grade 8 Religion Students will learn about vocations and how to answer God s call in their own lives. English Students will work with verbs. Reading Students will begin reading Of Mice and Men. Science Students will discussing the historical development of the theory of plate tectonics. Math (Martin) Students will begin learning about exponents and roots. Math (Poux) Students will work with squares and square roots. Social Studies Students will analyze how the problems of the Industrial Revolution led to the Progressive Era in American history.
