1 e to ie stem changing verbs You have already seen two -go verbs that change e to ie: tener -- to have venir -- to come tengo tenemos vengo venimos tienes tenéis vienes venís tiene tienen viene vienen Notice that the irregular conjugations are in all but the nosotros and vosotros forms, with the yo form as a -go form. The nosotros and vosotros forms are conjugated exactly like regular verbs. The following list of verbs are NOT -go verbs, but they ARE e to ie stem changers. They are all conjugated like these two verbs: pensar -- to think entender -- to understand pienso pensamos entiendo entendemos piensas pensáis entiendes entendéis piensa piensan entiende entienden Notice that the e to ie forms follow the shape of a boot -- all forms except the nosotros and vosotros forms have an e that changes to an ie. The rest of the conjugation is regular (the endings). Each of these verbs are conjugated the same: acertar to guess, to get right advertir to advise, to warn apretar to be tight, to squeeze ascender to go up, to promote atravesar to cross cerrar to comenzar to begin confesar to confess consentir to consent convertir to convert defender to defend descender to go down, descend empezar to begin encender to light, to kindle encerrar to lock in, to contain entender to understand fregar to scrub, to wash dishes gobernar to govern hervir to boil mentir to lie, to tell a lie negar to deny pensar (en) to think (about) perder to lose preferir to prefer querer to want, to wish, to love quebrar to break recomendar to recommend referir to refer sentir to feel sorry, to regret sugerir to suggest temblar to tremble tropezar (con) to stumble, bump into *** In the verbs with more than one e, the LAST e changes to ie!!

5 More Stem changing Verbs The following verbs all have an o that changes to ue in all but the nosotros and vosotros forms. The verbs below have an e that changes to an i in all but the nosotros and vosotros forms. **Notice that all these verbs end in -ir, and that some of them are from your -go verbs list!
